Just Faced A Comp Team - That Was...An Experience.
So, decide to play some killer this morning - long queues so MMR was a bit borked I'm guessing.
Get a trio, all extremely good with their comp stuff in their profiles. Like...hard to even get a single hit on them good, perfectly running loops, not falling for any mindgames, nailing gens out in minutes etc.
Now, most of the time I'd be up for it - just to see how I can do. But of course I went in on my Demo, with a very meme-y build and addons, mostly doing my 'no tunnel, no camp, 2 hook everyone then start killing because I brought a flan' thing.
Ended up getting 4 hooks - 2 of which were admittedly on the non comp player and one of which was a sneaky grab thanks to a snowman. Probably could have done a little better had I been on a killer I've played more of recently and a more meta build...and on a map that isn't a Garden of Joy offering.
They were rude as anything, sort of a wasted flan with how little BP everyone got, but it is what it is.
A few things to note though.
- This really does represent one of the core problems of DbD. I doubt I could have beaten them, but this was a game I lost at the selection screen.
- How I get matched up against a monster trio like this...I don't know. With how BM they were, it could be that they've smurfed their MMR down (there really should be a system to catch this) just to be butts, but I've played Demo perhaps five times in the last few months, 3 of which were losing games so it's not like that killer's MMR is super high. May just be a lobby dodge situation though, where they backfilled in.
- It's massively frustrating when you're queueing up on a silly build with an intention to have a chill game, and the other side is looking to...honestly, either stomp lowbies or sweat.
- This game is in serious need of a jerk fumigation.
- Players with Cyrillic names are a mood.

There are unwinnable games in DBD as killer, it is what it is. You rely on survivor mistakes to win.
4 medkits/toolboxes in the lobby or loading into Eyrie/Garden of Joy/Ormond? Your chances of winning are already quite low. The survivors have to be playing really bad.

I've had people lie about being in comp.
Not saying that's what happened here, but it's possible.
MMR probably just ######### up and put you in a match you shouldn't have been in, pair that with serious Survivors and a non-serious Killer and you have a recipe for a miserable experience.

No, definitely actual comp players, from...uh, let's say somewhere in Europe. Links to their team and footage in their profiles, as I saw post game. Probably can't get more specific as I've gotten into hot water with the mods before on this.
It wasn't the most miserable game I've ever had, and had some absolutely hilarious games today too - just finished up one on Pig where I got a ton of use out of snowmen XD.
This was probably an MMR fart, but with how they acted it also felt like it could be a smurf squad.
1 -
Could be a smurf squad but it's more likely MMR just didn't work. Some people are ######### and personally, ya know, I think they should be called out on it publicly but I can't change the rules here unfortunately.
4 -
The thing is, they wouldn't even have to smurf their MMR down because of how low the cap is. Even if you are high average-ish at 1300 MMR, you are still within matchmaking range of a comp squad with a 1600 softcap. You could conceivably go against the best teams in the world even if you only have slightly above average MMR.
Hard to say if they're an actual active team or not without naming names and breaking forum rules, but all I can is that inflated egos unfortunately come with the territory in that scene. The only thing that made it tolerable for me was sticking with my small circle of friends outside of scrims when we unfortunately had to interact with the rest of the scene.

Eh, it used to get to me but I've just gotten numb to it over the years. The devs want a stinky community it seems and it's not my place to change that.
Maybe? But most of the time (I'd say...4 games in 5) I'm up against people who I've got a decent shot at beating and who have a decent shot at beating me. Clearly something is working - because this was not how it was under ranks.
Of course, that 5th game is a doozy, but it's still not terrible overall.

A good chunk of comp players like to talk #########
The guys I know love to talk ######### in endgame chat, (ngl tho its pretty funny) but the games are never really sweaty. We usually do meme builds and just try to dick around
Ive also faced several comp teams, one of the more memorable matches were a mixture of Agony and Eternal. One of them was live at the time and they all dced. Reason? I was playing Trickster and knew how to look at a wall when picking some one up.
They werent playing sweaty, they were just trying to dick around and have a good time. But yknow I was playing Trickster, and Trickster = no fun so . yeah.

