Hello! I’m Watery.

I always have tons of questions that I frequent the DBD discord chat rooms with; most of then concerning the state of the game. In order to better facilitate instructions, I typically provide tons of questions, wiggle room— none that you have to answer, but I like to hear opinions from all sides of the table.

With that being said, here are the questions I have for the community, by a community member. My only request is: Tell me WHY you think that way. Expand upon it, & don’t shy from the deep discussion!

new chapter; surface level

  • How do you feel about the chapter’s concept?
  • How do you feel about The Killer?
  • How do you feel about The Survivor?
  • How do you feel about the map?

new chapter; light discussion questions

  • How does The Drudge fare in comparison to other Killers? What makes him standout?
  • How do you feel about playing against the Dredge?
  • What makes Haddie unique compared to other survivors?
  • How do Haddie’s perks line up? What do you think of her overall— gameplay design? (Granted, survivors are skins of each other; this is purely from a perk stance.)

New chapter, and design: The juicy ones.

  • How do you feel about the theme of this chapter?
  • What were your expectations?
  • What tools is The Dredge lacking to be successful? If not, what makes it successful?
  • What do you define as healthy gameplay? Do Haddie or The Dredge’s kits violate this in anyway? Why?
  • Do you think the design of Dredge is a step in the right direction?
  • How do you feel this chapter compares to other recent releases?
  • What do you think Haddie’s kit reveals. about the survivor design philosophy?
  • Do you think there’s a problem with the design philosophy on either sides of the moment? Why?

I’ll ask more later.

If I do participate in the discussion, please note that I am a survivor player. I have played Killer to higher degrees, but that was a month or so— so my opinion in that regard has a potential to be biased.

Q: How do you feel about the chapter’s concept?

A: I think the concept for the Chapter is pretty cool.

Q: How do you feel about The Killer?

A: The Killer looks amazing, a really good Power concept, it's based around the boogeyman, and what a boogeyman it is.

Q: How do you feel about The Survivor?

A: I'm not interested in Survivors, I don't even buy them 90% of the time, but her design is unique, and I heard she's prominent in the lore so that's nice.

Q: How do you feel about the map?

A: I think the concept of the Map is really cool, memories stitched together in 1 Realm sounds neat, but, like I said, I'm on console so I can't give my honest opinion on it.

Q: How does The Drudge fare in comparison to other Killers? What makes him standout?

A: I think it's pretty good, it's got good mobility and an interesting chase Power, kind of like a mobile Hag, with a bit of Spirit in there.

His Nightfall makes him standout, along with his design of course. There never really has been a Power that manipulates the Map like Dredges Nightfall does, can't wait for its bugs to get patched in the final release.

Q: How do you feel about playing against the Dredge?

A: On console, but I'll probably get scared a lot.

Q: What makes Haddie unique compared to other survivors?

A: Her design, and probably her lore but I don't read the lore, I just watch Pixelbush' videos.

Q: How do Haddie’s perks line up? What do you think of her overall— gameplay design?

A: Her Perks look interesting, but I don't think 2/3 of them will be all that useful.

The only I see being useful is the Blindness Perk, hiding Auras from the Killer will be painful.

Q: How do you feel about the theme of this chapter?

    A: It's pretty good.

    Q: What were your expectations?

A: I had none, I was fully expecting the Anniversary to be a massive letdown, so I didn't get my hopes up at all.

Q: What tools is The Dredge lacking to be successful? If not, what makes it successful?

A: I don't think the Dredge is lacking any tools to be successful, I would like for it to teleport a little bit faster, it's pretty slow at long distances, and for Dredge to be faster while leaving its Remnant behind, it being that slow makes mindgaming with it a chore.

Q: What do you define as healthy gameplay? Do Haddie or The Dredge’s kits violate this in anyway? Why?

A: Healthy gameplay, in my opinion, is gameplay that is interactive, powerful and counterable for both sides, so something like Blight that isn't using Alchemist Ring or Compound Thirty-Three.

Haddie's Blindness Perk doesn't really violate it, but I don't personally like it and think it needs a nerf, as its only reliable counter is Lightborn, and that's 1/4 of the Killers Perks to counter 1/16 Survivor Perks.

    Dredge is fine.

Q: Do you think the design of Dredge is a step in the right direction?

A: Yes, 100%, totally. We needed a break after the boring and repetitive "Mid-ranged antiloop Killer" that we've been getting, and while Dredge isn't the one to break the cycle, it probably took the biggest step in the right direction.

A Killer that focuses on Map traversal and manipulation, while still having some chase capabilities and all that, while having meaningful counterplay.

