1 of 2 things have happened to bhvr
- Theyre out of ideas, and genuinely dont know what to do around the current parameters of the game. Problem is the solution to this is entirely new game modes and goals, then you can base the killers / survivors around that. Its like they can only design killers around letters a and b, and the way the games designed it doesnt allow them to consider the rest of the alphabet
- This is going to be a MASSIVE / awesome anniversary event and theyre saving the big load for that.
I wonder if the game was next gen only and pcs ( so ssds only ) if the game could have new features and modes they cant do on a HDD. Imagine if for example the SSD allowed freddy to have a true dream world. Or a killer that makes each survivor see a different map / version of the map

I don't think it means they necessarily ARE out of ideas, they probably just couldn't execute a better idea with the time they had for this release. There were quite a few past releases were I feared they were running out of ideas, but then they came up much better ones on the following chapters. After the Legion (who looked like ordinary muggers and their power at the time was pretty much "run faster, vault through things and stab them until they fall") we got the Plague (whose power had its issues in design, but way better than Legion in every way). After Freddy's rework (so he could place traps like Hag, but they only hindered survivors like clown, and he would phase in and out of sight like Spirit but better, or he could trade his power for fake pallets, like Doctor but better?) we got Demogorgon and Oni. After Trickster, who's power originally was really bad (as if feeling like a worse Huntress wasn't bad enough), we got Nemesis and Pinhead, both with their issues in execution, but still far better power concepts.
I guess that, with the amount of killers with different powers already in a game with such a distinct gameplay, it gets harder to make a power that feels original, good, and fun to play at the same time every time., since they need a release every three months and some take more work and thought than others. But yeah, the Skull Merchant is really boring. All I can hope is that she gets buffs soon to make her power better and more fun too, skins to make her looks cooler and/or scarier and a tome to give her lore the depht it lacks right now.

I don't see how this chapter hints towards that. The core idea of Skull Merchant's power isn't exactly boring or a stale copy of other existing mechanics, it's just... undertuned.
Weak =/= boring and uninspired, which, typing that out makes me realise I really shouldn't have to say it lol

I’m genuinely with you on 2), I could be being too optimistic or naive - but I’m thinking they’ve knowingly released 2 under-whelming chapters back to back because they have something really good in the pipeline for the anniversary chapter. Something that’s going to make it look comparatively even better and make up for poor reception and sales of the previous ones.
Maybe the last couple chapters haven’t been as good as they hoped because their resources have maybe been diverted towards the anniversary chapter, especially as it’s looking like it’s going to be licensed.
Kind of like when you got to see a band play live and they purposefully have a bad support band so theres more hope for when the headliner comes out and seems way better haha.

or cough mabye this chapter was meant to be something else.... the power and animations and icons make it feel so

Knight then her and just send things out hope they get the survivors. Hers dont even move
Thats what I am thinking. However if the anniversary is meh too, this game could start a huge decline.

They really aren't that similar. Knight sends minions out to hassle survivors, Skull Merchant sets down surveillance traps to track where the survivors are. They both revolve around setting a separate object down, sure, but if that's the line then they're both stale copies of Trapper.

I suspect we are going to start seeing them slow down a bit. For context, we have 31 killers right now. That is quite a lot. Even games like LoL and DotA slowed down when they started nearing the triple digits, and those games are very complicated and get changed all the time. DBD hasn't really changed anything since it's inception, outside of releasing new stuff.
My guess is either, a big refresh on how the game is played (new secondary objectives/game modes etc.) Or they will start going back and heavily reworking (as in like, they are basically a completely new killer) older ones like trapper and myers that desperately need some help.
As it stands we get a new killer/survivor combo every 3 months. I wouldn't be surprised if this coming year, or the following one, we start to see a shift to only 2 killers per year for a bit.

I played the PTB last night on both sides.
Everything they added feels like a rush.
Visual on the new home is too clean, its way out of place for its map, the character accouterments in the map don't fit the character at all.
The story reads like an outline for a first draft of something else.
A survivor ability is broken.
The killer is counter intuitive to play.
Playing as her you are barraged with color, its so confusing.
That mori is so underwhelming and doesn't feature her primary selling point.
These all strike me as things that get worked out in development. So, I guess they just ran out of time for whatever reason and sent it on its way as is. I think they were baking something interesting, I hope they just decided to extend development into the PTB and will sell it as an alpha to be refined as we go.

