Will bhvr ever update dbd to unreal engine 5?
just wondering since ue5 was like just released and that

Prolly melt the Switch and all the last gen consoles if they did...

if they improve perfomance with that YES....if they not DEFINETLY NO , the game currently has really poor optimization.

According to my experience with unreal engine 5 there is really no need at all to switch to unreal engine 5 mainly because:
- The new version of the engine has just added lumen which is some kind of a raytracing engine, VERY realistic but kills the GPU easily (mine's a gtx 1660), it also added nanite which is that new technology that replaces LOD and makes a model low-poly the farther you go and other various things that the game doesn't need at all, so now we crossed out lumen and nanite which the game doesn't need, and if they were to implement nanite they would have to enable nanite in every model and asset (and some require you to modify the material for it to work).
- Switching my ue4 projects to ue5 was SOO painful, and even for a small project like an FPS, now imagine this game getting switched to ue5... absolute pain, just imagine the cluster-#### of bugs that would emerge... and that's for nothing.
- Other new features are Temporal Super-Resolution and Virtual Shadow Maps which AGAIN the game doesn't need at all.
- as JPLongstreet mentioned, older generation devices would suffer.. and yes including my gtx 1660
So why bother switching? besides, the ue4 editor is MUCH faster than the ue5 editor. maybe because it's new? (5.0.3)

Holy ######### your image spooked the hell out of me.

Epic Games moved all of their games to UE5 and their games still run insanely smooth on last-gen consoles, even their more graphically intense games run smoother than DbD currently does. The main thing is that DbD isnt insanely optimized, so switching engines might cause some issues.
1 -
I hope not. Some toasters might start burning if its as optimized as its right now.
2 -
The last time some details about game performance were dropped by the Community Managers, they emphasized that DBD is CPU bound and not GPU bound (who knows why ... Mom's Spaghetti?). So even if UE5 helps to utilize the GPU more efficiently, it probably won't help with the current DBD performance issues.
1 -
the issue is DBD,not the engine. lmao

I think console are dead anyway

Nanite. I suspect it would be very good for map performance.
The engine seems generally more powerful (which is why it allows such big scenes with high performance)
Moreover, migrating from UE4 to UE5 does not automatically enable Lumen.
1 -
Even if they do, it won't be a quick change at all, which is why I don't think they will unless it massively improves performance or something. Switching engines is a pretty massive task for any game.

But Epic coded UE4 and UE5, they have a lot more insight with both than any other developers, DBD is already super unstable and poorly optimized I doubt the switch to UE5 would be for the better, plus I suppose if you switch from UE4 to UE5 you have to pay a new license so I dont think many developers will be willing to switch their already coded games to a new engine (new games will probably release on it but wathever is done will remain on the same engine).

As a hobby game dev, changing engines during post-launch is not something that is physically possible. What you would be referring to is a sequel.
Of course, if someone can show me an example of a game that changed engines in post commercial launch, I would love to read about it and learn.
1 -
Hopefully never.
Engine updates usually mess the maps up. It happened before, around Legion's release.

good, it was supposed to hahahah >:)
Also what happened, how did this post suddenly get so much attention? i made this in april.
0 -
I see. That is a lot.
I guess it makes sense since the game isnt optimized very well and plays like a powerpoint.

I'm a day one Fortnite player, it gets worse and worse on PS4 with every new chapter and season. Most skins don't even load into the game -- 70% of a lobby is default Ramirez -- on old gen and Switch for performance reasons. It's like asking DBD to accommodate mkb on console, it has awful input lag on Fortnite. It would be even worse on DBD, as would switch to the UE5.
0 -
I'm not even an intermediate when it comes to game programming.
Is this even possible?
1 -
Considering how unstable DBD can be, I imagine that porting it over to unreal 5 will either mess up a few textures at best, or actually make the game fully unplayable for several weeks at worst
either way, older machines would just straight up not be able to play, which would suck big time

The license price doesn't change with the upgrade.
When you upgrade the engine, there is a conversion. Worst case scenario, some code needs to be adapted but it's never very different. It's not like if UE5 was an entirely new engine.
Changing engine, no. Upgrading the version, yes. They've done it in the past.
But was it because of an engine change, or just because they tend to mess-up a map or two after each new release?
It is, they've done it in the past.
It would be surprising. The engine doesn't suddenly becomes slower with upgrades. UE5 is a power-house. It can do way bigger scenes than its predecessors. It implies it potentially can do the same scenes faster.

UE5 is not a different version of UE4, it is a new engine. Like UE4 is not simply an upgraded UE3, it is a new engine.
You cannot use UE5 to open a project initially created in UE4. They are two different game engines.

Engine change.

Do you understand the incremental nature of the development of the engine?
There are a few major improvements but beside that it's the same. It's not like moving to Unity, Godot, Lumberyard ...
The C++ API has very little differences.
And of course you can open an UE4 project in UE5. That's the first step for the conversion of the data. I've done it on several projects.
When all is said and done ...
Take a good look at the C++ section.
You'll also note it wasn't possible between UE3 and UE4.

Not sure about the license thing, Tripwire used UE3 for their games because they won a permanent license in 2004, if there was no price tag they would have upgraded to UE4 when it launched yet they stuck to their free UE3 license until 2020.

It's pretty easy to verify:
and
These were the UE4 licence terms (for a while, I don't remember when it was updated last) as well as the UE5 ones.
A permanent license means to waive the fees, so the financial benefit is quite substantial.

As far as I read it (didnt read the the whole thing, only the parts about licensing), while it doesnt especifically say you get UE5 when you have UE4 (it just says the licensing models didnt change so you still have the same 3 options, Standard, Premium and Custom) I suppose they just need to renegotiate the deal as I suppose they are using a custom one (cant imagine a somewhat decent sized company with many projects using a free standard one), you may be right and maybe it doesnt cost much since both parties could accept same terms for a UE5 license.
0 -
The custom one is, indeed, custom.
When all is said and done I don't think the licencing is much of an issue here.
0 -
Yeah (and I do remember issues with sounds as well). And some maps are still too dark, some too bright, not consistent overall, even today.
0 -
Do you REALLY trust them to do that and not break the game in half and make it unplayable?
3 -
UE5 is a lot more graphically intensive then UE4, it will absolutely make the game tank on slower machines
a engine being capable of better graphics does not mean that every machine will be able to handle said graphics
1 -
It's not about the better graphics. These features have to be enabled.
But the better efficiency that allows faster rendering allows also faster rendering for lower settings.

thanks for informing me!
1 -
No they're not, I love playing on console
0 -
old gen I think he meant
0 -
I agree the UE5 editor became much faster when I went to the project settings and disabled every useless feature (lumen is useless for my use case which gave me MUCH faster editor)
so yeah the switch to UE5 wont drop old gen consoles but actually make them faster, granted that they disable heavy GPU crunching features like lumen
