I really like them too. Some of them are missed (Hi Demodoggy!) but overall I think they've got more character to them.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I gotta disagree on this one.
The current portraits are definitely more static but they have the reserved kind of look almost like mug shots, kinda depressing but that works for DBD. The concept of this game is rather bleak and it fits.
The new artwork while more dynamic is just a bit cheesy. Some are good and characterful but others are really not. i.e...
Deathslinger he looks like a kid firing a gun for the first time with that open mouth grin. Where's the grim countenance that defines his grizzled lawman persona.
Where's the tortured facial expression of the Onryo, the kind of expression that defines what she is... a tortured spirit. She looks like she's posing for an influencer shot, I expect to see her with some kind of beverage in her hand.
They updated the artwork but they lost the character. I agree with the assessment they feel more like fan art than official character portraits.

Me too! I think they have a lot more personality to them and the black is more aesthetically pleasing than the grainy brown old ones.

It's the goofiness that gives it a charm I like. This isn;t for everyone, I understand.
But DbD has long since passed its horror phase, and has now become more of a "action thriller" genre, so these stylized portraits just work for me personally in that regard.

Goofy and DBD don't really go together though.
It can only pass the horror stage if they move away from horror and the horror is the drawcard.
Whether people find it scary or not is irrelevant to the theme of the game. Most games aren't scary after a few plays but that doesn't mean they still can't be horror.
The prettier they try to make DBD the less horrible it becomes, but its the horrible that makes the game great.

I feel the same way! I think Trickster and Sadako need a lil tweak (Trickster should be a bit more on the center and Sadako maybe a bit zoomed out) but I like the new portraits

most of them look like thumbnails for "p100 nurse vs 50 win streak SWF" old ones are far superior. The only good ones are the ones that use older art, like haddies new one.
