SBMM is a problem and stop pretending like it's not

To preface, I'm a gold 2 survivor and my buddy is a red 1 survivor, so it's fair to say that we play a lot of this game and have a lot of experience with it. Over the course of about 2 weeks and maybe a few dozen games, I don't think that we faced more than maybe 5 killers who were above ash rank. Not people who just haven't played in a long time, actual brand new ash 4's who bought the game that day. They got maybe one or two hooks and barely found anyone the rest of the time. Why is this happening? It's very clear that this is not a casual game by any means, so games with ranks that are this randomized and out of balance should not be happening. If this game is going to be skill based, it has to make sense. And this seems to only be happening to killers, because I'm a bronze killer and I consistently get put in games against red and gold survivors where I will be lucky to get a few hooks, let alone a kill. I can't remember the last time that I got a killer that was even remotely near my rank, let along comparable to my skill as a survivor. I know that this game can't be perfectly balance, no game can, but this isn't even close. This system is making the game less fun because there is no challenge to the survivors and no chance for the killers. I genuinely believe that this system is the reason why camping killers are becoming such a problem because that is the only way that low rank killers have been able to win at all. I'm not going to pretend like I know how to fix it but I do know for a fact that it is a significant problem that is a detriment to the longevity of this game.

Can someone tell me exactly what SBMM means and what it does ?

    SBMM is not the problem.

The problem is that it is not working correctly or that it can't create reasonable matches based on it for some reason (bug, bad implementation, not enough people to choose from, etc.)

    Skill based match making.

Basically you have a hidden number that increases/decreases with escapes/deaths (for survivor) and you should be matched with players with similiar numbers.

    Known problem.

The system may in fact work good - but if no one is available or somebody dodges a match or a group has been waiting too long, the system simply favours speed and puts any match together and ignores the rest.

And that seem to happen quite often.

Survivor and Killer grades don't equate to skill anymore, why does everyone still act like they do? It doesn't matter if you're a bronze killer and get put against gold and iri survivors, it just means they've played more survivor than you have played killer this month.

I also heard that apparently the game will try to match players based on their MMR, but as soon as a survivor/killer leaves, it does not check the MMR of whoever takes their spot, so that's why you might end up having survivors who are significantly better if you notice one leaving and a new one joining, and could also be because the killer that was initially matched with those survivors had left, and you took their spot. The same can go in reverse, you could end up paired with survivors who are significantly worse than you.

It isn't an issue with SBMM, it's just that it isn't working as intended

The problem with mmr is that it's terribly implemented, which is visible.

Now, devs should make statistics in a form of graf that shows number of players in certain elos. If mmr is at least close to being well implemented then it should have some characteristics of normal distribution, which i really doubt and expect that it has 2 higher peaks for lower and higher lvl'ed players, which makes you either hard stuck in such group or constantly jump between 2 of them.

I quess it's the case because of how my killer matches looks like, as an slightly above average killer, i rarely get people on my lvl, most of the time i get really hard games or really easy games... similliar thing seems to be happening on survivor, but i play survivor less, so it might be a random fluctuation.

Yup. Then take away the semantic arguments about the definition of skill and turns out this thing is not too shabby.

The MMR can determine outcomes of games when pairing players. That means the code can determine which players to match together.

    It does work.

Meh, it was at first but now that it’s been out for awhile I don’t really care. Killer or survivor side I’m playing to have fun, not to raise an invisible number I don’t care about. When I get a tough match, my next one is usually easier/better.

Why is this game not looking into how many hours (in total and in the last month or so) each player has in this game then combine it with your rank?

    It's not, problem is SWF.

Because it does, you CAN lose pips when you lose and if you keep winning the enemy will be stronger.