The chat tells me they are just brats venting their own frustrations in a game. They are as irrelevant as their words.
I rarely verse a team I can't do anything against. Getting them all (or even more that one) before the gens are done is a different story though.
If the survivors are trying to be annoying, I find it best to keep calm and out-troll them.
Yesterday I had a team that was planning the chase loops to locker-stun me while I was chasing another one : stun after stun after blind after stun. Thanks to their choreography, I couldn't get a hit. They probably expected me to get mad but I didn't. I ignored the hits like if they were nothing, I've even feigned to ignore the most "vocal" one.
I wasn't following their script and they've made one mistake.
I've fully taken advantage of it and they've all died.
It doesn't go always that well, but often enough.

An overwhelming majority of comp players are incredibly rude. Which is why they’re almost always an instant dodge for me.

An overwhelming majority of comp players are kids. It's easier to understand the behavior with that context. Adults generally don't have the time to put into DbD to get to that level. It takes an unholy amount of hours just to make it out of round 1 consistently in major tournaments. The Knightlights of the world are generally putting in 50+ hours per week in game.

I used to play "comp" with my friends. (e.g. tournament-style hyper sweaty games, because we were training for a tournament)
A good outcome for killer is two kills, and getting more than that is very, VERY hard. It was stressful and highly demoralizing, so I dropped out.

The more you know. Definitely explains a lot.
1 -
For sure.
If I were any older, no way could I have put in the time I have. Nor gotten to the skill level I'm at.
Definitely makes it seem less serious if you contextualize it as a couple of kids

How strange. In many comp scenes of other games, players under 18 are typically barred from entering. I figure since comp DbD is such a small community, they can't afford to block any players or they'll often run into situations where they don't have enough teams.
1 -
Yeah that sucks, esp for lovely chill demopuppy players
But keep in mind that, at least, killers can anticipate this kind of tough games during the lobby stage, and can either change their build/mindset or even dodge the lobby
This is not even possible for solos/duos facing the equivalent bullshit from the other side (e.g., comp blight/nurse with 3+ slowdowns - or any other OP builds - and strongest add-ons, with 99+% chance victory at the start of the game)
4 -
Shrug. If you want to go into that side of things, I see a ton of survivors/duos/trios dodging because there's a newer player in their lobby.
And while there are some toxic killers out there (I think I've run into all of them this week...'tis the season I guess) the vast majority of BM I see is from survivors.
0 -
Shrug too. If you want to go into that side of things, the most BM ever will - and will remain - the 4 man bleed-out while nodding for no reason.
This may be the reason why devs are thinking about the built-in unbreakable/mori mechanics (with 4-kills reward if killer manages to snowball)
1 -
I'd take a 4man bleed out any day over a 4man hide and seek squad abusing the item drop thing to never get AFK crows. At least the bleed out ends.
3 -
That's why some are able to hide so well. I didn't know that... It should be changed and AFK crows should spawn if you don't do gens or cleanse totems etc for 2 minutes.

Look I have been playing since August 2016, I currently have 6000 killer hours and I consider myself good with tricks and mind games that probably not even the average player has.
I have faced many players, from potatoes to good and competitive players, nobody, nobody can face competitive players because they are going to blow up games, you don't have time for anything, not even to reach 4 hooks and a chase takes a long time because of how poorly designed the maps are.
Right now being a killer is settling for hitting survivors a few times and doing a couple of hooks, that's the life of a killer, unless you're like them and start camping or tunneling, that already changes things and you can get to but you hang up, but I prefer not to talk about this game, it causes me...

I played this morning at an hour I'm usually not playing. Waited a long time for a match, and I got all red bar players from the middle east, where I don't live. It was a SWF 3 and not a fun match. They weren't as amazing as described above but there wasn't much to be done on my end as far as competition goes. My point being, the match making system makes some strange decisions when the wait time gets long.

It was actually a problem for us when we tried to find new players. We were probably the oldest team and didn't want to deal with 16 year olds (no offense to anyone), plus we couldn't pay them if they didn't have a pay-pal/venmo account. Part of why we called it quits. It was insanely hard to find comp players over 21 who could also be main roster.
I think it's a couple things. There's no ranked mode, so the usual competitive crowd isn't really attracted to the game. That leads to a smaller comp scene with really small prize pools. I think the top players have earned around $10k lifetime and they account for 90% of the winnings. There's no money in it and there's no parity whatsoever. The same 20-25 players are always in the quarters and semis. It's exceedingly rare to see an upset. I think a lot of would-be players look at it and see the lack of money, massive time commitment, and the same teams winning every time.

