AFK Survivor Etiquette
You're the killer and you come across a survivor that seems to be afk. What do you do? Leave em, injure, down, or show no mercy straight to the hook?
Comments

I leave them and go for the next person. If they're still AFK after that, they go on the hook. If a killer immediately downs and hooks an AFK player at the start, I assume that killer has no kids, pets, or general life responsibilities at home.
12 -
If they have AFK crows they go into hook, otherwise I leave them.

Since I am a jokester at heart, I will often mess around moonwalking in front of them or walking around them as though to "check" they are really afk, like survivors do when killers are afk. It amuses me ! =D
As I'm most often playing Legion, I'll usually start a frenzy chain using them or use them as a Frenzy pit-stop in other chains. If they are raised and healed then I can do it again. The deep wounds puts them on critical state, so they'll eventually be bleeding out if not raised by their teammates. That way they're not dying immediately and they're also useful. =)
That said, since I tend to play very soft, I'll usually go easy on teams that start with an afk teammate. Might even become a friendly game if the survivors are sufficiently clueless or willing to meme.
1 -
Kill everyone except them. Then hold the game as long as possible by camping hatch. If they come back and try to get hatch, close said hatch and proceed to slug them for the remainder of the match, until they bleed out.
Thats what I'd like to do in all honesty. But then again, I also don't care that much and while it sucks for the team, its also not my fault.
In reality, I'll just immediately hook them to gain some pressure and an advantage on the survivors. Aint wastin my time w/ that, lol.
1 -
They go on the hook.
It's what I'd expect if I were playing Survivor
18 -
slug
1 -
I watch their aura while i hang out on the hook
3 -
Exactly what I do.
They get the first hook as their price to pay for wasting my time and then I'll leave them alone until the explosion notifications start because that's now annoying me so back on you go. Repeat a third time if necessary if someone grabs them off in time.
Although I do love getting whiny messages about it. You not being ready to play is not my problem mate. Pay attention to your game next time.
5 -
just hang em who cares
4 -
You go on the hook.
If you get unhooked, and I come back and you are still there, standing idle under the hook, I'll leave you alone.
2 -
Slug them when I find them. If they have Crows (either after being slugged or when I find them) I hook them once.
If they are still AFK after the Unhook AND are getting Crows again, I just wait until I am too annoyed and hook them again. (Last thing highly depends on my mood, might be instantly when they have 3 Crows or after 5 minutes of them giving me AFK-Notifications)

Down and hook them.
- They chose to leave the game running. If there's a more serious issue they're dealing with, losing one game is the least of their worries.
- Allows me to farm a hook, and their team mates to farm an unhook +/- a heal, meaning they're still of use in the game.
I'll leave them alone for a while after the first unhook, giving them a chance to rejoin the game, but if it goes on for too long and it's more efficient for me to rehook them (e.g. I've chased/hooked other survivors and ended up back by the AFK survivor with no other survivor nearby) then I'll get them out of the game.
If their AFKness had a significant impact on the game, like the survivors haven't made any gen progress, I might ease off to give them a chance to catch up a little, but within reason so as not to just throw the game.

If its at the start of the game sometimes I give them a whack, but usually I move on. If I'm playing Myers I don't use my powers on them.
If the AFK happens later in the game I knock them down like normal.
If there is a player who never plays the match (AFK from start) I try to treat the same as I do a DC, I just let the survivors do the gens and leave, maybe get a couple of hooks in, but otherwise I won't eliminate any survivors.

Down them and hook them, let their teammates farm the points.
If they are continue to be AFK, I just kill them and meme with the other survivors.
2 -
I usually have them one slap so they have a visual and audio cue on their end.
If i encounter them again on my patrol i downed them and when the crow start they went on hook since the constant notifications got annoying.
Rinse and repeat if they got rescued, ignore until crows.

