If the game is 18+ why so much censorship on words?
I can't even have a polite conversation on this game anymore without half of it being #####ing out. Whats worse is not knowing what these 'hot words' are to avoid them so when you do try and have a civil or kind conversation it just looks like you're being mean and salty because half the text is blocked.
WHY?! this game is (supposedly) for 18+ mature players. So Why block so many words that arent even offensive? And even if they are 'offensive' what about CONTEXT?
If I want to THANK a killer for NOT tunneling or camping or any other crap types of behavior I can't because it gets #######ing out. So I look like a prick for saying "Hey man thanks for not #### me and my team mates really ######### it. Thanks for #####. ####."
Why are we toning down an adult game as if it were to be played by kids?
Simple every day words too, not just the big swears and racial slurs. Which, BTW racial slurs come through ALL THE TIME. But Camper? Tunneling? SEDUCE?!?!? The legal Male name of DICK? All banned all ######.
Make it make sense.

You dont want to hurt anyone feelings in 2022. Thats the world we live in today.

The point of a chat censor has nothing to do with the age of the playerbase, it's to stop harassment and toxicity where possible. This game's chat censor is bad not because it exists, but because for some reason it was designed to censor more than just curse words, slurs, and common aggressive phrasing.
To be clear; the point of a chat censor in any game that isn't explicitly aimed at kids is the same, it's not to protect the delicate eyes of its players from any naughty words. It's to try and curtail just how viciously awful someone can be to another person over text.
(Also all chat censors in adult-aimed games should be optional, in my opinion.)
13 -
Because you shouldn't curse around children.
0 -
I see more kids than adults on this game for some reason. Kinda like GTA 5
1 -
Yeah games are getting worse and worse for this, but even games in the past that was 18+ had the f word and everything in yet you couldn't type it...
A sensitive world we live in nowadays
1 -
Because a lot of adults are fragile and sensitive.

Introduce the ability to turn in game chat off and on. BOOM. Problem solved. it's not like DBD has voice chat, you don't HAVE to listen. BHVR doesnt give the proper tools for players to make their own decisions.

Yeah its like if you dont like the content, just disable it, but nope.
Today the solution is to remove for everyone, and censor for everyone, just so others dont feel bad.
Nothing to be done, have to accept, this is how works now.
1 -
Yup, I am a big boy now and I am old enough to be able to cope with people saying naughty words or mean things so I wish we could opt out. Some of the censored words are absurd as we all know.
I think they did it as it saves them going through a lot of reports for people being rayciss etc since they cant type the words in the first place. Though people still find inventive ways around it of course
1 -
Well, there should be the ability to engage in the chat without risking people being vile, immature freaks at you, but in fairness I don't really think chat censors are that effective in that regard anyway.
The solution, from my perspective, has more to do with penalties for toxic players and encouragements to avoid that kind of behaviour. Still, a proper chat censor wouldn't be that big of a deal- if the chat censor in-game was the same as the one on these forums, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Especially if it were optional.
Regardless. The bottom line, the censor has nothing to do with this being a game for adults. Those two things aren't related, that's my point.

Because the rating is for the content in the game, not online communications.. that's not how video game ratings work.
I wish they'd just remove the ######### chat altogether so we can stop seeing these whining posts.

The chat is censored because of toxicity? I really doubt that. Simple words as youtube, thank you etc are censored. There is simply no point in having a chat in the game when 99% of common words are marked as toxic to prevent toxicity. Also people are just gonna use synonyms or make up racial slurs that won't be censored, if they really want to be toxic.
Either remove the chat or disable the filter. There's no point in having a chat that can only contain squares...
1 -
Literally the phrase "To prove a point" Is ####ed
0 -
If we can't have simple conversations pertaining to the match why bother having a chat in the first place? If everyone must be Please and thank you. No and thank you. thank you and thank you. Oh wait.. thank you gets ##### Too....
Just remove the chat, or have it auto send GGS WP ILY and buttkissings to everyone and send them to the next match.

Because some people can't stop sending slurs in the chat.
So as usual, the few ruin it for the many.
12 -
Adult Children, that's why.
Both those that insult and those that listen. Age can't fix these infants.
1 -
people when they realise that they can't call people slurs anymore
10 -
Good thing that companies protect all from the harm, like good parents protecting the child, we dont know any better.
1 -
That's a GREAT question.
We have to bubble wrap everything these days because feelings.
1 -
this topic reminds me off my favorite overwatch chat spam when people start fighting.
"See? That's the thing with you Plastics, you think that everybody is in love with you when actually, everybody hates you. Like Aaron Samuels for example, He broke up with Regina and guess what! He still doesn't want you! So why are you still messing with Regina, Katie!? I'll tell you why, because you are a mean girl! You're a ######### !"

