Most ps4 dbd players I encounter have chat disabled...coincidence? I think not.

I mainly play on ps4, and as a killer main, though sometimes, when planets allign, I do play survivor. Now, every time I encounter another fellow ps4 player in the game I see the option to create a chat with them is disabled. At first I thought these were isolated cases, but they have multiplied as time went on. When I want to say "gg wp" to someone I find I cannot congratulate them, which is frustrating. I understand the dbd community can be...quite intense sometimes though. I even did this sometimes, until I realised it was doing more harm than helping. So now I just congratulate those who deserve so while just passing on the ones who earned a bit of criticism, as I understand they will evolve with time.

So, to all ps4 players around there that I have met or I have yet to meet, this message is for you: "gg, wp".

I have it disabled on my PS5. Nothing to do with DBD though - my nephews like to play Fortnight when they come over, and they're pretty intense about it. I'd rather not have to deal with whatever mess they've made once they've left.

I've played like 90% on PS4/PS5 in my time with DBD (3+ years), and my chat/messaging has been disabled almost the whole time. Sure, I've missed opportunities for positive contacts, but I never have to deal with any toxic, salty BS, which is liberating. It's just simpler to operate that way as a rule.

No fear of what I'm going to hear, or playing hopes of getting some kind of praise/validation.

So if anyone out there runs into me and I give no response or don't accept a friend request, it's not personal at all.

Also that way, I can assume the best of people and not have that ruined by unexpected (but predictable) post game BS.

I play primarily on my PS 5 and I dont have my messages turned off.

I have noticed a lot of killers on playstation who use what I would describe as "unfun & unpopular" tactics have them turned off for obvious reasons. 🤔

Yes, I also noticed that. Players that show a more toxic attitude on purpose have them turned off always.

I have like 200+ salty survivors blocked on PSN lmao

That I understand, but I mean now everybody has the option to start a chat unabled even if they are good players. It is frustrating to see that the community's attitude has caused this.

My messages are set to private. I've even had some people send a friend request just to fuss about something. I don't even accept dbd friend requests blindly anymore.

I think it's not a speific thing to DBD. Tbh, i hate that you can't engage with non playstation players and most playstation people have messaging turned off. I'd love to have chat across all platforms

I find trash talking on console hilarious.

How people remain heated, after all the time and effort required to type out a message, is beyond me. I'm all for banter, but I cannot understand how people don't just delete the message before they send it. Surely the time it took them to say what they want to say was enough for them to cool down.

The majority of messages I get are 'gg', though yesterday I did get called dogs**t for playing a little mean to get a 3k as Huntress (one of my worst Killers) after the survivors brought BNPs and a map offering that put me on Cowshed. My only regret is that I didn't tunnel and camp the map offering bringer harder, as he was the one who escaped :(

In my case I have mine disabled to avoid fishing messages. I had trouble with that sometime back. Hasn't seemed worth the risk to reopen my messages.

Disabled due to the amount of hate I was getting paying as killer. People get upset and ass hurt so easy.

Disabled for non friends since 2017. I don't want any arguments or salty messages because it doesn't matter.

Also Sony's ban system is stupid.

I turn it off when I play killer and turn it on when I play survivor. I just got so tired if getting rage messages from someone who was mad about how I played.

And I disagree about it being a significant portion of the community. I think it's just a few. They're just really loud.

I play A LOT of online games on Playstation, from Dark Souls to Minecrafts, and even MMOs like ESO and STO. The only gaming genres I don't get into significantly are battle royale shooters and sports games.

That being said, I have never had a single hate message from any of my PVP opponents in any game, EVER, except DbD. Every single PS4 DbD player that is upset seems to think that threatening your life or calling you racist terms is fun and funny. I got tired of wasting time reporting those idiotic people. Hence the blocking of ALL communication. BTW Sony isn't as limp wristed about this as BHVR. They will ban you almost immediately from all online games for one hate message, at least temporarily if not permanently. So don't do it!

Why do we have such a toxic community? The answer is the psychology of playing the role of a killer or a victim. For many it can lead to upset feelings of hatred and despair, to say the least. It is not the same as running around in GTA or invading in Dark Souls. Often the messages I would receive in DbD weren't from the players I beat in the game, but those who beat me. Sore winners abound in Dead by Daylight and it is disgusting.

My advice, just turn off all communication while playing DbD.

I'm on xbox and my chat is always open, because there is nothing more satisfying than a saltmine that is rage messages I get after matches, no matter what side i play.

A few is still a significant portion when you're at DBD's scale.

To the OP, gg and I hope you're having a great day :)

But yeah, I play on PC and I always leave the chat off. Sometimes I will get a GG, most of the time I just get survivors whining about being tunneled out (despite me usually getting my first kill around 7-8 hooks) and once in a blue moon, I will get people that seemed happy to have played with me.

The worst is when you play survivor and other survivors just say you suck and were a hindrance. Thanks for making me feel like playing the game was a mistake, always appreciate it. This will make me want to play survivor more for sure!

In the past people have been able to send messages through Playstation that would literally brick your console. I got such a message before but was able to avoid any issues by deleting it via the PlayStation app. That's not to mention your run of the mill toxicity. So I understand completely why people block any messages.

  • pigslittlepet
    pigslittlepet Member Posts: 483

The majority of people are just quietly playing the game and not being toxic or anything. There's just a small portion of people who are very loud. A few bad apples spoil the bunch.

If PS is anything like Xbox then I dont blame anyone for disabling messages. I've never encountered such vile trash talk coming from others players in all my years of gaming as I have done with Xbox players in DBD.

Oddly enough in the beginning, I thought it was just the DBD community as a whole due to my bad experience with console players for the first few years playing this game. I've now switched to PC and I hardly get any end game chat abuse. In fact I would say I get significantly more GGs, WP & positive comments than I get toxic end game chat on PC. 90% of PC SWFs will say GG. 70-80% of Xbox SWFs will send you PM abuse from all players in the team.

My conclusion is that it's actually console players that give this game a bad rep with toxicity & I'm glad they can't communicate with other platforms in end game chat.

No tarring everyone with the same brush but I would say 70-80% of console SWF teams I've encountered over the years are just utter scum bags that think it's okay to private message you abuse for literally no reason.

Question why do you feel entitled to say anything to anyone? I mean they are their to do w/e they are doing. Why should they have to talk to you? While I understand trying to be nice I for one don't know you nor do I care to know you. This isn't a mmo this is a 5 person party game were I may never see you again.

I play on PS4 primarily(PC too, on occasion). On PS4, some players may be minors and parental controls are set to disallow messaging, or allow it only for certain users, etc.

In my own case, I turned it off for anyone not on my friends list, specifically because of DBD. And I did that to stop getting hate messages....FROM FELLOW SURVIVORS. :) I can't recall a single instance where I got salt from a Killer after a match. Always fellow survivors, always salty or irate, and sometimes even abusive to the point of potential criminal threatening.

To illustrate---once after a match, I got salt from another Survivor, essentially for not playing his way(he felt that I should have dropped my gen and run fully across the map for a save, when I could see due to perks that there were two other Survivors closer to the hook than me who were doing nothing. Including him). I pointed his error out to him in a polite but matter-of-fact way. His response was 'Give me your addy, I'll come empty a clip into you IRL'. I responded, '666 Whoopingcough Lane, Nowhere, Alaska'. Reported, blocked, never heard another peep from him. And then I turned off messaging permanently.

I used to have my messages open, but then I started playing DBD so I had to disable them obviously
