Mid Chapter changes and the weird way 'balance' issues are handled
Hello, I've been playing Dead by Daylight since Wesker came out, and I'm really worried that the game is going in a sweatier, more boring direction. I'm afraid that this update will only make playing the game more painful than it has to be, and I'll explain why. Before, I'll preface by saying I'm not a top level survivor or killer. When I play survivor, it's usually solo queue (or comms-less SWFs with nice randoms) with off meta builds. When I play killer, it's usually Pyramid Head with a rotating build of aura+COB or aura+rancor. I feel like these changes probably won't matter to comp teams, but will make the soloqueue experience and even potentially casual killer frustrating and tedious.
Pros
- The bloodweb changes are appreciated! I would prefer that the requirement to unlock the autocomplete be shifted so you only have to prestige one survivor and one killer once. The requirement to get a character to level one adds unnecessary tedium, especially as survivor when to be honest, they're basically skins with a few negligible differences.
- As sad as I'll be to not be able to heal mid chase anymore, it was a good change to make self healing less effective.
- I like the buffed main building in gas heaven! It was a bit too difficult to chain the two god windows in Garden of Joy, so making very strong loops easier to access is more than appreciated! :)
Cons
Sorry, but there's a lot I dislike.
- Call of brine and Pain Resonance were innocent bystanders, there was no need to kill them. Call of Brine's main issue came when it was paired with Overcharge, so I think having a cap on regression or making it so you can't get 400% regression for free. Pain Resonance was one of the healthier gen regression perks, and giving it the four token system is so absurd I don't understand why it's still a scourge hook. The only issue I could see with it is when killers use it to camp and hook trade, so perhaps in that case scourge hooks can re-randomize on every hook? It can potentially give better RNG and prevent that way of playing. As it stands, Pain Resonance fails as an 'anti-tunnel' perk because it's so bad killers won't run it and will tunnel regardless.
- The change to base altruistic healing is an L. Firstly, don't think anyone will enjoy having to hold M1 for 24 seconds (most likely more, because if this goes live sloppy will 100% be meta) to get a heal off. Secondly, it makes tunneling easier, because if you're killer there's a better chance that the survivors are not done healing by the time you walk back. Additionally, face camping has also received a buff.
- To explain the face camping buff, I'll just go through some hypothetical worse case scenario. One survivor on a hook, the other 3 injured. Since it takes longer to heal + travel to a hook, it'll be easier to confirm a second state. If the killer downs someone by the hook, it'll take about 45 seconds to fully recover. With a hook and a slug, that's pretty much a GGs for the hooked survivor. If the killer has pain resonance, that camp till death is the most that survivor is worth anyway.
- The medkits themselves are too similar and the gutting of the addons is pretty unnecessary as well. Since medkits are nearly identical with the same amount of changes, who cares if you have a purple or a brown? It'll take five years to heal regardless.
- Gas Heaven main building is overpowered now. :(
- I'm conflicted on the flashlight changes. I'm a bit biased since Wraith's stun sound is pretty funny, so I'd like to keep that in. Seriously speaking, flashlights being able to do niche things wasn't really gamebreaking and it encouraged people to not just hide in corners and do generators. I think the change also buffs tunneling for Wraith and maybe facecamping for hag as well. If you're tunneling as Wraith, the survivor's teammates can't do anything but maybe highlight you with their flashlight as you are significantly faster than them. Can't speak on hag because I don't play her, but it might be a lot easier for hag to protect a hooked survivor without the range flashlights give. I could be wrong, however.
- The Circle of Healing and Dead Hard nerfs were uninspired. One thing that annoys me about this game is that when something is good or used a lot, the developers 'balance' it by making it so terrible no one wants to use it anymore.
- The changes to Hillbilly are unnecessary and possibly proves my above point. Hillbilly has a lot of issues, overheat standing out as the shining star. Why is this still a mechanic? What was problematic about the engravings? That people liked using them? Drift billy and curve Billy got nerfed for no reasons besides some excel sheet and the mistaken idea that nerfing something into the ground will inspire Hillbilly players to use the other mediocre addons nobody uses.
- Desperate measures got an indirect nerf. L!
Changes that Should've been made (Killer FOV and Accessibility)
Instead of nerfing perks so bad it forces people to use other perks that will inevitably also get nerfed into the ground for being used too often, please change the FOV of the killer. As much fun I have playing killer, I can't play for an extended period of time because of the motion sickness it brings. I am not sure how many people share this problem, but the amount of spins + FOV techs eventually makes me leave the match with a hint of nausea. My issues are far less severe than some people who report to be unable to play killer because of the terrible FOV.
There is Shadowborn, yes, but consider the following:
- Accessibility features shouldn't be locked to a perk slot
- New players with motion sickness who don't want to play Wraith will be forced to grind a lot before being able to use it on every killer.
- Some killers (cough Hillbilly cough Nurse) have crazy camera shake that makes playing them a pain.
Sidenote: Hillbilly and Nurse
These killers stand out as the easiest killers to play when you want to give yourself a migraine. For the nurse, the problem is in her fatigue. Since you have to use her power if you want to navigate the map or hit a survivor, you also have to watch the camera get thrown around like you put it in a washing machine. I tried playing nurse against bots, and the constant shake (combined with how the screen slightly darkens) gave me an actual headache, not the light nausea I get from playing killer. Blight, in my opinion, is a fatigue done significantly better.
The hillbilly is punished for walking. There's these weird wobble that represents his limp when he's moving around. It's nice that his design is tied into his lore, but it's headache inducing, and extremely unnecessary. The survivors can feel free take notice of the hillbilly's limp, but I think most people would prefer a steady camera.
Changing FOV
I don't think Shadowborn should be basekit. Instead, in the accessibility options, there should be an FOV slider that isn't too insane but also isn't static like Shadowborn is. In this case, Monitor should probably also lose its FOV increase and maybe get a new effect, along with Shadowborn. I know some people may argue that the limited field of view is apart of the challenge of playing killer (and might argue that the extreme fatigue nurse gets is fair because of her power) but I'd argue that the challenge should come from my interactions with survivors, not from whatever is trying to exit my stomach as the camera does 17 backflips after I miss a blink as nurse.
In Conclusion + New Meta Prediction
These changes are pretty bad overall. I fear that new players will have a worse barrier to entry due to the severe changes and the indirect buffs to playstyles solo players struggle to coordinate to combat. I have already stopped wanting to play as much due to the new killer and the extremely boring games I've had versus her, but these changes would honestly be the nail in the coffin. I just want to relax, play some games, and try to change what I'm running to stay entertained. I'm not particularly interested in being pigeonholed into running healing perks so I can hold M1 for 3 minutes instead of 6. The gen regression being gutted is pretty unfortunate as well, I fully understand and support the gen kick builds getting nerfed, but it was too severe. I predict survivors will focus on rushing gens instead of healing if this update goes live, and I'm not very interested in the increased stress of playing killer in matches where survivors are more likely to play extremely safe. It just seems boring, and I'd rather invest my time and money in something else.
To conclude: improve killer FOV and buff desperate measures rn

I forgot to add my new meta predictions, whoops!
Survivor: Resilience, Prove Thyself, Adrenaline, Inner Healing ( I bet stealth perks will become more popular as well)
Killer: Deadlock, sloppy, Nurse's Calling, 4th perk