Im sure half the player base is under 12 so there you go lol

To be fair, I don’t think they’re complaining about actual slurs being censored, they’re complaining that commonplace words and phrases are also censored for apparently no reason. Bizarre things like, if I remember right, you can’t say the names of some perks and characters or even the names of some streamers? (I could be wrong but I’m sure people will post examples if I’m remembering right.)
I don’t have a problem personally with a chat filter blurring out racial and homophobic slurs and such. Screw that noise. But why it censors ordinary words I have no idea.
1 -
The only issue with the chat filter is the fact it isn't optional, it's pretty arrogant of bhvr to think they have the right to override what YOU personally are okay with reading. Big brother knows best apparently.
3 -
FACTS just remove slurs from the game, thats it. I shouldn't find other ways to say the f word in game chat. I always laugh at how ridiculous an 18+ game restricts that
0 -
Mature doesn't have to mean vulgar tho.
0 -
I think it's mainly because they don't have the manpower to police all the reports. The second reason is because they don't want to lose on their numbers. 10, 20, xx bans a day adds up.
0 -
The censor system is censoring names and personal information too.
Besides what kind of conversation are you trying to have post game chat?
0 -
censors are pretty ineffective at stopping harassment, ect. I get lot of people telling me to "commit un-alive" because I beat them in a video game. It's not that big of a deal, but sometimes it can be a little disturbing if I'm really tired and can't think straight.
1 -
They should work on the system sure. Racist/Homophobic slurs should be censored.
but Swear words should not.
Killer and survivors names should not.
Perk and map names should not.
1 -
I generally agree with that, but I think having the baseline of barring certain slurs from being typed is still a perfectly acceptable decision to make, and including curse words in there is also generally harmless.
My point in bringing it up is specifically that evoking the game being rated as 18+ is irrelevant, the point of the chat censor has nothing to do with the age of the playerbase.
3 -
I just think it's funny that "teabag" is censored.
I had some guy yesterday ask "why did you BM?" and I was gonna say "because you teabagged me" and it came out "Because you ########"
1 -
The chat system is a shadow of what it used to be. I've really come to enjoy the cognitive dissonance though.
If you're going to get mad at a word, you're looking for it. I say that because you can read words on their own and if it causes you to go into a panic attack like the devil being forced to read the Bible, and you tell someone that then they can scribble the word on a paper and control you. Do as I say or be forced to read the word.
Is # or having the word less effective? If you're being insulted you probably still know what it is, but let's go a step further. There is a wide audience for Dead by Daylight now. What if it's just a misunderstanding and a foreign person doesn't know that you're sensitive to a specific word? It's not their language and outside of their interaction with you here they have no obligation to know or care any further about your language.
Stop gettin' mad at video games.
0 -
It should only censor slurs really that should be every chat censor
0 -
Because while there are genuine words that should be edited out because they are harmful and used to oppress others.
People are basically offended by everything these days. So the censor needs a wide net.
Everything is a personal attack and everything is offensive. Even GG isn’t a polite “good game” it’s a personal taunt designed to ruin your fun.
So censor it all because lil Timmy’s feelings got hurt and that’s the end of the world.
“Won’t somebody please think of the children!”
There is no 18+ anymore it’s all pg13, the cry babies have won.
Maybe they should implement the emoji responses only suggested by the questionnaire. The irony of giving people a smiley face sticker after brutally stabbing them to death in a video game because they died well is just comedy.
Pure comedy, but it’ll probably offend someone so we better censor the pictures.
2 -
It was made to prevent threats, slurs, aggressive insults, etc. However, the chat censor was poorly implemented and needs to be fixed to censor the words/sentences that actually need it. And considering that this is a rated M game, the chat censor should be an option that you can turn on or off in the settings menu.
0 -
I think there should be a base of slurs that are universally censored, and a clearly defined select few (we all know the ones) that when used will trigger an instaban of the user posting it. Like the second the system detects it, you're banned.
All "general" (foul language without a established connotation or association with a group of people) profanity should be allowed.
Threats and non-slur personal attacks should be investigated on a case by case basis, and certain words commonly associated with threats should be flagged.
I also think the chat censor is just absurdly inconsistent, and seems to routinely censor even the most mundane words.
But really, profanity isn't necessary, and while certain sentence enhancers can add some flavor to a conversation, if you can't express yourself without it, that is just a poor reflection on your intellect. If your contribution shows up as nothing but asterisks, it probably wasn't worth seeing.

One word my friend. Snowflakes.
Don't hate on me that's just how I feel.
World Peace ✌️

I don't think many adults are really gonna be too bothered that the "obvious suspects" are censored, like slurs and the like.
I am of the firm belief that such systems should be optional however. If someone doesn't mind seeing whatever people say, it should be their decision. And I also believe the system trying to be "clever" in whatever way it does instead of a good old word blacklist can do more harm than good, an unfortunately placed **** can make a perfectly fine sentence seem anything from mean to straight up vile. I'd prefer if you could know for sure that any time you saw **** in chat, you immediately know they said something that's straight up reportable.

It's the Scunthorpe problem and trying to support multiple languages on top of a potentially overzealous approach to what needs censoring. Something offensive in a word? Censor it to be sure (though this one's got less likely over time even with automated censors). Offensive in some other language? Censor it to be sure. Result: incomprehensible blocking out for all.

It censored me saying Claudette or Myers, but didn't censor an actual swear words, I can't tell my teammates in lobby that i'm gonna open chests for quest cuz it won't let me say it.
So the DBD censor is a huge clown fiesta xD

im find with slurs being censored, whatever but yea some normal every day words are censored. one time i was saying something to a bill in egc and "bill" was literally censored. what?
