FOMO strikes back

Aren't they seasonal though like the Halloween cosmetics? I was under that impression.
4 -
Guessing they'll return next year, like the Halloween ones.
3 -
Thanks, can't wait to buy the new outfits in a month for iri shards....
25 -
Being seasonal doesn't excuse #########. There is nothing special about those outfits justifying those scummy time frames.
2 -
I know it's ancient, but I've always loved that meme.
5 -
What I don't get is why you are so worked-up about this.
It's just skins. You want them, you get them. You don't want them, you don't. They have virtually no impact on gameplay.
If there is nothing special about them, even more reason not to care.
10 -
Nothing bad will happen if you don´t buy stuff.
2 -
Perhaps it has something to do with the whole "new outfits will now receive iri shard prices 4 weeks after release" announcement followed by "btw, new outfits will only be available for 4 weeks".
Many people probably saved iri shards since July or whenever they did the poll for these outfits, and now get slapped in the face with waiting another year.
5 -
I agree with this. I find it even easier to not buy these cosmetics when they use shady tactics like FOMO to try and get me to buy them.
5 -
Oh.
oh no.
i won’t be able to get Yun-Jin’s sweater with shards? I hate this.
3 -
"They have virtually no impact on game play" yet, people are more inclined to play certain characters if they have a nice cosmetic they care about.
That sentence was never true in DbD and in any other game.
2 -
It feels kind of entitled to me. (Just trying to understand)
I believe the intent is to be seasonal and ephemeral, which is part of the "magic" of celebrations.
2 -
You'll have 5 days to purchase with shards since Dec 1-Dec 29 is 4 weeks... That is unless they go back on their "after 4 weeks you can get original cosmetics for shards"
2 -
So.... Is Fomo the new rotative forum topic?
4 -
lmfao, this ws too funny💀
1 -
Good stuff is ageless.
2 -
Should be able to on the 29th of december. That's in 4 weeks and they will still be in the shop then.
This is assuming they don't make an exception or come up with a new rule or something.

It's just seasonal skins FOR NOW.
It these skins sell good enough, BHVR will release more and more time-limited skins.
Answer this: What do we have to gain from time limited skins as a community?
If the answer is "Nothing", it's not entitled to ask that these kind of things are removed
5 -
Wanting to be seasonal for the magic of celebrations? After six years?
I don't buy it.
6 -
So these outfits should be available for shards on 12/29, then? Not so much FOMO as instant gratification driving auric cell purchases, if that's the case.
Fine with me I guess, but funny we probably won't see nearly as many of the festive outfits in game until the essentially end of the holiday event, though.
2 -
People get their pine, Christmas log, eggnog, bacalao, panettone, cougnou, turkey, ... every year during December. That's what make them special.
And every year they are the same.
And every year it's the same old crap on TV with the same old songs.
2 -
I'm not saying that things only being available at a certain time doesn't add to the charm of a specific celebration, I'm just saying that it doesn't make sense for dbd.
This is not the first seasonal collection they published and the others are always available, so it just seems weird to me that after years they would decide to change this system just for more "magic". The old Christmas skins for example are still available (not that I want to encourage the Devs to change that), so if players want to buy Christmas stuff in June this time limited collection will not stop them. Also, when you bought the skins you can use them whenever you want, so players will see off-season skins ingame anyway.
Like others already said, I'm sure it is purely a selling tactic and it feels scummy to me, so just like the Jane skin, I'm not going to buy it.
2 -
There is no magic in those seasonal "rules". I know it's December but I can still search up and buy halloween stuff today if I wanted to.
None of those merchandise became illegal or unavailable to buy once October ended, it's just the advertising & marketing that has stopped.
... So why are we not allowed to buy those cosmetics whenever we want, instead of being pressured of doing so now?
4 -
Yeah, this is exactly the thing I don't like. When you say, "Good news everyone, the really good content will be free after four weeks" and then follow it up in a few months with "Unrelated news everyone, the really good content will only be available for four weeks," it kind of seems like you're trying to mislead people.
To me, it's not so much about whether the skins are free or cost money -- it's that it would have been easy to say, "We're switching to a new model where we have some limited-time skins that cost money and all-the-time skins that are free" but they deliberately didn't say that, and it's hard to think of a reason that doesn't seem manipulative.

Hey January 4th, my birthday 🎂
1 -
But...they don't, Mercy from Overwatch doesn't get 100% healing speed if you wear the pink skin, Claudette doesn't get 100% invisibility if she gets a bush cosmetic, it's all just personal choice, the skin is as important as you make it
2 -
4 weeks is a bit steep, I mean a whole month. Eh, that is a while, but it's still cool nonetheless that's the approach they wanna take.

