So are people throwing the word "Camping" and "Tunneling" around without understanding what it means
I'm genuinely curious. I play this game like 60% killer and 40% survivor with it doing a flip recently with the addition of boons and just started playing Survivor heavily. But I would say most of my games had none of this stuff. It's also the reason why I started making topics about how DS is overrated garbage in high MMR. Of course there's some "Camping" or "Tunneling" in some games but honestly it could be attributed to the game being on EGC that this is fair play at this point. There's also the fact that your random teammates is doing a godawful saves and just encouraged the killer to patrol the surroundings instead which I think is also fair play.
I also met a friend when I was looking for randoms to play the game with since it's boring doing Solo queue for years and he throws around this terms around willy nilly and I'll be scratching my head midgame when the Killer isn't even doing those stuff, Just stayed near where he got hooked and started doing generators. It also didn't help that he didn't a good job pathing himself properly and just showed blatant disrespect to the killer because he has DS on and BT. It's just mind boggling.
I also watched some random streamers on Twitch and seems like this is just the mindset going around. It's like you have to run a non existent Make your choice otherwise you're either of those terms.
By the way I do think Camping and Tunneling do genuinely exist in the game but I'm starting to have doubt whether it applies or not in some cases.

In my opinion
Camping (either face or proxy)- is when a Killer doesn't leave a theoretical area to which a Survivor is hooked
Tunneling (either hardcore or happenstance)- is when a Killer doesn't leave a Survivor to heal or get on a Gen after being unhooked
See I am one of those Killer that doesn't Camp nor Tunnel but get (Bad Word) cause the Survivors think that I am... Yes I won't leave a hook if I see another Survivor or I see scratch marks (either around the hooked Survivor or coming close to the hooked Survivor)... and as for Tunneling I do only for the hook nothing else so if I see a Survivor getting unhooked then I'll go see what I see (either the Survivor that just came off the hook or them healing -either at the hook or somewhere close by- so it's not entirely my fault for doing what I do... but if I am in a chase with another Survivor and the save happens then I let it go

As a rule of thump, if the killer is on the map, he´s camping.

I've been playing survivor a lot lately (like 10-15 games I day) because I broke my headset recently and people overstimate a lot how much tunneling and camping happens. Sure there's a lot of proxy camping, but I can't judge when maps are the size of Africa and it takes half a gen of time just for a no mobility to cross the map. Just either use DS or BT, depending which your playstyle is, and it's easily manageable.

Camping and tunneling are essentially the salty survivors version of swf and High mmr that you see killers complaining about.
Are there swfs that clearly just wanna make sure you have a bad time? Can Mmr be stupid? Absolutely. Is it as common as people say? Absolutely not.
Same with camping and tunneling. Plenty of killers camp because they genuinely believe they saw a survivor or saw indicators showing a survivor is close. Doesn't mean there are but the killer didn't know that.
Tunneling is worse and can frequently be due to bad luck or bad plays. If people don't want to be tunneled, run. Choose a point in the distance and run till you get there. Actively trying to impede killer directly off hook just says they are good to go and have no right to complain about tunneling. Getting unhooked doesn't mean you get 60 seconds to save everyone, heal everyone, blind the killer should they leave the basement, and maybe bang out the last of a gen.
Yet this is what I find survivors start thinking when they notice I prioritize the rescuer. They don't take it as "Hey I know I got a chance to flee after I'm unhooked I should use it!" They seem to see it as some kind of entitlement. It's the only reason I can figure out. Otherwise I feel like they wouldn't get so mad when it backfires and they get knocked out rapidly 2 minutes later.

ofc they are they always have

As common as "genrushing", depending on how low or high your MMR is.

Just like "toxic", those two words lost its true meaning in now 2022.
Tunneling and camping certainly exist, but people need to realize that not everything is tunneling/camping and it's impossible to have none at all.
We need to learn to differentiate between actual toxic behavior without consorting to petty hissyfits that muddle the devs' balancing decisions.

I’ve definitely seen real camping and tunneling, but I agree that many (not all) of the complaints about camping and tunneling are just the killer trying to take advantage of situations presented to them and playing efficiently. When I play killer, when I leave the hook I always look back while I’m walking away. If I see someone rushing in the the save, in almost every case I am going to go back and hit someone. This isn’t “camping”, it’s playing smart, but it will be complained about as “camping”. If I go after the survivor who was just unhooked survivor, it will only be because they were closer to me or farther away from a safe loop and easier to hit. And I always have to worry about DS, which based on my experience gets used at least 50% of the time

I can relate to this so much. I had a Feng literally bee-line for a hook save, a David hooked on first hook, I heard the Feng breath and run so I looked around and the. I saw scratch marks. I hit and downed her, she was death hook and then complained about me hard-core camping.
I told her that I heard her breath and run and asked why they didn't wait for me to leave. She said because I was leaving so I answered, "your mistake for running when the killer is still around and why would I leave knowing a survivor is around".

Yea Survivors can't seem to catch their own mistakes
And Killer can't seem to catch theirs
It's a vicious cycle to say the least

It is subjective nowadays. If there ever was a consensus, it is gone now. Usually it is just survivor main copium and most killers who camp and tunnel do not care that it hurts their feelings to begin with, so the whole point is kind of moot.

Hmm.
- DS is an odd perk. It's real power comes into play when you don't equip it, as killers will often still behave as if you had it.
- 'Tunneling' is basically code for 'you played the game tactically'. Eliminating 1 survivor ASAP is absolutely crucial. Tunneling directly off hook is a little dirty, but otherwise - if I see two people, I'm going for the one with more hooks.
- 'Camping' is only a problem when someone is straight up facecamping.
- I've been accused of camping/tunneling for: Attacking people while healing. Waiting for someone to leave a locker. Hitting someone who's trying to unhook the second I hook. Defending totems, Pig boxes and fountains. Grabbing people off gens. Defending exit gates. I no longer care.
- I won't facecamp outside of EOGC or someone teabagging me, but I'll absolutely try to get rid of one person as soon as I can.
- It is odd how killers are expected to behave by some sort of honor code, but survivors aren't.

I'll generally proxy camp when I hook someone, then can't find anyone to chase. People get really salty if you don't give them free unhooks, and it's a mentality that people need to shake off.
I won't tunnel someone off hook unless it's a really difficult game or they've annoyed me, but I'll certainly try to eliminate someone early if the chance arises. It's your and your team's responsibility to protect you if you are vulnerable, not mine. My job is to kill you.
