This Community Is Ruining What Joy I Have For This Game.
This has nothing to do with the onslaught of meta perks or "toxic" (not really toxic) builds or whatever the hell people on the forums complain about. This ENTIRELY has to do with the fact that the people Im being matchmaked with are very unpleasant individuals.
And I normally try to be insanely positive and even give the benefit-of-the-doubt but it has reached the point to where I have to actively speak out about this.
People who say awful things in post-game chat and commit literal crimes (DDOSing and DOXing) over petty things in the video game.
I know some people will say "just turn off your account comments on Steam and avoid post-game chat" but this extends beyond just the post-game chat. Ive had people go out of their way to find my social media pages to harass me there as well, or use alternative accounts to see when Im on DBD (on Steam) and DDOS me as soon as they notice I am playing. Literal cyber-stalking.
The worst part is, is that they use alternate accounts with this stuff, I cant even tell who it is that is doing this specifically, and reporting does nothing because they return with another account in a few days. It's gotten to the point to where I am considering on quitting the game entirely if it means I do not have the deal with this anymore.
It's gotten to the point to where I have no idea what to do.

This game definitely has the most hostile user base of any game I have ever played, and I used to play Dota a great deal.

The people in DbD that are like legit insane are much lower than in other games, imo. Sure, there's lots of delusional players that freak out over every little thing, but what you are experiencing is extremely rare.
It's very likely that what's going on is that you made a toxic streamer/content creator mad and they sent their fanbase after you. That sort of next-level out of game harassment is something you'd only see if someone with a large audience got triggered by something you did (probably something benign, like not unhooking them against a facecamping bubba).
Just my theory. Back when I played SUPER sweaty, I never got any kind of out of game or off-platform harassment despite getting hate and death threats on a near-daily basis (I'm an American, so that doesn't really scare me at all). It was all in end game chat or through messaging systems like Xbox or Steam.
It'll prolly die down after a while if you just stop paying attention to it.

idk what you guys are doing to get people mad at you, then. This game's community is sunshine and rainbow land compared to pretty much every other major multiplayer game.
1 -
Yh. I dont have access to endgame chat but my interactions with opponents via DMs have usually been positive.
Did have one situation like OP described where the ragey surv I sacrificed had a friend report me and send me a message saying I was going to get banned 🤣 never happened.
Still find communities for other games are much worse.
1 -
It really isn’t sunshine and rainbows. Maybe for you or is. 🤣

Steam is the worst platform for the game because others can check your profile. I think Epic is the superior one, also always use the anonymous mode, so they can't ever learn your identity.
0 -
Yeah once they learned your ID(your profile on steam), it won't help you.

This game is worse than any other game I've played, sans old CoD
1 -
See, that's just crazy to me. I think a lot of people here are just effected by recency bias.
You can pretty much pull any competitive multiplayer game out of your library, and you are guaranteed to NEVER get interactions like "ggs <3," "yeah that map with that killer is really hard, good luck next game", "you're so funny/cute, I'm glad we got to play together."
Hop on Ark, Rust, League of Legends, SMITE, DOTA, R6: Siege, Halo, Overwatch, hell even TF2 or L4D2 and you will be bombarded by screaming maniacs and toxic tryhards that are losing their mind over every little thing that goes wrong.
DbD is really chill compared to, like, every other competitive game out there. Are there bad experiences in DbD? Yeah, for sure. But it's so rare that I get maybe one toxic gamer every like, what, 20 games? 50 games?
The toxicity problem is blown completely out of proportion, because we're all forgetting just how horrible it is outside of sunshine land.
1 -
Toxicity got a ton worse when instead of community servers, game developers started using sbmm and their own servers to mash randoms together. Instead of finding a decent server with decent people that was well moderated and just playing there, you're forcibly teamed with and against the most depraved and deranged people out there.