Some people get really mad about digital clothes...
3 -
Lot of people in this thread not understanding that it's not about the cosmetics, but rather the methods used to sell them. FOMO is a method used to prey on one's anxieties, to manipulate someone into buying something, because if you don't buy it then you've just missed out. Hope you didn't want it because chances are you'll never see it again. This is the issue here, that they're engaging in a practice specifically used to manipulate vulnerable people into spending money.
4 -
The issue is more with BHVR going against what they said in the past for purely an anti-consumer gain. Issue of principle.
2 -
The old Christmas skins for example are still available (not that I want to encourage the Devs to change that), so if players want to buy Christmas stuff in June this time limited collection will not stop them
5 -
Nothing special... they're all literally holiday themed or winter themed wear. The PJs have always been released during the winter. The bundled up cosmetics weren't released in the middle of summer. The sweaters, Christmas themed cosmetics, holiday colored cosmetics were all released during the HOLIDAYS. You're not missing out on anything if you can't get them all this year. They will return DURING the holidays next year.
On a separate note, the only people I've run into wearing holiday stuff during spring/summer/fall have always went out of their way to try and troll or be toxic in a game. If you weren't buying these skins during those seasons before, why do you suddenly care now? And if you did buy some of these during those seasons before, how many times did you actually wear them? Enough to be this upset this? I highly doubt that.
I know I won't be able to buy every single one this year. And I don't care because I'll have the chance next year when I know I'd want to wear them.
1 -
No, being themed after the name of the collection doesn't make those cosmetics special.
Look at all other holiday-themed collection that aren't on yearly rotation.
2 -
Lol, take a look at Mime Feng and tell me that that skin screams HALLOWEEN
Or look at any "winter" skin that is simply a pajama, in some cases a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and tell me that has any right of being tied to an event

Winter in the Northern Hemisphere.*
The PJs are not specific to a holiday, they are just generic PJs. Using "it's winter" as an excuse excludes all the players that are in the Souther Hemisphere - it's summer for them and now a bunch of "winter" cosmetics will no longer be available when it is winter for them. They'll have to buy a "winter" cosmetic out of season - which apparently is only done to troll.

Yeah, I jinxed it.

Mandy says holiday cosmetics are exempt and will not be available for shards:
0 -
I saw that, my comment was made yesterday before she made hers today. I've commented on other posts that going back on their statement is not OK.
0 -
Don't worry, I'll one-up you:
At least next year we'll be able to buy event skins that were already available with shards.
Now watch BHVR pull the rug under my feet on this one

I've been seeing a surprising number of posts defending this kind of practice, while not really grasping what is actually happening with it. FOMO causes an irrational shift in prioritization by directly manipulating the availability of a purchase. This shift is something that your average person is able to maintain a rational perspective regarding, such as "i don't need it that much" or "I can wait for another chance later." The people it is designed to affect, are those with any form of impaired impulse control, or poor budgeting skills. There have been notorious GDC lectures outlining very specifically how to take advantage of these people and try to get as much money as possible out of them, with FOMO being one of the key methods. It is a known business practice that very specifically targets a vulnerable demographic.
Lets say you are faced with this situation, and have other more important obligations and are unable to make the purchase. A typical mind will think "oh well" and go without, but an affected person will start trying to readjust their budget to make it work, they may borrow money or even forgo financial obligations altogether as the need to commit to the purchase or lose out on it entirely outweighs their otherwise rational budgeting and prioritization. Its actually part of gambling addictions as well, as "the next bet can be the win that offsets all my losses" even after going into debt. It is a very real and well documented psychological effect.
The worst part is that, again, it has very minimal impact on most people. For many its not about losing the ability to purchase something like an ingame cosmetic, and they may not even see that as financially reasonable as it is. The problem is that it so very specifically preys on those who are vulnerable to the tactic, who are treated as whales (individuals who spend more than the average consumer, to make up for a lack of sales elsewhere) in the process.
Its an absolute shame how much this kind of practice is not only accepted, but even defended in the industry. There can literally be people bypassing anything from holiday gifts for loved ones to financial responsibilities such as paying their bills just to sell a few more ugly sweater model meshes and textures.

Notice that works when previously putted the prices on shards right now tge only skin u will get its the meg one.

Ah, sorry.
Well, if anyone else in this thread hadn't seen that statement, hopefully they'll see it now. It's BS, the outfits should at least be available for shards when they return next year. I hate this seasonal availability nonsense in general.
1 -
Same, it's bad enough they are doing FOMO but going back on their own statement only a few months later AND removing cosmetics from the shop to make time limited as well is terrible. I'm so disappointed in them for turning to such anti-consumer practices.
0 -
I'll remind you in a year.
0 -
Yes. I don't think "use a false sense of urgency to pressure people into buying something they might not otherwise want" is an ethical business strategy to begin with, but "especially pressure neurodivergent people by taking advantage of their disability" is even worse.
1 -
I mean unless You're like a mad outfit collector and you want them all I don't really see what the issue is.
It's actually quite nice to have cosmetics that won't be available forever. In a few years time you can flex with your limited edition pink jump suit that new players don't have.
Now if they offer something as limited edition and in a few years they sell it again then that's when things start getting a bit shady.
2 -
It's actually quite nice to have cosmetics that won't be available forever.
People complaining about legacy prestige cosmetics for YEARS prove you wrong.
0 -
Please do.
I hope the "Bhvr can do whatever they want with their game" people will complain at that time, but you can't expect much from that kind of mentality