Everything she inflicts on survivors is a mechanic that can already be done by other killers, just not by the same exact means. Exposed over time? Ghostface and Myers do it by looking at them, the Skull Merchant needs them to stay in an area, which is actually a worse version of it. Undetectable? Myers, Ghostface, Pig, Wraith, Onryo. Seeing survivor auras? Many perks can do that for any killer, others can already see survivor locations through killer instinct. The difference is that the Skull Merchant also tells the survivors when she sees them, which is bad.

Give me a werewolf! Simple execution: like the Oni, the person (in ragged clothes) gains power and turns into a wolf. In wolf mode they are quicker and have maybe a dash or pounce or who knows what.
There’s spider: shoots webs so like Huntress or Slinger, but webs maybe slow survivors down? Poison? I mean there’s lots to work with. Cocoons downed survivors like pyramid head can place in a cage.
Anyway my point is there are still plenty of horror creatures & monsters to do , and I think still more room for unique powers. They just have to think outside the box.
Im sick of humanoids. Dredge is like the only non humanoid. I want monsters!!!

Those are extremely broad mechanics, the idea that no other killer can do them or they'll be considered unoriginal is ludicrous.
Other killers can do any specific thing in her kit, sure, but that's not the bar.

They got blasted by Disney for letting so much information about their future Chapters leak, that Disney said, "Fine, we aren't giving you Predator if you can't even keep it secret!" I bet you any amount of money that's what happened. xD Pretty funny. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot.

They aren't out of ideas, they are obviously don't know how to properly balance the game but that's not something new.

I watched the behind the scenes video they posted and I say they are not out of ideas. I just think most are not receiving or understanding the concept in the idea behind this killer. They wanted to make a surveillance/info killer who uses technology to hunt down ppl. I pretty confident they nailed that ideal. Personally I like she a info killer, it's kinda refreshing to have a killer like that. I do think she needs buffs to make her more deadly but her core mechanic is a neat idea that I like. I'm willing to wait and see what they do going forward with her. Also her being a info killer means you don't really have to bring info perks. You instead free to bring more chase focus perks.

What's the point of a "new mechanic" if it's going to do exactly what was already done before, then? The only difference between what she does and whas Michael and Ghostface do is that her version is far more limited. They do it anywhere, she or the survivor needs to stay on an area she creates, but what they are trying to do is pretty much the same thing.

If you were to fairly analyse her kit and the value it's supposed to bring (for the purposes of this discussion we won't be focusing too much on the fact that she's weak) there is no possible way you would conclude that "what she does" is the same as Myers and Ghostface. Yes, there is an Exposed element to her kit, but more than two killers are allowed to use Exposed, that doesn't make her a boring copy.
There actually isn't really a killer that does what she does. The closest we have is Doctor, in that he's good at locating survivors, but Doctor doesn't utilise surveillance drones to do it so it's clearly still a unique power. We're at the point where a little repetition is actually okay, but Skull Merchant isn't repetitive.

My last gen Xbox1 came with a SSD, and they still couldn't get the frames to 60fps minimum. What makes you think their now 7yr old iffy coding could handle any of that. They couldn't even add a third Zom Zom for Nemmy without it tanking game performance on their own (presumably) bad-ass development PC's.
I think any of that would need a fresh coding, and that means DBD2.

yeah i dont understand the comparing, she is unique. and i hope they flesh her out more.

The closest thing to her is OG Freddy and I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention that yet.

Ngl, not having a licensed chapter last year for the anniversary reveal was a big let down. Hopefully they won’t make that mistake again. I’ve been playing for a long time - 5+ years, and this is the first time I can say I have no interest or hype in this chapter whatsoever. I have 500k shards saved up that I don’t use, and I will be using them to buy this chapter rather than use my money for the first time.
It’s also really grating on me that they decided to release 2 simultaneous survivors again. That’s just another survivor I’d have to prestige 3 that I have no interest in playing as just for the perks.
How a lot of the matches have been going lately, coupled with an uninspired chapter is, it’s making playing DBD seem more and more like a chore / work as opposed to fun. I’d happily lose a chapter each year out of the rotation if it affected the overall quality.

They are not short of ideas, conceptually the Skull Merchant is interesting. What they have shown though is how much they don't know their game, how stuck they are in the game they played 6 years ago. Releasing 1 killer, 2 survivors and 9 perks in this state means having no idea of the current parameters of the game, what works and what doesn't work and instead of correcting the many problems that exist, they try to ignore it .