MMR still prioritizes queue times over ratings. If there are a group of players that have been waiting a long time for a match, then sadly someone is getting the short end of the stick, and unfortunately it was you in this case.
Some people just want to have fun and some people play this game like their life depended on it, which is why I think there should be a ranked and an unranked mode. It's also one of the reasons why I enjoy playing against the bots, because at least there I don't have to sweat my ass off, and no one's guaranteed to be toxic to each other.
2 -
Yup. Finally figured out how people were doing this. You can stall out games essentially forever.
1 -
I had some "comp"players yesterday vs. my Blight too. The result was the same. Toxicity in Endgamechat without end. You are trash, so bad etc.
Kids need a hobby. Im 35 years old, I dont waste my time to explain them what chill is 🤣

Ranked/Unranked is one of those things that sounds like a great idea, but it's an unmitigated disaster when you try them, unless it's something like HOTS, where it had no public matchmaking and strict rules.
I mean...I remember how this basically killed SC2 for me.
For two expansions, there had just been 'ranked' mode. But what would happen is that players would hit a 'sweaty' MMR where they had to endure stressful matches and, to have 'fun' games - they'd either say sod it and derank to Bronze or Silver league to roflstomp newbies. Or, they'd purchase a smurf account for this purpose. It was miserable, and at the worst of it, maybe a quarter of the matches you'd have anything below Diamond league would be against Diamond/Masters level smurfs.
Of course, they would defend this, saying 'well, it's Blizzard's fault for making their game unfun' or 'well, those new players can learn how to play or quit'.
And they did quit. In droves. Blizzard tried banning smurfs, but it was almost impossible to detect.
So they added an Unranked mode, where people could go and play chill.
Only, all this did was remove the need for smurf accounts completely. You'd have your ranked mode as high as you can get it, while also deliberately keeping your Unranked MMR ridiculously low. It eventually meant that, ironically, the only way to have a reasonable chance of a fair match for newbies was to go back to Ranked, because Unranked was wall to wall smurfs.
TL/DR: All that would happen in DbD would be comp players and people looking to crack skulls could go over there for easy meat.

There is no such thing as competitive dbd. Think about all of the restrictions that are in place just to try and create a fake sense of balance in order to make it an enjoyable viewing experience. And with all of that, the majority of a matches in comp still boil down to camping, tunneling, 3 genning, NOED and no way out (the very things people complain about in regular dbd games). Now put these teams in public matches with no restrictions and all it does is reveal that this game is not intended to be played like that for the most part. It’s best to just let the game end in 4-5 minutes and move on to a reasonable and more fun match.

There were a few mistakes here:
- You played vs a 3 man SWF (which shouldn't be your fault but thats how the game is)
- . The devs refuse to balance SWF. As soon as you activate SWF mode you get anywhere from 4-16+ free perks worth of information. The old meta of Unbreakable, DS, DH and IW only worked because they were in a SWF and were getting all the information through voice coms. Try it in solo play and watch how poorly it performs.
- The devs refuse to balance the game for "expert" players
- the people you played against were going out of their way to make the game toxic
- The devs have no real understanding after 6 years of how to make maps fair (they need to be about 9000m²) and they don't really know how to make fair loops.
The most fair thing they could do would be to make loops that bad players can loop 0-1 times before needing to use the pallet. And make the same loop at most allow no more than 3 loops (with no chaining) before the pallet needs to be used.
The problem with high level play vs 99% of the killer roster is that the survivor can loop a pallet many times, then take the vault and chain to a new tile and not use that pallet for a while either.

Shrug.
There's such a thing as competitive lawnmower racing. There's such a thing as competitive slapping.
If there's a thing, people will make it into a competition. Because people are weird.
1 -
Comp teams definitely do suck but luckily most just stick to scrims so they can reliably face good killers.

Are you sure you're talking about Blizzard and not Riot? Seriously, I've been playing LoL for two years and I've already seen a massive shift in the community. From people try-harding and sweating in norms and the only "alternative" game mode, because all Riot cares about is balancing the game around E-Sports while still expecting their casual player base, whom they're happy to leave in the dirt, to fund their "projects" by buying skins. It's just so infuriating.
