about EAC
I got a question about the files and the custom icons that you can use in dbd.
So I know that if you use custom icons in game its done at your own risk and there are chances that you will get banned by EAC, but if you deleted the custom icons that you added are there any more chances that EAC will ban you for using them? I mean can they see the custom icons if you deleted them?

I ask this question because I am curious

I'm not sure if the forums are the best place to admit that you're changing game files, since DBD mods run the forums, but I'm not sure if you will get in trouble since they are just visual? Someone else correct me if I'm wrong though.

Devs said the don't have a problem with custom icons
1 -
To expand on it, they said they themselves won't ban or check for it, but if EAC for whatever reason gets triggered from it (which it shouldn't since they don't check the icons folder I believe, but maybe it does a false positive for some reason) they won't unban you for it; you take it up with EAC.

If you delete your custom icons, replace them with the original ones or validate your files to get them replaced instead of just deleting them. I haven't been banned yet (touch wood) and I've been using them for a while.

You won't get banned for using custom icons, I've literally used them for years and thousands of hours. I only recently stopped using them because I want to contribute to nightlight and custom icons make it a pain to do so.
0 -
I really want to use them because they look cool, but I'm so scared of the tiny chance of my account being the one to get banned 😄
0 -
but does the chance of getting banned dissapear if you replace them with the original ones? Like you deleted what you added so isn't it the same thing as if you never used them?
0 -
Ive never heard of anyone getting banned for icons.
0 -
Wait do you have a youtube channel with 2.7k subscribers?
0 -
The odds of you getting banned for changing icons is pretty much 0. However, if for any reason you do get banned for it, BHVR wont unban you.
If they did start banning for it, then it would be logged and you'd be banned a little later, so you wouldnt know
0 -
what do you mean by that?
0 -
I only recently started using custom icons and there is no replacing of files anymore. All the folders in the Icons folder are empty save for a single placeholder. Deleting the files and leaving the folders empty returns all the Icons to default without the original files needing to be there.
0 -
But if you had them in the game files and you deleted them is there any chance of getting banned anymore?
0 -
this was the answer I needed, thank you
So the easy anti cheat system don't ban people for deleted files that you added only if you have them in the game files
0 -
If I used custom icons for a few months and them deleted them that means that I will instantly get banned in the future when EAC decides to ban people for this?
0 -
You are still worried about this? If you're so paranoid about it, maybe you shouldn't use them 😕
0 -
As of right now EAC doesn't check the icons folder for tampering and so you should be fine using them but it will always be a risk if EAC suddenly changes. I personally dislike EAC heavily because it's a shotty and flawed anti-cheat that will allow hundreds of cheaters to play the game but will ban people for false reasons. As for the devs and moderators though they don't care about custom icons and aren't looking to ban anyone for it at all.
0 -
I don't use them but I used them and I should have not, Until someone tells me that if I deleted them the risk of getting banned dissapears I will still be a bit scared
0 -
I know that if the easy anti cheat system updates and checks the UI files of the game people that use custom icons will probably for file modification get banned but if you delete the custom icons from the game files right before the easy anti cheat updates will you still be banned or you are good? I mean will they really ban thousands of people for something like this...

Any alteration of game files is done at your own risk. If EAC does trigger an automatic ban for these things, we will not be able to unban you.
2 -
Hello Mandy, thanks for your comment! but can you explain why the devs can't unban people banned by EAC? aren't the devs higher than EAC? I mean if they made the game why can't they unban people,i'ts their game not EAC's game.
0 -
It's a "won't" thing, not a physically unable to do. That is why we tell you that these things are done at your own risk...we do not promote altering game files in anyway.
2 -
I understand, thank you! btw the new chapter is amazing keep it up!

clear and simple response.
Stop messing with game files guys, regardless of your reasons.

Hello I've got a question, what do you do if you just wanted to test the custom icons let's say you played a match with them and then you completely removed them, can you still get banned? will you be good even if EAC decides to check UI files?
0 -
as they said, right? test at your own risk, it doesn't matter if you have or don't have modified ban at the time you get the ban
0 -
but how would they know you used them if you completely removed them? can they see deleted files or something?
0 -
you know as some other users reported, some bans might come in waves, basically when their modification was caught it was just reported somehow and they were banned later, even if at that time they didn't use the mods and stuff they had anymore. If you used stuff, and it was caught, you might get banned right away, or later, but nobody will take action to unban you for it.

is there anything I can do to not get banned? All I did was to use the custom perks and character portraits for like a month or two then I reinstalled the game like 4 times, completely reseted the game files and I verified the integrity of game files 3 times, If I will get banned is there any reason to play the game or to spend money on it anymore? How can EAC ban around 20,000 people for something that isn't cheating...
0 -
stop doing it, and hope for the best. You can't do anything to prevent or reverse a ban decision, but maybe you were lucky. Just don't do it in the future. Or do it but the risk and responsibility is yours entirely
0 -
I will never do it again, bro I had so much fun playing dbd before I heard that custom icons can result a ban in the future, now everytime I play I am scared that at some point I will get banned and all the hours, all the money that I have spend to buy dlc's and cosmetics will be gone.
0 -
Stop panicking, it will be fine, I didn't want to worry you. I just told you what I witnessed or heard over the years of playing the game. Of course no dev will come here and tell you, not to worry because they don't want to encourage people saying "just a little bit is okay". But you are probably safe now. Just it's never smart to mess with game files when it comes to online games, we can mod our single player games all we want :) Stay safe and enjoy the wonderful game. I'm sure you will be fine, if you don't mess with it anymore.
0 -
I quit using custom icons too, I just deleted them and verified my game files, it's not worth risking all of my cosmetics and DLCs going away since it was a lot of money and time.
0 -
thank you for your time spent to answer my stupid questions, I appreciate it! I will try to not worry too much anymore but still I will never forgive me for the mistake of using custom icons, I have learnt my lesson,I won't change the UI files of online games that use easy anti cheat anymore, I hope there are more people like you, have a nice day!
0 -
but if EAC decides to check UI files idk if they can now if you used something even if you deleted it you will be banned, I am scared of that too...

