BHVR should take the L and delay the chapter indefinitely
It's now clear as day that this chapter was supposed to be Predator/Prey but for some reason they lost the license and had to rush a replacement reusing most of their assets.
I honestly think they should just cancel the chapter altogether and only release the maps/perks update until the next chapter (Anniversary). They will save a possible chapter failure and also keep the community happy (Not saying pretty much everybody is unhappy with the chapter, but I do believe canceling is more good than harm)
Save the sibling survivors for a future original chapter. Ditch the killer once and for all. She is gonna be played for a bit once the chapter is released but then she is probably gonna be one of the rarest killers in the game.
And I know I am talking to the wall here, but I digress.

This would also let them more on QoL which DbD has been in need of for years.
The Survivor Actions implementation has been the best thing since cross-play.

Yes, canceling the chapter means no need to tweak perks and the killer's powers, bug fixes, and new cosmetics.
More time to spend with other important stuff already in the game.
10 -
Will not happen.
3 -
Is it clear as day, though?
8 -
Killswitch chapter, introduce chapter called "game health" and nerf pig and dead hard.
4 -
If it's not then this chapter is clear as day plagiarism. Not to the point of legal issues but creativity, and that's another L
5 -
so is Trapper, Billy, Spirit and Legion as well then?
2 -
Trapper and Billy are intentional inspirations.
What about Spirit and Legion? They are just generic spirit/ghost and cult related killers to me.
0 -
Spirit is very much their own take on RIng/Ringu, which they eventually got
Legion is also blatantly inspired by Ghost Face, being the whole theme of the chapter is "anyone can be behind that mask"
4 -
hmm nah, Ringu and GF didn't invent those stuff
2 -
Predator didn't invent drones either
9 -
The whole claw thing and hunting people for sport are big clues, though. Plus the mori.
Spirit's just a take on an onryo in general. It'd be like saying any vampire is specifically a take on Dracula, even though it's a general type of monster of which there's a particularly famous example.
11 -
Every killer is a general take of some kind of horror trope. This conspiracy about the new chapter is so tired.

She doesnt necessarily hunt people for sport tho, she does it for financial gain.
As for Spirit you do have valid points, but it is pretty safe to say she does take inspiration from the movies.
1 -
Bingo!
1 -
The hunting and killing is definitely for sport, though. The financial gain is just target selection. After all, she knows how to do the financial takeover without murdering the opposition, she wants to murder the opposition.
Mmm, and almost any vampire would take inspiration somehow from a form of Dracula--it's pretty unavoidable, he's so heavily entwined with the idea. It doesn't mean that they'd be a version thereof, or that Spirit is a take on Sadako.

Good point, In my opinon if they release the chapter in date they plan to release it will be a terrible idea. The killer design just is not ready and the power design is just boring and talentless and the music is....... So well, I've already said what the devs must to do in discussion i started so maybe if someone of them read this comment or the discussion overthink please, you are going to lose very much money soon or later and community trust.

All that suggests is that BHVR committed too hard on this idea without actually soliciting sufficient feedback and testing first.
7 -
I mean, yeah, but that feels way more likely than what people are implying.
0 -
Nah, I don't believe it
4 -
As if drones were the only similarities
4 -
It's not that far fetched when you see how similar her face is to tricksters (reuse model) or the weird mori where the survivors stands there looking around as if they cant see the killer just to be impaled from behind by a claw hand.
Not saying it's TRUE with that and the whole inspiration look I can personally see it and the community have made far bigger leaps before lol. At least this one has similar parts that can make sense
3 -
How is her face similar to Tricksters? May I see that source?
0 -
"This character is one of the most complex in the whole roster"
Blatantly false.
The power is nothing more than a mobile version of starstruck on a timer with tracking and a simon says minigame attached to it. There is no skill ceiling, no learning curve outside of "where do i put the thing". Comparing Skull Merchant to Killers like Nurse, Blight, Wesker, Huntress is a huge disservice and I seriously hope nobody thinks that this mess of a power comes anywhere close to being "mechanically complex"
Also the secondary argument of "but the power has lots of things!!!". Making a needlessly complicated power does not make it deep and complex to use.
The radar could've easily been killer instinct. There is NO difference between killer instinct and pulling up an ipad to look at white dots.
6 -
The mori is literally in the movie too
2 -
you should be able to find a video on YouTube, not saying it's the same model but they are very similar.
I would tag the reddit post showing it but BHVR took it down, if you still cant find it I'll get a video for you but its gone 1am and I'm off bed lol.
But like I said they're just similar, I dont think it's a recycling I just mean this one makes far more sense than other tinfoil hat theories people do haha