Q: How do you feel this chapter compares to other recent releases?

    A:

Q: What do you think Haddie’s kit reveals. about the survivor design philosophy?

A: The devs are looking into afflicting Killers with debuffs, which doesn't sound good.

Q: Do you think there’s a problem with the design philosophy on either sides of the moment? Why?

A: No, I just hope Survivors don't get any more Perks that inflict Killers with any debilitating Status Effects, like Hindered or Incapacitated but for Killer Powers instead of Generators

Okay, so my main issue with this chapter is they set up this song and dance about shifting the meta, 40 perks will be reworked because they care, or whatever. But one look at these 6 perks contradicts that sentiment, I knew not to trust them; the only silver lining is that Wesker will have all perks for free once he launches so worthless perks do not trigger me as much as they did.

You know what does, however? Dredge. Just because he has some minor, counterable anti loop with map mobility, he is magically better than 75% of the killers in the game. That just bothers me. This guy is already getting prenerfed heavily to the point where they are pretending they cannot code a brightness setting without it bugging out. He is probably going to be the Artist 2.0 where everyone cries about him but nobody plays him.

    Interesting.

Do you think there’s a fundamental problem with killer design, from a general standpoint?

Do you think some level of pressure, 1v1, 1v4, & or map should be standardized?

How do you feel about the chapter’s concept?

I quite like it honestly. It fits really well with the whole idea of the Entity and the Realm, I wish BHVR branched out more often like this.

How do you feel about The Killer?

He is decently fun, but the Nightfall ability needs a serious buff. The darkness was all hyped up, but it pretty much amounted to nothing and that's a huge disappointment, especially for an anniversary event.

How do you feel about The Survivor?

No strong feeling really. It's cool that someone from lore got introduced, but she was never someone I was all that interested in.

How do you feel about the map?

Never actually played it, only saw it on streams, looks fine, although it comes across as incredibly cluttered and harder to navigate than usual. The main building is also insanely dark and has some strong loops that are exasperating.

How does The Drudge fare in comparison to other Killers? What makes him standout?

The fact that we finally have a killer that interacts with lockers is great, the Nightfall would be a very neat event if it worked properly. There's potential here, I'm just not sure BHVR can properly capitalize on it.

How do you feel about playing against the Dredge?

His antilooping ability promotes Shift+W of which I'm not fond of, but otherwise he isn't some terribly oppressive killer like Nurse or Blight so that's nice.

What makes Haddie unique compared to other survivors?

    Nothing for me personally.

How do Haddie’s perks line up? What do you think of her overall— gameplay design? (Granted, survivors are skins of each other; this is purely from a perk stance.)

Not a fan of the idea that we can now debuff the killer, it's just going to promote more bullying and is antithetical to the idea of the killer being the power role (as laughably hilarious as that is considering the current balance of the game)

How do you feel about the theme of this chapter?

Same as the answer to the first question.

    What were your expectations?

Pretty much what we got honestly.

What tools is The Dredge lacking to be successful? If not, what makes it successful?

Nightfall needs a huge buff, a survivor shouldn't really see anything beyond a few meters. It would promote skill since you have to pay attention to your surroundings all throughout the match to know where to go if you get chased. Otherwise, it feels fairly healthy to me at this point.

What do you define as healthy gameplay? Do Haddie or The Dredge’s kits violate this in anyway? Why?

No camping/tunneling and no bullying the killer. The Dredge's mobility will always make it easier to single out a survivor, but on the grand scheme of things I don't think it promotes unhealthy gameplay. As mentioned before, Haddie's perk to inflict blindness on the Killer feels like a step in the wrong direction to me. DS was a good fight back perk, but we are getting more and more of those, head on, blast mine, now this, I'm not too fond of this trend.

Do you think the design of Dredge is a step in the right direction?

Unique killer with a uniqe ability, so absolutely!

How do you feel this chapter compares to other recent releases?

Significantly stronger than previous releases. Dredge>>>Artist>Sadako

What do you think Haddie’s kit reveals. about the survivor design philosophy?

    See the answers above.

Do you think there’s a problem with the design philosophy on either sides of the moment? Why?

The devs are pushing to make non camping and tunneling focused gameplay more enticing for killers and that's great. Unfortunately, it feels like they want to shake things up for survivors by giving them more and more opportunities to fight back. And while I agree that holding M1 on gens is incredibly boring, I'm not sure this is the way to do things. Especially since MMR is so crap.

