What makes a challenging trapper?
I'm putting the chains to rest on Ceno for a little bit so I can learn a new killer. It'll be the trapper. Figured I'd come to the community and get some tips n' tricks from our lovely trapper members on what works for his gameplay and what to avoid in the trial.

Avoid stepping on your own traps.

Prepare for the heart ache for when you constantly hear your traps getting disarmed, yet never finding the Claudette that's disarming them.

My trapper has good shoes on and doesn't want them scratched up by bear traps. What are good general areas to get unsuspecting survivor caught in them instead?

Like Hag, try to not reveal you’re Trapper at the start of the match and try to get a web going early. Also, take advantage of tall grass and don’t just put traps at windows and pallets just to put them there if survivors can easily see them.

you know those areas where survivors drop and you're like, damn, I lost them. Put them at the bottom of those holes.
Don't place your traps on a pallet, place them after or before a pallet. a survivor can just drop a pallet and go over a trap, if you allow them. They cannot drop and vault over a trap that has been placed in the latter way.

Just run both pinks.

Go to the menu and pick hag...
Seriously though don't put traps in super obvious places. Right beneath windows and under pallets will always be the first place survivors look to disarm. Also a niche one if you bodyblock someone into a corner somehow and have a trap on you place it down so you get a down instead of an injure.

Remember that survivors can dead hard over ur traps
I always forget this when I play him

practice trapping locations not expected almost every trapper traps windows and then some goes around disarming every window also reccommend not breaking pallets so players will vault a pallet into a trap they didnt see.

All good recommendations, keep them coming. I'm used to playing killers that don't require too much setup early game to start pressuring survivors so it's a bit different than what I'm used to when I pickup killer, but that's kinda the point. Is it normal for him to come into the power role more towards mid-game when playing or where does his ability to snowball start to come into play? What perks does he need to help out his early game? So far I got Scourage Hook PR, BBQ, Pop, and Corrupt on him.

I view trap placement the same as trade secrets. 😜
If you are on PC, turn your quality setting to low. Lots of grass areas disappears on low settings. That way you know your traps are hidden.
For trap placement tips, think of areas you would normally run to as survivor. By this, areas where you would move through when not being chased. Other areas would be around loops and choke points. Not so much at the pallet as survivors will check and disarm those areas.

Try to setup at a strong loop start of the game and set more traps in the other possible hotspots from proximity of that loop, once you get your 1st down take them into the setup area. Try to keep a 3 gen setup there too.
Set a trap at your hex as an alarm.
Carry at least one trap with your on chases so you can disable a dropped pallet of feint people out of a loop.

Update: Played a couple of games a trapper so far and boy oh boy it's tough out here. Though using some of these recommendations I did get a 4k one game and 4 escape the next. Still have a long road ahead of me in mastering his kit. Feel like a masochist after a couple of games of the trapper. Definitely, a lot to manage in the limited time you have in the trial, so hats off to anyone that can consistently do well with him. I really like the synergy of his two pink add-ons.

A few areas that are really good are an entrance and the window at killer shack. If someone runs in the untrapped entrance, then when you're entering set a trap at the door and, unless they can and do use their Dead Hard they can't get out.
There are some other loops and rooms that you can trap survivors in with no exits. The gen room in the Game with the bathtub, for example, or the garage on AutoHaven Wreckers (one side is narrow enough that survivors can't wriggle past the trap so if you go around the other side they pallet stun you, you break the pallet and they still can't get out since you trapped their only direction). If a survivor is there don't hit them immediately. Trap the entrance and then hit them. They lose collision with you but the survivor will get caught by the trap trying to escape.
Trap strong loops near the 3 gen. If I have Iri Stone I don't care if it's visible or not because seeing its trapped stops survivors from using the loop.
Also, traps can be a source of map intelligence. Traps don't disarm themselves so you know a survivor is in the vicinity.
A nasty trick with Iri Stone as well is for generators where only one survivor can work on them is setting a trap there, the survivor disarms it, and if Iri Stone rearms it while they're working on the gen it traps them immediately.
For early game, if at all possible, utilize all of your traps and keep one on hand. The first three gens or so will pop like popcorn but you're a low mobility, area defense killer. Set up your trap network.
Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance works really well with Trapper since you're too low mobility to have real map pressure and you don't have that much time for gen defense.
I also find Tension Spring catches people off guard since people assume that, once a trap is disarmed, it stays disarmed unless the Trapper goes there. Auto rearming traps are amazing since they save you so much time.
Bloody Coil is really good for deterring disarms but Honing Stone is incredibly useful.
When you can, watch Otz's Trapper videos and you'll learn a lot.
Sorry for the length but Trapper is a pretty hard killer to play and there's a surprising amount of skill cap with him. He's definitely not a strong killer but he's definitely a fun killer in my opinion.