The implementation and number of moving parts added is quite complex. The gameplay isn't.
The point of that tweet I understand--this isn't something BHVR shunted out at the last minute. They put a lot of work into it. The gameplay, however, is simplistic.
0 -
I don't think this was a rush job personally, that's what makes it worse
THIS is what bhvr considers a finished product, basically.
That's why I'm really disappointed by it.
I might've misinterpreted the 'mechanically complex' thing, I seriously hope they weren't saying this killer's gameplay is complex. Quite frankly, it is not.
5 -
Uhm. Couldn’t find much. But apparently this is supposed to tell me these eyes are similar?
Like?? Yes. Both are.. eyes? Congrats for noticing.. but those are definitely different models..
9 -
The one I saw it was a gif of Trickster's face and Skull merchants fully unmasked face overlayed over each other with a fade in from one to the other and there was little difference
I can't verify how factual it is though, so I'm not gonna say its legit but if it was a legit comparison they do look extremely similar in some aspects.
3 -
Yeah. No. Sorry. But.. looking at the face models directly next to each other. Nope, they are different models. What do people even get out of making this stuff up?
6 -
The gameplay could literally have been the Predator one
They would just change the 3d models
0 -
I found this, 1:00

I agree.
However, I think they can release the Survivors and the maps. The perks can be fixed in a short time, the Killer needs more time than they have.
They should wait until the Mid-Chapter and then re-release her there, see if she's better

I don't normally post here but as a fan of the Predator franchise who has watched all of the movies and played many of the games and even read some of the comics, I have no idea where people are getting the idea that the drones are confirmation that she was supposed to be a Predator.
I feel like I'm being gaslit right now and there's some major iconic moment I'm forgetting about.
Unless I'm forgetting something, Predators do not use drones. At least not in the way she uses them.
They don't use drones for tracking, they don't make stationary drones, they don't use drones as a source for their stealth.
Predators use some gadgets which return to their hands after being used, like the disc or the homing arrow. The one from Prey used three floating proximity mines which kind of operated like Skull Merchant's drones, but those were explosives. There was one in Predators who had a mechanical bird thing, but that doesn't work at all like Skull Merchant's drone.
To me the drones are the way in which she most breaks from the Predator. If they did lose the license, it would be because the IP holders looked at the drone power and thought BHVR had gone off the rails and was mishandling their IP.
Otherwise everyone saying Skull Merchant was totally supposed to be the Predator is like looking at Blight and being like "He was totally supposed to be Mr Hyde!"
Like he's clearly inspired by Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, but Blight is a unique take on that character, and Mr Hyde didn't slam into walls like a pinball.

