Why has dbd not put a voice chat into their game?

It’s 2022 and dbd feels like it’s still in the dark ages, almost every multiplayer game has comms and yet dbd still hasn’t?

I think it might be two things:

1: Some players get pretty emotional in the after game chat if they're playing with strangers and there was voice chat it'd be a PR nightmare with people shouting abuse and blaming each other for any mistake and it'd put off a lot of players from playing.

2: If it's just enabled for premade groups then they'd have to address the balance between solo survivor's and premade groups and also probally buff the killer to match any survivor buffs.

While I agree with you, that's just too bad. Even some of the worst communities have vc like valorant and overwatch. If you really don't wanna hear people screaming then have there be a mute option, right? It's that simple.

Even with a mute option. It would change the atmosphere the game has. For the better and for the worse. Even if it is the only way to balance solo and swf accordingly.

aren’t language barriers, people with bad mics, background also an issue in val and overwatch? Yet they still have it.

And I don’t like this and don’t play those games (well that’s of course not the only reason)

though it seems like BHVR is also thinking DbD shouldn’t have it. Not every game has to have the same features after all.

True but u cld always just mute, let ppl who want it, have it. You don’t have to talk or listen to any of the players, it’s like it wldn’t even exist for you.

Yeah. That’s what I have said in this thread.

as long as the devs are not starting to then balance around voicechat though. That’s when i will complain :)

    • There’s a myth the devs don’t expect people to play on comms. In fact they fully expected swfs to play on comms from the beginning, and they play on comms themselves all the time.
    • That said they also have said they don’t feel the need to spend development time on adding voice chat into the game itself on PC since there are multiple good free popular third party options like Discord or Steam chat or Google chat, etc, that people currently use that offer the same service basically.
    • Finally they don’t want local proximity chat in game where everybody can hear chatter of nearby characters because it would be bad for the ambience and distracting for a lot of players.

The third party options are great unless ur in solo q… and again u can just mute.

That is a good point about solo queue survivors being unable to chat with strangers on the fly, I’m sure some players would appreciate that. (And yeah, they option if it were added would presumably be turned off by default so a player would have to opt in.)

Fair. Then again, the whole horror thing went out the window when looping was a thing so I see no plausible reason as to why we can't have proximity vc and vc in general with pre and post-game.

    There's a couple of reasons.

First, the games typically cited when talking about how most games have voice chat aren't really directly comparable to DBD. Games like Valorant and Overwatch are explicitly competitive, and I'm using that term in the more serious sense- obviously DBD is competitive literally since there are two teams competing against one another, but it's not a game with a ranked ladder or aspirations to be an e-sport, and so the design philosophy behind those games isn't immediately and inherently useful to this one.

Second, it would demolish the tone and ambience. Take every problem with voice comms in other games - language barrier, toxic yelling, chewing into the mic, people playing music, etcetera - double them, and then filter them through the lens of not actually achieving anything. It would make the game materially, tangibly worse, while not fixing any current issues or adding anything substantial.

Third is I think where people usually end up- there's a perception that while it'd have the downsides mentioned above, it'd at least close the gap between SWF and SoloQ, right? Unfortunately, no.

Let's put it this way. If the core problem is that you are at a huge disadvantage because you cannot communicate important information to your team, how is that fixed by being able to talk to three other people who may or may not actually speak the same language as you? Overwatch has a ping system, automated callouts, a manual callout wheel, auras through walls, a UI that shows your teammate's ultimate charge... on top of the disparity between groups and solo players not being as big of a balance problem anyway, the game has a ton of features to help you at least make good decisions based on what your team is doing even when you can't talk to them.

Compare to DBD, which has none. Voice chat wouldn't fix that. It might partially fix it if you're on the NA servers, but a solution that only sometimes sorta works for one region's worth of players is not a solution at all. In short: it'd make the game materially worse and would fix nothing.

Better would be to focus on giving solo players information without the need for voice comms, and their first suggestion for that is actually pretty good!

Yh I wld rlly love the icons on players to see what they’re up to. Literally the only reason I asked this is because I got the worst solo q players yesterday who blamed me for being useless, when they made me go to 2nd stage and I was the first hooked. The Élodie had empathy and cld see me running around either looking for a medkit or another player to heal me cos I was on DEATH HOOK, she literally had empathy and refused to heal me and the felix, she was a 2-man with Jake they were just healing eachother. Who runs empathy to not heal their teammates? bro if I had comms I wld’ve been telling her to come heal me.

Unfortunately telling her to come heal you wouldn't result in much, that just sounds like a bad player who blames their teammates for their own poor decisions. With voice comms, they'd just be chewing you out during the game instead of in the endgame chat.

Oh no - i don´t wanna hear random screams, noises, eating, or children talking.

    Thanks.

Pick a few Spooknjukes videos at random and you'll get plenty of reason why voice chat is not a Thing.

I don't need anyone yelling racial and/or homophobic slurs at me in voice chat or throwing the game because I don't want to use voice chat because of the aforementioned stuff.

    My opinion: https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/314431/guided-voice-system-communication-wheel-system-for-solo-survivors

the best way to avoid the chasm between SWF and SoloQ is a communication wheel in the game.

It's been a while since I made this suggestion, but unfortunately what make successful on forum, even in the suggestions area are posts like "US vs Them"

Lot of negative Nancys in this thread, just wanted to make solo q less torturous for myself and you’re all treating it like every dbd player is gonna kill you in ur sleep tf

This is actually a really good idea, they shld really implement this. If they decide to do an operation health in this game, this shld be a big priority!

If there's going to be in game comms I will be the first person to quite this game because we will have like 9 year old kids just going around and saying the F words and the N words like the will be like Friday the 13th like the reason why that game died was because of in game comms and if DBD adds in comms into the game then DBD will just die very fast because of other people are going to get annoyed from another person saying weird and unnecessary things and also listening to bad music so the answer is a 100% NO for me and if it's added in the I'll be the first person to quite this game I'm a lot of people can agree with me on this

If I had to deal with people screeching at me for not doing what they want I'd lose my mind. No thank you.