    NEW CHAPTER; SURFACE LEVEL

    • How do you feel about the chapter’s concept?
    • I like it, it fits and progresses the lore. In relation to how DBD collabs with Animes and pleases the weirdos of the community with the dating sim im happy that the core game stay so far in an acceptable direction.
    • How do you feel about The Killer?
    • Hes cool, i might even play him. I think the idea of the killer power to teleport around lockers was around in the dbd community for a very long time, i remember reading about it in 2016/17. So im happy to hear weve got this implemented during the lifetime of dbd. The Nightfall was something i always liked as an idea for DBD currently the effect is quite dissappointing so im looking forward to see how it looks like when they fix the issues regarding it.
    • How do you feel about The Survivor?
    • Like it, not a character for the thirsty side of the community which is already a big plus. She seems to have also some character, an interesting ability and lore to read into. She reminds me a bit of Bill in how she reacts to opponents, so its cool to have an female counterpart for this kind of more tough behavior.
    • How do you feel about the map?
    • I like the lore and the possibilities regarding the realm sounds like were getting mulitple maps in the realm which im exited for. I also like how disjointed and weird it is desing wise. Balance wise they seem to have done fine, i didnt play it but from watching some gameplay it seems to have the right size and the house doesnt seems op. I couldnt be happier.

    NEW CHAPTER; LIGHT DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

    • How does The Drudge fare in comparison to other Killers? What makes him standout?
    • The Map Mobility he has is really good in comparison to most other killers, yet hes an M1 killer with a mediocre anti loop and people will struggle against really good survivors. Chase wise he seems to weak to withstand in high mmr and this will be one bigger reason why he will loose games. What stands out to me is how fun he seems to play and to play against yet most people i saw having a blast.
    • How do you feel about playing against the Dredge?
    • My Impression is that he can be quite suprising with his locker ability, but its not really a new concept how to loop him. Nightfall would disappoint me as Survivor - i wanted the challenge to remember the map against the darkness and wanted to feel the scary atmosphere during nightfall this isnt the case right now.
    • How do Haddie’s perks line up? What do you think of her overall— gameplay design? (Granted, survivors are skins of each other; this is purely from a perk stance.)
    • I know the game has to progress to feel fresh but status effect on killers are so weird. As killer you feel already so limited in your tactical gameplay options and now they want to limit the killer abilities even more. Im not a big fan how bhvr made bullying the biggest secondary survivor objective i think they should have gone for something demanding and creative to expand the gameplay. Beside the gen time its probably one of the core issues why we have so less Killers now because people dont want to get embarrassed and feel weak when they are supposed to play a powerrole. Listening to how the "recreational fear lab" thinks about this game is really questionable and for me just proved again how out of touch they are with the mood and gameplay they create ingame.

NEW CHAPTER, AND DESIGN: THE JUICY ONES.

    • What were your expectations?
    • I was aware of the leaks and had a feeling they were true. Prior that leak i thought this chapter will be disappointing but its nice. Im quite hard to impress so i usually prepare for the other side.
    • What tools is The Dredge lacking to be successful? If not, what makes it successful?
    • Two Points i recognized so far, he needs less of a decreased movement speed while channeling his power maybe 100% instead of 92% to not loose distance could be enough but it has to be tested. Second is obviously the nightfall which should have a tinier vision radius for survs between 8-12m.
    • What do you define as healthy gameplay? Do Haddie or The Dredge’s kits violate this in anyway? Why?
    • As healthy gameplay i understand skillful and tactical gameplay which are counterable to an extend by their likes and not frequently by skillless advantages, as well as troll, meme and fun moments for stress reduction reasons.
    • The Basekits? No i dont see that. Beside if you include the perks then what ive wrote above about haddie.
    • Do you think the design of Dredge is a step in the right direction?
    • I love the design, we need more monsters in DBD. I would also love to see more maps which remind of mosters instead of more houses. The Art Design team is usually doing quite well in this game i also love how rpd or eyrie of crows looks like but its a nightmare to play as a low mobility killer, the team responsible for balancing usually ruins the effort of them and they get hatted on by the community which is a shame.
    • How do you feel this chapter compares to other recent releases?
    • I would be ashamed working for BHVR to release a license chapter as weak as Sadakos. This one instead seems to be mostly well shaped i like it.
    • What do you think Haddie’s kit reveals. about the survivor design philosophy?
    • What i wrote above about haddie.
    • Do you think there’s a problem with the design philosophy on either sides of the moment? Why?

I think we have to wait how the perk and gameplay changes turn out to answer that. Thats why i cant really judge the current perks either. If there wouldve be no announcement for a change i would have deleted the game the moment i saw the gen speed reduction perk and wouldnt have come back for months or years. This way i play a bit less right now to not burn out with the current state of the game but keep an eye on it and see what they will implement.