I think this post can be summarized as follows. The killer is not on a level as pay 2 win license like Wesker, therefore it is a failure.
The expectations are way too high. Try learning the killer first. BHVR spent months releasing a new killer, the least you can do is spend time learning her.
3 -
If you think Wesker is pay to win you must be completely ignoring the other strong killers that are either free or can be purchased for free.
"Expectations are way too high"
Yeah we just had a lackluster chapter, the last thing we were hoping for was a second one in a row
8 -
If Trapper and Hillbilly were just "inspired by licenses" why can that not apply the same way here? Why is it that Skull Merchant has to be plagiarized while the other 2 are just "inspired?"
4 -
Drones, wrist blade, and that they mention "Apex Predator" in the Behind the Scenes video.
That all Predator is? Because as some one who doesnt know much about the series, I at least know theres A LOT more to them
4 -
No problem in another inspired chapter. However, does that mean no chances for a Predator chapter in the future anymore?
They should have kept the ideas in the vault for Predator
1 -
No thanks
0 -
I mean, we did get Billy's inspiration, so it's not like having the original show up if there's something inspired by it.
And if the copy is crappy, at least it would spare the original that particular indignity.
0 -
While wristblades are a fairly iconic weapon to the Predator, they're not the only weapons the Predator has used, and they also haven't shown any hesitance about doubling up on weapon types.
And... the weapon is about where the similarities between her and the Predator end, mechanically speaking.
Wraith has more in common with the Predator, mechanically, than she does.
A Predator character would likely incorporate invisibility somehow. Or a lock-on mechanic. Like say being out in the open against the Predator allows them to lock on to you with their laser sight and then fire their shoulder cannon, or perhaps the homing arrow from Prey. That would make the counterplay to try to break line of sight with him as much as possible, similar to Nurse.
A Predator character would not involve tracking drones, that doesn't make any sense, it's not from any of the movies.
2 -
Have you seen what they gave Freddy?
0 -
I mean original Freddy was much closer to the movies than live Freddy, but the inaccuracy to the movies is one of the biggest criticisms of Freddy, no?
They at least tried to base him on the movies. Freddy's power over the environment in the dream world is represented by his ability to teleport and create illusions.
The drones literally aren't from anything in Predator.
0 -
You didn't check out the latest movie, "Prey," huh?
Drones that scan the environment are literally a major plot point of the predator's kit.
2 -
When? Again I feel like I'm being gaslit.
I just pulled up the movie again after you said this and scanned through it and didn't see him use anything of the sort.
He used a laser dot sight from his helmet to lock on to people like all of the other predators. His major weapon he used was a homing arrow which automatically sought out anything his helmet laser sights locked on to.
The only drone-like weapons he used were the homing arrow and the bombs.
Edit: https://avp.fandom.com/wiki/Feral_Predator#Equipment here's a full list of all of the equipment he uses in the movie, I don't see any environment-scanning drones on there.
3 -
I’ve seen multiple Alien v Predator movies where drone-like machines are used to scan an area ahead in non-lethal ways. Usually by humans but the Predators can and have read this information on their wrist machine thing. In AVP when first entering the temple for example.
I think this Predator chapter has been adapted enough to not be sued. There’s tonnes of other examples so if you watch Pauline esters video on YouTube it fills in a lot of gaps as well.
2 -
You're thinking of Prometheus, which is... like, related to the Alien franchise, which is often associated with the Predator franchise. Even in AVP they didn't use anything like the drones. The thing they look at in the beginning of AVP is a straight up layout of the facility, since it's a Predator temple.
Anyway, I've seen that video. She's very very obviously inspired by the Predator, but that doesn't mean she actually was a predator at some point. Like the wristblade, the theme of skulls, the triangle symbol on her documents, the fact they keep referring to her as "predatory" in the behind the scenes video, it's all quite obviously meant to point at what inspired the character.
The thing is that if they had to rush out a change, they picked the weirdest stuff to actually change. The UI element with the 3 dots would have been extremely easy for them to change. There's no reason for them to include the red triangle symbol at all. There was no need to have any mention of skulls in her name.
All of that is aesthetic.
Her power and character model, the stuff that would have taken the longest to change and adjust, have nothing to do with the Predator. Why would they turn an 8-foot-tall hulking alien into a normal-sized human woman instead of just adjusting the skeleton they built into a monster or something? And Predators never use their wrist computer to track people via a radar, or use drones to hunt in the way she does, it just doesn't make any sense for this character to have been a slap-dash attempt to have covered for a lost license.
I can believe that maybe they were in talks to get the Predator license, and it seemed like they were going to, but the deal fell through for whatever reason, but they'd already workshopped some ideas and decided to just use them to make an original character, instead. But that's the extent of what I can buy may have happened.
Also it's not like she prevents us from getting Predator because of how different she is. Like look at Legion and Ghost Face. Legion is obviously inspired by Ghost Face, but their power doesn't work at all like anything Ghost Face does in the Scream movies. We still got Ghost Face despite Legion being there, literally only 1 chapter after we got Legion, too. Meanwhile the actual Ghost Face does feel much closer to the Scream movies (despite not actually being a Scream license, but still, it's obvious they based him on the movies).
I wasn't around at the time, but I wonder if people were like "They were supposed to be Ghost Face!" when we got Legion, because they honestly have about as much in common with Ghost Face as Skull Merchant does with Predator.
