Why I’m at my wits end with Dead By Daylight

I used to be able to play this game for hours a day… now, it’s about 15-30 minutes, equivalent to about 2-3 matches. In my opinon, this game keeps getting worse as the months and years go on. I can’t speak for everyone but this is what I have noticed in my games since I started playing up til today;

  • Camping has gone haywire; Almost every match the first person to get hooked is camped til 2nd stage or death despite how many gens are remaining and who the killer is.
  • Survior Perks have been getting nerfed back to back; Just recently COH received 2 hard nerfs, Boil Over lasted about a week, God forbid survivors get a perk they can get value out of or have fun with other than the meta, Parental Guidance didn’t even get a chance to make it to live without getting changed, and the new Boon is almost laughable… seems like the whole entire perk was born from a joke from 2 people at BHVR.
  • Despite new chapters coming out you only see 2-3 killers in your matches, one of which is long overdue for a nerf, I bet you who I’m talking about.
  • SBMM is so inconsistent on both sides, you either get sweats or you get people who barely know how to play the game.
  • The grind and the tome challenges are extreme at times. I honestly feel bad for newer players who want to commit to the game. Good luck leveling up to get all the tier 3 perks on both sides and thats not even taking into account if you want to prestige your character.
  • The current meta seems to be set in stone on both ends, I’m talking about the 3 gen regression perks with BBQ on killer and the same BT, DS, DH, and whatever 4th perk you wish to add. Isn’t that boring for both sides?

I can go on and on about why I feel this game is regressing, HAHA get it? Anyways:

TLDR; It feels like the game is going downhill because of certain things being changed or left unchanged along with the actions of both roles that leave the game extremely unenjoyable.

Yeah I've noticed a lot of friends of mine who use to play this game a lot started moving away because of all the camping lately. I understand camping is a good play style when the gens are popping like crazy since it feels bad when you're killer but at five gens it's kinda scummy in my opinion. I really hope we get a base kit buff to hooks make it where the timer slows down a bit if the killers near but have it go away during end game since I know end game is a good time to camp.

Obviously a survivor main here. I mean just take a break? I hate playing survivor because it's soo boring. And killer is just stress and bordem due to MMR.

After yet another GD "I had them dead to rights but they pressed E to ignore it", I am equally at my wits end with this F'ing game so I guess that makes two of us.

I've said it too many times to take my dumbass seriously but I desperately need to just uninstall this ######### game and be done with it forever.

It's currently uninstalled after this night but I expect based on history that I'm stupid enough that I'll reinstall it soon enough.

    I feel you...kinda.

    • Camping has always been an issue, but while I do see it way, way too much - 'always' is hyperbole. Camping is about as much fun for the killer as it is for everyone else. BHVR are working on a fix.
    • Uh...CoH is still brokenly OP. You shouldn't be able to heal mid chase as a duo with any perks. Boil Over...I'm not sure why you'd defend that one. Being completely unhookable from certain spots on certain maps basically enabled survivors to stall matches out indefinitely, unless you wanted to stare at a slug for ages. Why do you think Boil Over was fine, exactly?
    • Who? Cenobite? They already nerfed him, and I never saw much of him at all.
    • SBMM is also due for a fix soon. A lot of this is caused by backfill.
    • Grind - yup. But another one due for a fix soon.
    • I'm not sure what you mean by the meta being set in stone. Survivors...well, yes, but that has to do with how nuts CoH, DH and IW are. You're playing the game wrong if you don't have at least DH. The killer meta has never been as diverse as it is now. You've got CoB+PGTW, PR+Agi, PR+DMS, Ruin+Undying, even Plaything+Pentimento see some use. Then you've got plenty of other useful perks. You see BBQ a lot because of BP, not because it's particularly useful on many killers.

I agree that this game needs a shaking up, but I don't think that leaving Boil Over as a gigantic key to the trollmobile was the way to do it. I'd reckon that this mid-chapter is going to have a lot of very interesting changes.

I'm still...puzzled, as I'm not sure how someone could be that upset that Boil Over was changed.

Boil Over was just so abusive on certain maps.

  • Araphex
    Araphex Member Posts: 696

Some Survivor mains are only upset about survivor perks because they never had to play as one of the Killers, which all play differently compared to Survivor, and are overall harder to learn.

Thats why they get upset so easily over Survivor perks being balanced, which is what Boiled Over is finally after the insane, abusable buff it had. Before that, it was worthless. Now I'm seeing it used in some builds, including ones I use when playing survivor.

I use BO quite a bit and I definitely get value out of it. If you keep hook locations in mind and ensure you go down as far as possible from them (in a structure if you can), you'll get plenty of escapes.

Before the change, it was such a horror show that I ended up playing survivor for a week.

That said - it is easy to underestimate how difficult it can be to learn survivor too. I'd say that for new players, killers have the upper hand. At intermediate MMRs, survivors tend to have it easier. At the top of the ladder, things seem fairly even.

I completely agree with everything you said. It's just frustrating that almost every discussion I see lately is nerf this killer, nerf that killer perk, the game is too hard, ect all from players who only play survivor and have no idea what its like to play killer.

I also play Elden Ring. I've beaten previous Souls games. Those are hard. They aren't impossible, but that's hard and rewarding at the same time. Nobody who actually play those games complains about difficulty.

But I've seen with past multiplayer games that the majority usually win over the devs, and the nerfs come and the games become unplayable. I don't know, I'm just venting I guess but yeah, I agree with what your saying completely. There may be small imbalances here and there and I know it takes time to smooth things out. Just tired of seeing nothing but complain I guess, and yet here I am doing it. I'll shut up now lol. Sorry.

