It's asinine the DC penalty still sucks after all of this time

TL;DR - Read the 4 listed suggestions for DC penalty improvements.

The DC penalty has gone through multiple iterations, and has been active for--what?--a year now? How has this system not improved yet. I've had three back-to-back games just today where a teammate has DC'd for seemingly no reason, and the game was left in a 3v1 with 5 gens up and a sweaty killer who thinks 'getting a 4k' at this point matters. It's off-putting, to say the lease since it's not difficult to look at the flaws and issues with the current system and say "you know, this system would be better if it was literally anything else."

If the developers are too busy making new skins and securing new licenses to actually try and make the game more fun and balanced for everyone, can we at the very lease look at elements of the game that are just downright obnoxious?

Suggestions and potential solutions:

  • 1) DBD mobile has AI that will load into the game if someone DC's. Why can't the main game have that? I'd rather have a bot than literally no one to fill the gap.
  • 2) If the DC happens before a certain amount of time has passed (e.g. if it's been under 3 minutes and someone has DC'd) just end the match or send those 4 remaining people back to the lobby to pick up a new teammate to start a new round.
  • 3) Give everyone one free DC a day. We still have tons of hackers in this game and it would be nice to not be further punished for getting the hell out of an unfair game like that
  • 4) If one person DCs, grant everyone a DC for that game without punishment. Why should the killer or remaining survivors be stuck with what is left, and why should any of them be 5 minute banned for it?

I am sure there are plenty of other ideas people have, but the game has too much wrong with it to not have a better system in place. Despite my annoyances, I believe it's something the developers can improve on if they just set some time into it.

I think 3 is a bit outrageous. Assuming 4 and 2, you are additionally creating 5 more DCd games a day.

    Sometimes I don't even play 5 games a day.

    These suggestions are very reasonable.

Thus people will find any reason to deny them because they're either lazy or extremely spiteful. Also they make too much sense.

I especially like the ability to DC if someone DC's. However the issue is tactical DC's to deny scourge hook or pop plays. A very nasty SWF can just take turns eating the DC penalty, and it'd likely be over before the others are done with the game. Plus a free DC (which I agree with given the state of the game.). Obviously these ideas would need polishing but this is actually very reasonable.

Yes, remove the DC penalty so I can disconnect on RPD please.

    • 1) I'd love to see bots that replace DCs on the PC version. Unfortunately the PC devs have said that, at least for now, they don't plan to do it on PC because of the amount of work it would require. (Keep in mind Mobile was apparently built from the ground up by its own team, so they probably had planned to have bots from the get go. The PC version didn't and it still has problems with Nemesis zombie pathing let alone implementing full fledged bot survivors that can properly handle all the killers and maps in the game.)
    • 2) This might not be a great idea. Yeah, the 3 remaining survivors are probably going to lose, but not everybody wants to just concede a match when someone ragequits, there's a lot of people who want to continue playing and see how well they can do anyway. Sometimes the 3 people even still manage an escape, who knows?
    • 3) Definitely not. People who disconnect literally once every play session are exactly the type of people who should be hit with stacking penalties to discourage them from doing that.
    • 4) This idea might work maybe? One possible issue would be if swfs abused it by taking turns on who would DC to spread the penalty out.

Absolutely not to the free disconnect. Just take the DC penalty. Games with hackers are not anywhere near that common if you aren't exceedingly high MMR/a streamer being specifically targeted via stuff like automated streamsniping tools.

The fourth idea would be abused to hell by people queued together. Every single person in the party should get the DC penalty,

And the majority of them just end games one way or another. It's very very rare they intentionally keep people hostage/prevent the game from ending to try and force DCs.

I agree with bots at low level, but not at high levels.

The DC'ers are DC'ing anyway. It's a bad system and the current one is not preventing DC's from occurring, and punishes anyone who is left in the game. Also, if you're not even really playing the game it doesn't really sound like any of this affects you either way.

So do you have any other suggestions, then? The stuff I posted obviously isn't intended to be perfect systems, which is why everything needs polish. But I can assure you the current system is not stopping DC's from happening anyway, so why continue to punish people who are left in the 3v1? I'm all for more ideas, otherwise it reads like you're disagreeing just to disagree.

If a person DC's then the remaining generator count to be completed should also be reduced accordingly. That's the only way I can see "balance" in a DC situation.

You're at 5 gens at the start of the game and some ######### DC's because he doesn't like the killer, or the map, or has pizza being delivered. Now the rest of the game is pretty much ruined, because the chances of 3 survivors finishing 5 generators against the killer are pretty much nil. This means the other 3 players pretty much just give up, leading to a ######### game on both sides. In this scenario, the generator count should drop from 5 to 3, so that the remaining 3 players actually stand a fighting chance, and the game progresses as "normal".

