when did "clever" become an offensive word?
I was in a lobby that had a bill whos game tag was also bills exact whole name and i said "clever name" and clever was censored. Why? i also recall a year or so ago when i was playing and i said something to a bill player, the word Bill was also censored, at that time at least. why are innocuous words censored? makes it seem like we are being toxic to other people when we arent.

Literally the only thing you can say about the chat censor is that it does, in fact, censor words.
It works by roulette. Every word in a message has a 30% chance of being censored.

The chat censor basically prohibits any constructive discussion about what transpired during the game, leaving you no other option but to trashtalk your opponent or to insult them personally. Creative and racial slurs have a pretty good chance to make it past the censor, and the more you threaten your opponent and especially their mom's, the higher the chance that your comment will make it through.

If the game tag is the characters exact name it usually means they have anonymous mode on anyway

Their name wasn't William "Bill" Overbeck, they were just using anonymous mode.

Pretty good job so far, if i think about it, im starting to see what a good Company BHVR is. I was a fool thinking they were anything else than the other big names, but at least the penaltys are reduced so we can experience even more fun

i am not aware of what this is?

it's an option in, uh, the options menu. There's a bunch of name-hiding stuff on both sides (both to hide yours from the other players, from anyone who might be watching a stream, and to hide other players' names for similar reasons).

I once said "viel Glück" to someone, translating to "Good luck".
It was blurred. The entire thing. Just ##########.

You cant say the word Kill.
There are archives and dailies that say Kill in game, im pretty sure the mori says Kill and you are playing against a Killer.
However if you say kill you get censored. The filter makes no sense

oh no

"Vittorio" is censored too

Are you sure you didn't type "cleaver" by mistake?
I just typed "clever" and it did not get censored

it's because the community is so childish, that people tend to threaten each other in the chat
Online games are all like this
in league of legends it happens all the time
this other day a guy asked for my address and said he would come to kill me

My name is a bad word? SWEET!

Oh, what the system blocks has very little to do with stuff being offensive. Isn't "Myers", "Rancor" and some other stuff that are just straight up characters or parts of the game blocked?
My mild tinfoil theory is that the system associates people mentioning things that are part of the game in a negative way, assuming people won't type the name of a perk unless they're complaining about it or something? But that doesn't explain why I've seen lobbies where player A can say "rancor" just fine but player B gets bleeped out when typing it, that one really makes me think 🤔

Tada, BHVR chat filter at it's finest

Wait... actually?

Lol I was in a custom game once with friends and surprised them all with a tombstone Myers and typed "Evil has come to your little town" and the word Town got censored out.

Probably because Clever is actually Revelc backwards which in turn is an anagram for Elverc, which is likely an offensive word to refer to some minority. It's a very advanced censor IA

No, but the fact that it was plausible enough for you to consider it means it may as well.

This...is true, lol

Apparently phone is a bad word. Also fone. The E got censored in phon# as well. I can't even with these robots anymore

The censoring of the endgame chat is the most absurd thing DbD has.
BHVR, if you are reading this, please: make this censorship an OPTION that the player can turn on or off at will.

The censor is complete and total dogshit, this is true.
I've had it censor integral game mechanics, like perk names, character names, downs, kills, etc. many times. It makes communication in endgame chat almost impossible, when it decides to, which is about 30% of the time. Then you have to play charades, like "the thing that happens when the killer hits you and you fall on the floor", and then watch half of that sentence get censored for no reason too.
