Survivor Activity Icons or Survivor Aura-Only Basekit Kindred? + Value of Survivor Activity Icons?

I'm curious what the community thinks.

What would provide more benefit to Solo Queue?

Survivor Activity Icons or Survivor Aura-Only Basekit Kindred?

I feel that a form of Basekit Kindred (Survivor Aura-Only) would be more beneficial because the members of your Solo Queue team would instantly know which member of the team is closest to the hook and which member is going for a rescue.

In fact, I'm curious how the community feels Survivor Activity Icons will benefit Solo Queue at all.

Teammates will be constantly on and off gens as the Killer circulates around the map, so those Icons will constantly change.

Periodically, you'll see that people are doing totems, in lockers, in chase, etc. But, you already know that anyway, so I'm unclear how Survivor Activity Icons will change anything.

What about avoiding a situation like Eruption incapacitation? (This effect will likely get nerfed in the near future anyways.) But, Solo Queue players already become aware that these perks are in play throughout the trial, and seeing, via an Icon, that someone is in chase isn't going to help anyone. It's not like everyone can just hop off gens until the teammate is down or out of chase; it's not practical.

What about hook rescues? I'm not seeing the benefit there either (as opposed to a form of Basekit Kindred). If a teammate is hooked and you know (via the Icons) that the 3 remaining members of the team are on gens, you still have no idea which one is closest to the hook, so, even if one teammate gets off the gen (presumably to go for the rescue) you have no way of knowing if they are the person closest to the hook, best suited to go for the rescue.

So, overall, as mentioned before, I'm unclear how Survivor Activity Icons will improve the Solo Queue experience.

Perhaps members of the community can explain the potential benefits...

I think the icons are good enough. The game doesn't really need to hand out aura reading and aura reading largely being tied to perks is fine.

The issue I see is that icons won't stop bad survivors or bad matchmaking from affecting matches.

Personally, I'd like to have some type of base Kindred. Don't write off the value of icons just yet though. Players that pay attention to them could get a lot of value. For example, somebody's hooked and the rest of us have gen icons. I see somebody get off gen, probably goin for hook. Now I see they're in chase. Means they got cut off by killer. If the 1st player doesn't immediately get unhooked, I know it's a failed rescue and I should go get em. That's just one example. It'll take more effort from survivors to get maximum potential out of the icons, but good players will get a ton of info from them throughout the match. Looking forward to it.

Yeah some kind of "Mini-Kindred" would be nice, I agree.

Lets wait till next week when the PTB-Patch Notes are getting released, shall we? (Should be next week)

Icons, maybe. Kindred still seems to not be effective for solo queue. I've been in games where Kindred still wasn't enough intel for my random teammates, or, they'd see the killers aura and hide on the other side of the map.

I suggested a week ago or so I think some sort of ping/communication wheel would help immensely for solo queue.

If I had to pick, I'd stick with icons. I can always just use Kindred (and I always do anyway). Icons provide info throughout the game as opposed to just when someone is hooked. If you mean basekit kindred that lasts the entire game, well then I'd definitely pick that. It'd be like a combination of kindred, bond, empathy, and open handed.

As someone playing mostly solo (rarely in a duo) I would take what I get, however, Ii I had to choose I would take icons showing throughout the game.

And let's be honest... There are enough times Kindred doesn't help at all. I had it a few times I died on second hook with Kindred on, Killer was clearly chasing someone of the other side of the map, while the other two were only standing around. I guess I am just low mmr, cause I die most of the time. And Vice versa. The hooked one had Kindred, I was on the other side doing a gen while the other one got chased and the third one,? Busy standing around...nearby...

Oh please, once icons are implemented permanent bond will be the next big thing to bridge the evergrowing chasm between "solo" and "swf".

You cant solve bad players being bad or hatch-vultures deliberately not helping you by throwing info at them.

No perks or HUD elements can replace the power of communication. Not a big fan of the basekit nonsense, just equip the perks and nerf SWFs with an action debuff for each surv in a SWFs. We could already have that. But no, they decided to go the complicated way by just buffing all survs. But guess what, SFWs will be still stronger. So i don't get it.