I'm fine with the DC penalty, though DBD should really come up with a way of figuring out why a DC occurred. People should not be punished for legitimate game crashes. If the player leaves the game, either via the "leave match" button, or closing the game via ALT + F4 or Task Manager however should still stick you with a penalty.

    This is true.

However, you really shouldn't be forced to play with hackers in the first place. Of course, that would involve BHVR being able to ID matches with hackers, which sounds easy, but is apparently impossible.

The remaining survivors should still get punished for their own DC if they were queued with the survivor that DC'd.

As an avid DbD mobile player, I would rather have a disconnect or match cancellation than bots. The survivor AI is no good, they just hide from the killer (even if it means you lose hook states/die on hook) and don't do gens. They fail skill checks constantly, won’t repair gens unless you let them heal you first, and if they do survive to end game, open the exit gate and immediately leave. They seriously just meander around 90% of the time. It's not fun to watch at all.

Meanwhile, the killer AI will never not be able to find you and will not relent in chase from you. The only redeeming quality is that they can be infinitely 360'd, which is irritating to put up with though.

Disconnects are simply part of DbD, don't see why there should be a penalty at all. If someone doesn't want to play in a match, they won't. Even if they can't DC, they'll AFK, or even worse, troll their team. People who don't want to be in a match anymore will just DC and play another game. So the penalty actually encourages people to not play DbD and go play other games, ironically enough.

You're never going to get your free "let me DC because I got downed early" card so it's best to stop suggesting it. I don't get why every single thread about the DC penalty has some suggestion, no matter how minor, that revolves around removing the penalty. If hackers are so common that you need daily free DC's then go play a different game.

Happened to me on a few occasions. Either some parcel delivery, or food that comes right as I'm in the middle of the match. If I'm a survivor, I just jump in the nearest locker and hope to get it over with before I get AFK crows, but I can't do that playing killer.

And they get put in timeout where they have wait long times before they can d/c again and ruin someone's game.

The system isn't there to prevent DCs from happening, it's to punish people who frequently d/c.

1: I'd love bots but I'm pretty sure they've said it's not going to happen. We're not going to get them for practice or customs either. I would take this in a heartbeat over anything else though.

2: While not a bad idea on paper, I feel people would abuse that it the killer got a decent start. 2 minutes and the killer has 2 hooks and a slug, DC and now they have nothing. That said if the time was short, like less then a minute or 30 seconds in then maybe I could get behind it but I still don't like the idea very much.

3: The two 5 minute bans are your free DC's and there is no reason to have 3 free ones IMO. If your dc timer is up in the 30 minutes or longer category then I don't think you should be allowed a free DC.

4: I could get behind this one but only if it's very early in the match. If we're 7 hooks deep and the person dc'd before you could hook them I don't think everyone else should just be able to DC.

Personally, I feel like the DC penalty is just fine. There will of course be outliers where people get dicked because of it but for the most part I think it does its job good enough.

One of the suggestions I've seen before is having a DC weight on matchmaking. People who DC a lot get priority put who with other people who DC. A sort of matches played vs matches DC'd and have the percentages over a certain threshold put together.

That's just one idea at least. You could do a DC weight in a lot of different ways.

    1, yes

2, maybe, probably, but I'm not sure it's what a player who has waited for a long time in a queue really wants.

3, no, it doesn't really solve anything

4, certainly not, way too much potential for abuse. It would also encourage people to give up. At the very minimum I would keep the penalty for groups of friends but even like that I don't think it's a good move.

  • foxsansbox
    foxsansbox Member Posts: 2,209

The current penalty is absolutely discouraging people from DC'ing, as it physically prevents you from queuing. The extent is debatable, but item 3 is a step backwards, as it removes that discouragement.

    1) A bot as a replacement for a DC'd player would be great. As long as that person still got their penalty. This would eliminate the need for the others.

    2) Maybe, as long as it takes everyone to the lobby to get a new player. If anyone leaves the lobby, they get a DC penalty. Otherwise I am not willing to wait in a long queue again to get another match. I'd rather play shorthanded for the match.

    3) No. Once per day, eat the penalty. If you aren't abusing DC's it won't be that bad.

    4) No. Same as 2. People DC far too often and I don't want to have to keep going back into the queue. Embrace the extra challenge. And the killer won't be bothered by it at all.

The disconnect penalty needs increased. I’d say about a third of my games have a dc.

A little while ago the DC penalty was removed. The DCing was horrible. If there isn't any kind of penalty to dissuade people it will get out of hand. Five minutes isn't bad. If you are DCing more than that it is on you. It sucks for everybody when that happens but it is what it is.
