An edge case how to close the hatch

Why is the hatch closed when getting grabbed while jumping through the hatch with key? And why is the key not consumed? The hatch gets opened, the survivor jumps through and then gets grabbed and key does not get consumed and hatch closes itself?? What is the reason behind it? I thought once hatch is open, it cannot be closed?

If opened with a key, it only remains open a short while (unless the regular conditions for hatch are met). I'd imagine that using the key and escaping consumes the key, so if you're grabbed out the hatch wasn't officially opened since no escape was made.

And how do you interpret the key description "Can be consumed to open the hatch."?

And I'm sorry, what do you mean by "officially"? The hatch is either open or closed or do I miss something?

I mean, if using the Key automatically pops the Survivor into the Hatch, and the Killer grabbed them out preventing the escape, the Key isn't technically consumed and so the Hatch remains closed. I would imagine.

But one can clearly see that FIRST the hatch openes, and according to key description, it should consume the key, and THEN when hatch is FULLY OPEN the survivor attempts to jump through. How else could the hatch be opened in the first place without consuming the key? It's not possible because then you would not even need a key to open it ...

It's a moot point in any case. If you're the last one alive then you're dead and you lost the key. If you're saved and make it back you have the key.