Don't just trap every pallet/window. Sometimes try trapping where the survivor may path towards at the loop instead; if a survivor sees a trap at a pallet they just leave and go to the next loop, but if the pallet looks free of traps they'll often try to loop there, and can run into your trap around the corner.

I appreciate such a detailed post. It provided a really good insight into different areas of his gameplay and that's what I'm looking for. He definitely is a tricky killer to play. All the setup and future planning can be arduous and confusing when it comes to trapper's style of play. Tension Spring looks interesting, I've got that one on for my next game with his other UR that auto sets traps. He is fun, and a break from my usual anti-loop character choices. It's very satisfying to see your hard work pay off when you run survivors into your web or they stumble into your little gifts. I can see why Trapper mains enjoy him even if he may not be a 5 gen bully killer.

took longer than I expected for someone to post these... XD

Trapper Sack and Iridiscent stone add ons are fun to play. Pair it with Corrupt Intervention and secure a strong 3 gen by trapping ways in and out of the loops. I've seen people work on gens and then a disabled trap resets and traps them unexpectedly.
Don't reset the traps unless absolutely necessary as they will auto reset every 30s. Just make sure you pick the locations well as you can't pick them up.
You can run other M1 perks (Sloppy Butcher, Enduring, BBQ, Ruin/Undying, etc.). Devour Hope/NOED is really fun too lol if you get 3 stacks and they get trapped you can hide the exposed status by grabbing instead of M1 hits

He is a lot of fun. One thing I forgot above that helps is to play some survivor if you don't already. By learning where survivors like to go, you get better at placing your traps. It's also extremely satisfying to watch a tbagger run away and think 'Yeah, that's exactly where I would have gone to get away if I were playing survivor. That's why I trapped it right after loading in'
Another perk I like is Hex: Blood Favour since a survivor getting trapped triggers it. That way, it's easier to catch would be rescuers and healers. I do run BBQ and Chili for the BP but it's the first perk I would replace on my load out if I weren't grinding since the info provided is of limited use on any low mobility killer.
What I see a lot of new Trappers do that's a mistake is not try to utilize all of the traps and defend too wide of a territory. On Trapper, and any low mobility killer for that matter, I find it very helpful to decide which gens I'm willing to lose and then defend a winnable layout.

Basement and the add-on that prevents you from stepping on traps.
Said add-on also shines in certain structures.
It's very powerful and allows for some very greasy plays...dunno if it's caught on, yet.

As far as perks go. Any form of gen slow down is almost mandatory being a killer that requires time to setup. I prefer corrupt intervention but whatever works.
Sadly your an m1 killer. Perks like bamboozle, stbfl, enduring, spirit fury ect are nice.
As for tracking my personal favorite is whispers. Once you know how it works you can use it to pin down where they are. Best part is they can't hide from it and it also tells you where they are not. This lets you know its probably safe to plant a trap they wont see. Or it tells you to not waste your time, no one is there.
As for general advice. You dont want to get into a chase too early. You want to plant traps in various places. Directly at pallets/windows are too obvious. Only trap there if you want to shutdown that loop. Otherwise put traps around loops, in grass if available. End game is where you shine. You will want to look at the gens and decide which ones you want to protect and which to let go. If your chasing someone and they run to an area with no gens, no traps but lots of pallets. Just let them go and pressure someone else. Whenever possible, hook them in the basement and trap everywhere!!! Trapper thrives on over altruism. If you have a hex in a V shaped alcove, a trap is a good way to protect it. Trapping the exit gates is a great way to keep them in the match.
There's plenty of good trapper guides out there. Just know that he is a low tier killer and you will often struggle. It is nice when they step in a trap though. It feels like you out smarted them :)

One small thing I've had disproportionate success with:
If a survivor drops the shack pallet, I trap it rather than break it. A trap on the inside, survivor tries to run you to shack, and snap.
I've had more success with that trick than I probably should.