🤷🏻♂️ remove your social media association?
kinda an obvious solution. maybe i'm just big brained her.
not that you should have to suffer or anything. it's not your fault the world is full of scumbags.
but if you know that they exist - which you should if you're an adult who isn't completely sheltered from reality - then you should have at least realized that there are certain levels of safety you have to take to protect yourself.
there's a reason why people carry stun guns and pepper spray when walking home from work or taking a train or bus.

I've put 3K hours into TF2 and probably a similar amount into CoD. 2K into Overwatch and Siege.
I've never been called the amount of slurs I have in DBD.
I've never had a streamer witch hunt me in any other game.
I've never had people DDoS me repeatedly outside of DBD.
I've never had people put me on a list and make a group specifically made to boot me off outside of DBD.
I've never met people who are so genuinely toxic ALL THE TIME outside of DBD.
It's not all bad. For all the bad, there are some real gems in the community and I'm lucky to have met them.

The issue is that this has been persistent for a really long time. I have already removed all association between my social media accounts and my Steam account but Im suck in a situation where the people harassing me already know it to begin with.
Another issue I would like to bring up is that some of these individuals are apart of groups that go out of their way to slander me outside of social media. As Ive said before, I have been DDOSed, but also DOXed, leading to my personal information along with slander being published on "free speech" forums in which I can only remove the slanderous claims by paying arbitration fees (which I cannot do it, nor will I do it). This however has stopped a few weeks ago, at least from what I can see.
They also found out that I am friends with smaller DBD streamers, and some of them have been using alternative accounts to use hacked clients to even stream snipe and harass me and my friends whenever we play DBD, which has lead to a situation where people have stop associating with me because they do not want to be harassed like I am. (Which thankfully BHVR has been taking action to deal with hacking since this has gone down a lot since.)
This entire issue just stems from pissing off the wrong individuals who have too much free time on their hands. It's a weird situation overall since I do not know many individuals who have had to deal with this, and I do know some of the pieces of information but not enough to exactly pinpoint who are the figures behind this.
My only idea as for "what do I do now?" has been to rebrand and change everything to move on from the situation. At the same time, I have spent countless hours building up to where I am now, which is why I am so unsure on what to do.

I think you are better off if stop playing dbd, it isnt worth to endure what you are enduring right now. Gaming is supposed to be fun and relaxing.
Also if you are really like the game, you might better start a new account but keep every detail secret and anonymous mode on from start, that way you will be safe.
Now that they have your ID, they can get you anytime you are playing

The only 2 exceptions I’ve seen is For Honor and the MVM community in TF2. Those 2 are genuinely worse from my experience
For honor players will hate you regardless of what hero you play, Hate you for doing 2v1s in a 4v4 mode and will use the emblem system for very hurtful images
The MVM community is mainly toxic due to its small size and how unwelcoming they are to new players. If you don’t play the exact meta strategies be prepared to get kicked but at the same time they literally had a black list created for players who used an overpowered weapon in a co-op gamemode (The gas passer)

I think you're just incredibly lucky so far
I've played LoL in the past too and while there are a lot of screaming maniacs there one push of the mute button fixes everything
Never in playing that game have i been DDoS'd, never has someone go out of their way to leave nasty messages on my profile, never has somebody told me to off myself.
DbD has become slightly better so if you're a newer player you might not have noticed much of it but it was waaaay worse then LoL before

Why and how r people getting ur social media. If it's just people cyber harassing because they salty and going to extreme lengths to do so, I wouldn't find that as a big deal. I personally would just keep blocking and ignoring. I get salt messages but not to your extreme. What r u doing to make people hate you bro?😭 If ur face camping or tunneling every match I think your solution is to not do that lmao
0 -
I would of laughed lmao. If man's going to that many lengths to kill u. Personally other people's toxicity fuel me to play.
0 -
I dont even camp or tunnel, and most of my matches I bring gimmicky and meme builds. I seriously have no idea who is doing this nor do I understand why they are doing this.
It also concerns me that I might not be the only person dealing with this as well, if they go to these lengths to harass me, surely Im not the only one, there are probably people before me that had to deal with this, and people who will deal with this once they move onto a new person to harass.