Basekit Kindred - hard no. It's a very strong perk that you see in HCS or comp squads - for a reason. Yes, it would be beneficial to solos, but it would also be very beneficial to SWFs. And that must be avoided.

I'm also not convinced that status icons will help solo queue all that much, because the problems I see when I play solo queue don't have much to do with knowing what other survivors are doing. The problems are:

    • People DCing or suiciding.
    • People going AFK.
    • Perk redundancy (3x COH, 3x Kindred)
    • People playing too aggressively - following the killer and trying to unhook in their face.
    • People playing too passively - spending most of the game hiding while two people are on their death hooks and they are at 0.
    • People trying to showboat after a pallet stun and going down.

The icons will help in basically one situation - nobody brought Kindred, and nobody going for the unhook because they think someone else is.

I'd also like for solos to be able to see each other's perks in pregame, to prevent redundancy.

However...you're never going to get solos to the same level of power as SWF - and you can't implement solo buffs that will also buff SWFs, otherwise we're right back to buffing killers again. Because, sadly, you cannot balance this game around solo queue.

This is another great idea that's been suggested umpteen times - pings and a radial message system. Absolutely no idea why BHVR aren't going with this.

People are allowed to speculate or talk about what they want to see.

Anyway, I'm hopeful the activity icons are a good first step. I think the most helpful one will be seeing that a teammate is currently in a chase. Seeing that survivors are working on gens will at least be comforting. Especially in situations where there is one gen left and you need to know if you should go for a save or not. If another survivor or two are actively repairing you can hop off and go for the save and those survivors will see you're off the gen but not in a chase so they have an idea that "oh ok, they're likely going for a save." Of course it's not perfect because you could be trying to sneakily avoid a killer checking out your gen, so with the icons in mind, it may sometimes be better to get into a chase sooner to signal to your teammates that someone needs to go for the unhook.

Hopefully people who can play the ptb give lots of feedback. I do think a lesser kindred base kit would very nice, but I understand if the devs don't want to go that road for balance reasons, or if they want to try other things first.

How would swf benefit from this system when they could just talk?

I don’t think it’ll change anything. The main problem with solo q isn’t information.

Granted, solo q is not always bad. I’ve gotten some really solid teams. But the main issue with solo q is the the disparity of teammates you can get. You get the teams that don’t touch gens despite you being in chase, icons will not fix this. The locker hoppers, icons will not fix this. The corner map self care’ers, icons will not fix this. The “gets grabbed off hook trying to unhook in front of the killer”, icons will not fix this. ETC ETC.

The fix to solo q I believe would be more accurate and defined MMR. Games should feel like a challenge, not a slaughter. I’ve got more hours than I care to admit, but I’ll sometimes get paired with survivors with a mere fraction and it shows.

My friend, I have never said no one is allowed to speculate or talk about this or that. I just replied MY opinion, that its better to wait ONE week to see what BHVR is doing this midchapter (in MY opinion are midchapters the important patches, not the Chapters).

Thats it. You are all free to discuss or speculate whatever u want, of course :-).

    Info icons give more.

You know your teammate is in chase so you have the courage to do Gen and feel safe. This info is so important in late game when everyone are injured and on death hook.

What do you think which team will do better: 4 good solos with basekit Kindred or 4 good SWFs with basekit Kindred on top?

  • not_Queef
    not_Queef Member Posts: 970

Well obviously the latter would do better but the gap between the two scenarios would be vastly reduced, which is the whole point of solo improvements.

The icons look completely useless and I don't know why anybody is excited about them.

  • HugTechLover
    HugTechLover Member Posts: 2,482

They’ve already explicitly stated basekit kindred will not be a thing.

They also said old OoO was totally fine, a month before they completely reworked the perk because of the community feedback.

I will not stop asking for basekit Kindred until it happens.

I would go with icons, I proposed this feature for 3 years and finally DEVs are implementing it, I'm exited. But whether action icons are going to be useful depends on how they implement them. Well, at least they are planning to add "being chased" icon for all survivors, that sounds good already.