well after a while it's pointless to worry about it. it's not like it will happen weeks or months later. It will be alright. Technically your intentions were not harmful, but when something catches you, it doesn't care about intentions, it just verifies game files. Right now probably you would be fine since it's a new patch, and usually they wait for things to settle a bit because people signal all sort of things without knowing, from corrupted files because of the patch, hardware issues preventing proper update, lack of disk space. And it will be alright, you should stop worrying about it right now. It's a word of caution, not a threat, and you know what to be aware of. Not something to worry yourself to death with. You will be fine.
Most ban waves happened as I recall from hacking, usually they were banned collectively, like many accounts at once. Even if not at the moment they were hacking the game or using cheats. But modded game file if it would have been caught already, you would have been auto banned already. I'm almost 100% sure that you will be fine, just it's not worth to risk it in the future.
0 -
I don't think they're that in depth, they're not the police, they can't deep dive into your computer and search up past files.
0 -
Thank you, you are a smart man/woman.
0 -
idk what to say about that, that means that if someone plays with cheats one game and no one reports him he can just delete the cheats and he will be fine.
0 -
If no one reports him, then he's fine, that's how people cheat for years and get away with it, there has to be video evidence. if EAC doesn't pick it up then they're off the hook.

There were for example people banned in waves for modifying the files for legacy skins. Some people felt like they deserve those skins because they owned the game, but because this or that they didn't receive it. In any case, their best course of action would have been to open a ticket and explain the problem, not to do it themselves. So after some verification about when they unlocked the said skins and under dubious circumstances, they were all banned.
Now what you did is also modding the game so don't do it in the future, because it's risky. People were banned for example for FOV modifications, or simply for ultra wide screen mods they did in the past, because they were angry that the game didn't have proper ultra wide support.
Now you have to understand that EAC is not a perfect anti-cheat software, it mostly verifies third party programs you are consecutively running, and a bit of the game files. But if it didn't catch you right away as you started the game, probably you are safe now. People got away with far more. But just it's not work taking chances, and everything is perfectly fine now
See you in the game!

Man you are smarter than I thought ngl, I hope I get you as a teammate so I can give my life to the killer for you to escape
0 -
That's right. I'm just sorry for him now for working himself up so much. Decent players don't have to worry that much, he doesn't sound like a cheater, and I'm sure he will be careful in the future. I played many games for example Starcraft 2. I didn't even know using mouse macros is cheating and so many people got banned for it, but I heard about it and I removed the macros. Well I sucked at Starcraft before just as much as I sucked after the fact :)) it's not like I'm a great player. and people do make mistakes. And nothing happened right away, even if apparently cheated for having my mouse set to use complicated inputs.
I'm quite sure that people who get actually banned in the vast majority of cases are quite heavy offenders they just lie about "only trying it once", after they are banned. But I wouldn't know because it never happened to me, nor I actually know those people.
So who accidentaly made a mistake, and didn't do it again, and so far nothing happened, should stop worrying. They are not the actual target for most bans.

I tried it, hearing how shotty EAC actually is, I don't trust them. I deleted all my custom icons and verified my game files, never doing it again. I had custom icons for about 2 weeks, not a long time but that's long enough. Yeah he is working himself up over it, it's just a game after all and at least you're not gonna get hunted by the FBI for it. If we end up getting banned in the end, it's just a lesson learned.
1 -
well in the end they are not trying to ruin customers accounts because they hate their own players. So most bans happen for good reasons. Probably 80% of the people complaining about their bans on the forums are lying like there's no tomorrow about teh actual reasons they were banned for. But the devs will not tell us "how much is too much" just to not encourage anybody to do anything to mess with files, even if probably many light offenses were not acted upon most of the time. People do make mistakes. everyone knows that.
It's not like running across the street will get you a huge fine from cops every time. But don't test your luck.
Hell I was once caught by a cop for smoking in a park, and he wanted to fine me. This never happened, and I saw cops many times. I knew it's not nice or permitted from a 20 meter radius from playgrounds, but others were doing it also so.... Well anyway, it was a first. And... I ran away! lol But now I know that I can be fined indeed.

thanks for having time to answer all of my question my guy, Now I hope that I won't get banned for a mistake that I made a long time ago.

Omg the paranoia in this thread is so damn real. @Tsela, no, they don't ban anyone for custom icons. Stop spreading misinformation.
@Dennis1242 you can safely use custom icons. I've been using them since 2017 and I'm still fine. EAC does NOT check the icon folder. EAC said themselves that they don't ban for it, ask BHVR, BHVR said they won't ban for it, ask EAC.
Of course the mods can't just say "use them". That could be easily used against BHVR in case EAC decided to ban someone. But they won't. It's been the same for as long as this game existed, and there is 0 reason for EAC to verify a folder that contains files that don't alter the gameplay in a single way.

I really don't know what to believe, some people said you can get banned and some people said you can't

Custom icons have been in the game for at least 5 years. They are EXTREMELY popular, with even many BIG content creators having used/using them. Not a SINGLE person is known to have been banned for that.
If that was bannable, in 5 years, at least 1 person would've been banned.
