Your Opinion on FOMO

FOMO is a term I've been seeing going around the forums a lot lately. Fear of missing out, a term used to refer to limited time cosmetics. A marketing tactic to get people to buy or unlock cosmetics because they don't want to have missed out and potentially never get the chance to get them again, or at least not see them again for a long time. What's your opinion on FOMO?

Personally I fall into the "I dont care, its just cosmetics category" but where do the rest of you fall.

I find it a cheap and kind of a distasteful practice, but I do play Genshin Impact so the DbD's way of doing it is not the worst I have seen.

It's something that can cumulate in way bigger issues, it should be called out as much as other bugs and problems the game has.

I wouldn't say it's a "huge" issue, but it does use negative psychological manipulation to get people to make purchases now rather than later, even if it'd be better financially for the person to wait. Most things use psychological manipulation of some sort, like gamification and dopamine, but the difference between feeling good by doing something vs feeling bad if you don't do something is what makes me say FOMO is an unhealthy, unwanted, anti-consumer tactic.

(Physical products are different from digital products. Digital products have no overhead, don't take up shelf space, don't require materials to make each item, don't expire, etc. Digital items can be sold year round forever and ever: it costs the company nothing to do so, it gives the customer more options, and it doesn't prey on creating negative feelings in their loyal, paying playerbase.)

It's a predatory practice purely for greed where it isn't necessary; the game still makes money hand over fist through its various DLCs (Currently at $167.96 just buying all chapter DLCs, including bundles). If anything, they overcharge for cosmetics, a great majority costing more than the DLC. That they're now trying to pressure people into these purchases is disgusting

It's a unnecessary and predatory tactic that's only use is for greed. Trying to manipulate and pressure players into buying cosmetics now rather than later is just wrong.

Dead By Daylight is not the only game that does this. The idea behind limited cosmetics is to show that you are a “veteran” or “you were here for this event”.

In the end though, I doubt this is on their list of priorities (If it’s even on the list), because it makes them more money, and they are just in-game items that don’t affect your real life (As much I hate not having Legacy Claudette).