Camping and tunneling has gotten more popular since COH. Which, despite being nerfed twice, is still way too strong. And no, they weren't really "hard nerfs", the first one made it so you couldn't heal faster than the killer can hit you, and the second made a self heal take a whopping 2 extra seconds. Not really a hard nerf if you ask me.

Boil Over was extremely abusable and wasn't healthy for the game. You can't seriously say that survivors running to the tops of main buildings or to RPD library or whatever and being unhookable was a good thing. There were plenty of ways to buff that perk without making it broken, and they made it broken so they had to go back on it. That never should've gone live in the first place.

Yeah, Dark Theory is too situational to be good most of the time. But that's the inherent problem with the design of boons. They need a complete rework from the ground up or they're never going to be in a good spot. Parental Guidance imo should've been 8 seconds. 10 was a bit much, 7 is a bit too little, but it's still a decent perk.

Blight needs addon nerfs, yes. His basekit is okay though.

SBMM and the grind suck, I agree with you there.

Yeah, the meta has been stale and always has been. There were some good new perks in 2021 but for survivors it's mostly just the same as it was with COH introduced into the mix and for killers it's still all about slowdown, there's just more options now than there were before.

MMR and Boons have been a huge negative for the game. IMO get rid of both of these and the game becomes 10x more healthy.

Freddy was braindead because he was easy AF to play but gave incredible value for nothing, especially when played with specific meta perks. He was like playing killer with training wheels. He was boring to play for both sides but he had immense pressure without any requirement. If you played other killers before you could just pick him up and insta-win, his anti-loop was easy to use and effective on small or medium loops, and once the snowball was rolling he could just teleport around to get huge Pop/Ruin value. He also had annoying slowdown-add ons, which together with his permanent teleports to gens made playing against him an excercise of patience. Sure, he was still an M1 killer who had to play around pallets but with his semi-stealth and anti loop he had good tools for that. He was hated by almost everyone i know.

Blight should get a small nerf, at least some of his add ons, or make him 110%, i mean he is fine generally but he is kinda like Nurse, as soon as you're good with him the counterplay goes to 0. He get's so many bullshit hits, all the hug-tech stuff around cars and stuff, as soon as you're out of pallets you are just dead in 2 seconds.

The only reason people like to play against Blight is that 90% of the pub-Blights are not good and do too many mistakes.

It's because the average survivor is pretty awful at this game. And for some reason instead of trying to improve their own gameplay, they just want to nerf everything so they don't have to learn anything.

  • fulltonon
    fulltonon Member Posts: 5,762

Hug tech is mindgaming, aka perfectly counterable.

If "no counterplay" is the reasoning for nerfs there is no killer who deserved to be nerfed.

Somehow that username does not surprise me and I can't think why. /S

God forbid survivors get a perk they can get value out of or have fun with other than the meta

Despite new chapters coming out you only see 2-3 killers in your matches,

Ironic that both problems have the same reasoning and could just be rewritten respectively for the other side.

"God forbid killerplayer get characters that they can be viable or have fun with at all skilllevel/MMR/whatever."

"Despite new chapter with 3 new perks coming out you only see the same meta perks on most survivor in your matches."

Both problems are interchangable and stem from the fear of the devs to create more strong stuff and having to rebalance it. And for a good reason.

Riot (league of legends devs) for example bring out a new champion that is most often overturned but rebalance them after 2 weeks on average or even faster when brokenly op.

Behaviour takes 6weeks to 3 months or even more to balance something if it isn't completely game breaking. Imagine they would bring overturned stuff into the game and how long we would need to wait in a completely balancewise broken state.

(Oh wait, we don't need to imagine that since coh is still in the game nearly in it's release state.)

No it isn't, i've scrimmed against many different comp Blights and there is no "perfect counter" at all around cars or similar things, even if you guess right. Sometimes when there is a pallet you know that he can't rush around it because of collision, that's it. He is way too fast to react on small loops and all you can do is drop the pallet and then it's a deadzone. If people mindgame you as Blight on cars then it's a you-problem. He is the most played killer in most comp scrims and for a reason...

same here, well except work is taking most of my time nowadays, but i play one match of survivor and its always been a boring experience with nurse, blights, and bubbas. i'd rather watch the game than play it now

Playing survivor are really boring, the only skill expression is looping and the most used killers are ignoring the mechanic.

So it's very dull and pointless

  • danielmaster87
    danielmaster87 Member Posts: 9,677

You lost me at survivor perk nerfs. Those are arbitrary. Survivors will still be crushing killers all the time.

The reason you only see 2-3 killers all the time is because that's how many are viable. You nerf them, and killer players will simply have to move on to the next strongest killer, not because they want to feel OP, but because they're desperately clinging to a killer with tools to combat high end survivors.

Any killers you're losing to right now who use 3 regression and BBQ all the time, that's not a good build they're using. Gen delay like Corrupt, Deadlock, Dead Man's is fine, but not really gen regression. Gen regression perks require survivors to give the killer constant downs. You'll be lucky to use Pop 3 times in some matches, before all the gens are done. Info perks are also overrated. What's the point of seeing where a survivor's at if you can't down them quickly? The game could be over by the time the chase ends.

I know solo Q is tough, but if anyone has a reason to quit the game, it's killers.

No killers should have "perfect counter" against them because otherwise it's unwinnable game, if you can make it 50/50, that's good enough.

While doing hug tech, blight can't get AWAY from object, just go elsewhere and it's good.

COH deserved its nerfs, boil over should never have gone live in that state, but I agree parental guidance never even had a chance (I wouldn't see it being that popular originally, but it might've seen some use)

Regressing is a good way to put it. Game gets more and more frustrating and impossible for survivors.