You are playing survivor and when you load in the killer is AFK. What do you do? Wait for them to move before doing any gens?
LMAO. No way. Survivors aren't expected not to do their objective if the killer is AFK.
You can certainly choose to be extra nice to AFK survivors and I take no issue with that whatsoever, but do not frame it as some kind of moral deficiency or lack of understanding/empathy for those who don't. It's a video game, and the expectation is that you queue for a game when you are free to play games. If you aren't, that's not the fault of your opponent(s).
I have 3 kids at home and I've had times when I'm playing killer that something unexpected happens requiring my immediate attention so I will either DC and drop a message in chat or will go AFK to take care of it. When I go AFK, I do not expect to come back to the same number of gens completed with survivors patiently awaiting my return.

I dont expect and dont wish any mercy on me if I was AFK. A player being AFK is their own responsibility, do not hit ready up if you arent actually ready.
As killer, I will hook them but go after the unhook-er if the player is still AFK by the time they return. I'm not about to hear the crow noise the entire match though.

Depends on what challenge I'm working on. Sacrifice challenge? Kill them quickly. Hook challenge? Hook them. Down survivors x times? Down and slug for team to get BP. Sometimes I'll carry them over to a teammate and drop them or hook them nearby, basically use them to farm points with the other survivors.
There was one time I was AFK because I left the room and my dog stepped on my controller and hit the button to search for a match. Came back to Oni hitting me out the exit. Not sure what they and my teammates did but I got a bunch of BP and somehow safety pipped or got a single pip (forget which but I know I was surprised it happened while AFK).

Honestly it really depends on what the challenge I'm currently working on is. If it is power related, hits, or hooks then I'm gonna take advantage of the situation. If not, then I guess it depends on my mood. I might leave them, slug them or hook them.

I used to leave them be, but I've learned better. Killers not hooking AFKers constantly tanks my survivor matches. Other survivors don't realize the person is AFK and then people die on the hook because the others think the person not on a gen is going for the save. Or other survivors get downed attempting to pick the slugged AFK survivor up. I really, really wish that when killers saw an AFK survivor, they'd hook them. I'm so tired of absolutely borked matches because someone is AFK, I see AFKers way too often.
As killer, if I see an AFK survivor, they go on a hook. The number of times I pull someone out of a locker with three idle crows and the survivor immediately starts struggling tells me that a lot of people with idle crows aren't dealing with a life emergency. If I'm feeling really friendly I'll use an AFKer to farm, but if they don't come back by the time 4 gens are done I'll probably kill them because I'm not amused by how many survivors return the exact moment the exit gates are powered. More than once an "AFK" survivor has DC'd when they realized they weren't getting a free escape at the end.
The HUD needs to show idle crows, if not with one then at least when someone gets two. Survivors really need the information that a teammate either isn't there or at least isn't participating.

I do almost the same. Crows are to annoying.
0 -
They get slugged and left until either someone else gets hooked, they twitch, or crows call us to hook them
0 -
If they're afk long enough to get crows, they're being hooked just to stop the crows. If they then come back to the game, I'll go out of my way to down and not hook them once to sort of equalise it.

Seen this a few times recently, I think the icons give it away some what too. Its bloody annoying when playing as survivor and the killer takes advantage of an afk completely. As killer myself, I ll injure or down them with Oni to get my power up and let the survivors get the heal unopposed. If they came back and saw that they were hooked, they'll probably end up D/C ing which spoils it for everyone so .....

So it depends on if i'm out to win or have fun. If I'm out to win, they go straight to the hook, and will keep going to the hook everytime I get a break between chases.
If I'm out for fun. I hook each survivor once then down the afker and take them on a tour of the map as I chase the other survivors with the afker over my shoulder. Sometimes I'll let them farm saves IA blinds or pallet drops. At the end I'll push them out the gate.

I just slug'em

I usually just slap them and move on to whoever i find next, if they are still AFK after a while i just hook them, its their fault.

Hook them. If they get saved and are back, I'll just let the game continue like normal. If they die, then they die and I'll let the other 3 go. Simple as that.