Yeah, I’m sure things are worse on PC but I’ve had my PlayStation settings changed years ago specifically to avoid DbD abuse. I’ve never experienced this amount of hate from a community but I’ve never really gamed anywhere except console so, it’s easier to deal with.
Just sucks I’m probably missing out on making friends from better gaming communities because I’m set up to shield myself from DbD harassment~

Like others have said, other games are much worse.
Go play Valorant for a week. 10x worse than anything I've seen in DbD. Dota, LoL or even OW/R6S are great examples too.
Yea, lots of disgusting and slimey people in this community, but they exist in every game that is marked as 'competitive' and strokes your ego.
Hope you have better interactions in the future though, that sucks to deal with.

That just blows my mind. Not saying you're making things up, I'm just astounded that our experiences are so wildly different.
I would get targeted/blacklisted in Halo for getting top score too often (I would get DDoS'd and kicked from the lobby often if people recognized me), and in a couple small games where I became known as a tryhard. So I know what it's like.
A lot of the toxic people in DbD are definitely full-time psychos tho. I've been in a lot of different circles in the many years I've been playing this game, and there's people that will completely lose their mind and call you evil if they find out you play a killer they don't like. Or just a casual conversation quickly devolves into some unhinged nonsensical rant or how they are in love with a fictional character.
I just chalk it up to "adult sized children" and move on. DbD is an absolutely massive game, consistently top 30 on Steam. Games with big playerbases will naturally have lots of insane people just due to the sheer number of people playing.

Well. First you can get a vpn. Which should prevent you from being ddossed. You’ll suffer some latency issues, but really… it should be minor if you’re not already dealing with it. The only way a person can ddos you is if they have access to your home network at the exact moment needed to throttle you. Because you can change your IP address. The only things you cant change are your MAC addresses. If you lock it behind a passcode, change the IP, and run a vpn getting ddossed shouldnt happen anymore. And if it does… well then you’ve got a data leak somewhere. Either during your stream or in your network.
secondly you can change your information. Idk how steam does it, but your gamertag on xbox can be changed. Contacting the support services and explaining the issue might allow you to change it for free. As for psn and behavior’s own username system… idk. But if you change your gamer name and change your account names and never give them out and then turn on streamer mode your name will not show up. It will just say “meg” or “nea” or “ace” or “hillbilly” or whatever. So your stream viewers wont be able to tell for sure what your username is. Then you add a 30 second to a minute delay. And that should keep people from being able to queue dodge into your lobby.
being a streamer is going to cause you to be doxed more likely than if you are just some random. Because you’re a mini celebrity if you have a decent following. That’s why you can’t be naive. You gotta start off protecting yourself and your online community.
and if you’re a controversial person or someone who speaks your mind or has uncommon beliefs and values… well that just paints a bigger target on your back the moment you bring that up in chat. Because twitch is accessed by almost the entire world.
one of the v-tubers i like was recently death threatened because there’s a cult of people that think anime and v-tubing is unnatural and should be condemned. So it’s really unfortunate. Especially with the fact that human trafficking, kidnaping, and “legal” enslavement being a real thing in several countries. Nothing unusual about her other than being a young cisgendered woman that v-tubes.
so… i mean… if a person is trans for example (and usually it’s more obvious than not) there’s basically an entire continent’s worth of people that will have that person executed. Don’t ask me why.
anyway - point is… if you’re one of the at risk communities then you need to take extra steps to protect yourself when you’re streaming. Because you’re putting yourself out there.

You don't have to do anything to these people. I got harassed for months because I hid in a locker to avoid the killer and didn't save the hooked survivor as fast as he wanted (he didn't even hit 2nd phase, lol). Some people need professional help.
