What's up with Limited-Time Cosmetics?

I'm not talking about stuff like the Holiday Sweaters you can only get around Christmas, I'm talking cosmetics where once they're gone, you can't get them again, ever.

When I started playing in 2018, I unlocked the Free Songbird shirt for Kate during the Summer BBQ event. It didn't look great, but felt special because it marked the time I started playing with a simple token for a Survivor I liked. Fast forward a year or so, BHVR had a little back and forth where they said they would, then wouldn't, then would release the event cosmetics to all players. I don't have a source, but I also felt like BHVR said somewhere that they wanted to move away from limited cosmetics. I was fine with all of this.

There were a bunch of crowns added at the various Anniversaries, which never returned. It made sense since they were themed around those particular events, and I was ok with this since they were each just a pretty basic halo to mark the occasions.

Later in 2022, BHVR announces the Deep Rift, special levels added onto the end of each Premium Rift Track with retextured and recoloured cosmetics that would never be available again. This was the point where I realised BHVR were gonna be intent on capitalising on FOMO. Other rifts did have limited items, but in the form of charms, which felt more fair and less like I was missing out on something unique for a character I liked.

It feels sucky for me, since what was special to me was given out to all players, and it seemed like BHVR was taking steps to make sure there were no more limited cosmetics (like with things from the rift returning to the shop after a year). And now they're clearly back. With the upcoming Tome, the limited Deep Rift stuff will also be more visually distinct instead of just recolours and retextures, meaning players could miss out on something very cool and unique. Wondering if anyone else has thoughts on this.

Whats up is Behaviour wants more Money.

They do limited time cosmetics to pressure people into buying them before time runs out. Taking advantage of and exploiting the fear of missing out to make some more money from the playerbase. I remember one of the mods said, in reply to a complaint of the Christmas seasonal timed cosmetics, "Just wait a whole year" (I am paraphrasing here but yeah)

With the overpriced legendries and limited time cosmetics, Behaviour do come across as greedy.

I don't see why limiting anniversary crowns is an issue. They mark a specific anniversary. What would be the point in buying the 2020 or 2021 crowns at this point? They're more similar to the legacy skins in a way, they mark a specific time in the game and are a way of displaying how long you've been playing.

Pretty sure they stated they made those cosmetics free for everyone was bc many people actually lost access and they couldn’t retrack who legitimately lost them and who just lied and wanted the cosmetics. They have since improved their system to be able to track stuff. Another reason was that specific code-cosmetics like golden Feng recolor was sold for abhorrent prices.

they never stated directly they were done with exclusive cosmetics, or have they? If so i would love to see the source!

I'm mostly going off of memory, I'm pretty sure BHVR stated somewhere years ago that they wanted to move away from limited cosmetics. This was reflected by bringing regular Rift cosmetics to the store after a while, which was unusual for a battle pass. I know it's a "trust me bro" moment, so I could be wrong but I've seen a bunch of people under the same impression.

Here is the article saying they found a way to "isolate the players that have played the event":

    https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/108882/release-information-3-4-0#latest

And here they went back on that, saying they no longer had a way to verify if they were earned legitimately. All players received the event cosmetics but not the legacy ones because they were more special:

Honestly, I agree. I wasn't really upset about the crowns which is why I didn't say anything then. They looked pretty silly after all. But with that being said I'd have preferred if limited items were restricted to being charms, especially now that crowns are being replaced with actual interesting cosmetics for select characters. The Deep Rift is my main concern, it feels like it was made purely to capitalise on FOMO.

Pretty sure this is their only statement regarding exclusive items and they even stated here:

Since then, we have reworked our storage system and item tracking and made sure that if a similar issue occurs, we should be able to easily restore items.

Which kinda implies they never planned to completely go away from exclusive cosmetics..

the rift cosmetics were announced to not be exclusive right before the first rift released, those were never planned to be fully exclusive cosmetics.

i think this is one of those moments where the community just blames the devs when they never even stated such thing. Not to say they never ‚lied‘ or didn’t hold a promise - that has happened often. But as far as I know, not in this case..

It's difficult to tell, this happened around a time when they did a lot more AMAs and livestreams, so it could have been said there. Regardless, I edited the post, my main point is I'm pretty disappointed that limited-time stuff in the Deep Rift is being added for what feels like purely FOMO reasons. Thanks for the comments!

I mean, I don't see why people hate the Rift so much. Like, I get that you don't want to buy 1000 Auric Cells maybe, but I have friends that bought those 1000 Auric Cells and have never purchased any more. Ever. They complete every Rift and get every Premium item, since BHVR refunds every Auric Cell you paid for the Rift if you complete it. I dont know of ANY other Premium Battle Pass that does that. They might have some premium currency on the paid track, but never enough to make then darn near free (if anything, you paid for the first one only.)

(Now, I am sure others will reply with other games that do a full refund too, but my point is that not all games do, and BHVR doesn't have to do so.)

I agree, Holiday cosmetics are acceptable, but the event outfits?! Why even if your just gonna to give it away?

the rift cosmetics were announced to not be exclusive right before the first rift released, those were never planned to be fully exclusive cosmetics.

Requesting a source for this please. I know about the website post / blog post where the Rift was announced, but that did not say that all items will return. It said most items will return (after a minimum of six months). And this post has (probably) been deleted (I can't find it anymore since the website update), so it's possible that this statement doesn't apply to any future Rift releases.

Here is a more recent forum post (more recent than the website post) by Mandy confirming the website statement, from December 2020 (full thread link here: https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/discussion/comment/1820213/, read for full context):

They do not say that all items will return. If you have a source contradicting that or a comment more recent than December 2020 please share it.

thats what I meant, they definitely never said that all items will return to the shop. Sorry wasn’t clear about it.