I think whatever the killer chooses is the right choice. Personally, I hook the survivor for the first hook and then down but don't hook once the player is unhooked. If the player ever returns, cool, if they don't then too bad.
Edit: I should add that I don't play like a tryhard for the remaining survivors. It's not their fault they got saddled with a bad team mate. I won't necessarily turn it into a farming game, but I'll let them get safe unhooks and heals and occasionally break chases.

You could use that same logic throughout the entire match. Someone goes afk mid-match? Could be any of those. Should we just leave them be? I'm more in the realm of, if you got things going on, it's best not to queue up. If things come up, it happens, but that type of scenario isn't limited to just the beginning of a match. If the match is live, it's go time.
I'll typically hook them, because that's on them putting their team at a disadvantage, but if they get unhooked and remain afk, I'll leave them there since I'll know once they are back from AFK (no more exploding crow notification)...plus it sucks if another survivor goes out of their way to risk themselves to unhook only to be facing an AFK. I'll typically leave the AFK hook area alone.

If it's the start of the game? Wait a second and then hit them and wait another. If they don't come back, they're fair game, but if I see another survivor after downing the afk person, I'll just slug the afk one to occupy the teams time instead of hooking an AFK person and go after the other survivor. If it's mid game, that completely depends on the current status of the match. The vast majority of people afk at match start are AFK because they forgot they even queued. Not because they suddenly had an emergency in the 10-20 seconds in the loading screen. And if you do? Hop in a locker.

dude just why

Straight on the hook. Preferably in a way that helps my challenge progress.
0 -
Straight to the meat hook
0 -
They get the Hook.... nobody likes afkers
1 -
I slug 'em. If they get crows after that, they get a hook.
Assuming they're unhooked, I really just repeat that until they're back, or they die.
0 -
I typically will down them but then leave them on the floor and hope they come back.
If they get crows (meaning I start getting spammed with notifs), then they’re going on the hook.
0 -
I just whack them. If I hear crows they go on a hook. Sometimes I let the others do gens and force them out for the laughs.
If I'm playing Myers though... 😈

Depends on my mood and challenge i have
Generaly just a injure untill crows come

AFK survivors are free real estate. Don't ready up when you're not ready, this is not a single player game!
0 -
So what will y’all do if after you hook them they tried to speed up the hook timer then jump off and become idle again? And like you see them clearly trying to throw the game.
0 -
I slug them. If they're not back by the time I get two hooks, I hook them.
0 -
If they want to go next, I am happy to help.
2 -
That’s fair. I wonder if some players will deliberately not let them go. I’ve seen survivors chasing killers who refuse to down them.
0 -
You go on hook my guy. I brought Lethal on a Killer without mobility, and it isn't my fault you aren't there. Your team needs to be mad at you also, so you feel bad enough that you won't let it happen again. I hate when my teammates do the same to me when I play Surv, so I don't go afk when I'm starting a match.
0 -
Things happen and someone has to go afk. No problem in that, we´re all humans and something unexpected can happen.
This can happen to survivors and killers. Expecting the killer to make an exception for afk survivors, is like expecting survivors to wait with repairing gens, when the killer is afk.
Does it ruin the game? Sure, but its hopefully only an exception and not the norm to go afk every match.
0 -
I usually down them and hook them once.
I expect the survivors to be ready when the match starts and will punish being afk. However if the person does not come back I let everybody else have it easy and take the time to practice with my power (trick shots as Slinger, flicks as Oni and so on) this helps me an generally makes for a good game for them too. I do not know if they notice that I play far less serious however I do.
Letting the other suffer for the afk mate feels bad, however I see no incentive to have mercy with the person going afk.

I usually slug them once and just move on, if I find them super early on. Especially if they're the very first person I see.
A lot of the time they come back and I guess it was just someone actually needing to be right back, in which case hey they weren't doing anything at the very start and someone usually had to pick them up. But if they're still gone after I've chased and hooked someone else or something, or they get 3 birds on them, they go on the hook when it's convenient to put them there.

I will hook them
0 -
If trying to pip, especially at high grades, I will hook them, I can't afford to play nice.
if not trying to pip, I hit them but then leave them.
