I've only unlocked 1 killer in 83 hours of play and not even halfway towards the next one
This is so draining 😭 this game feels unbelievably f2p with the awful shard gain

With the size of the game now, in regards to the number of killers and survivors available, the shard system desperately needs an improvement.
27 -
Yep that its trash.
At least bhvr should have cheaper killers, if the killer have 1 or 2 years old 50% 3 years 75% off.
Same for survivors of course.
1 -
Are you really trying to unlock the killers with shards? That is commendable. I have more than 2k hours in the game and I think even I wouldn't be through, had I bought all original killers with shards. Nowadays I can do it because I already own all the killers and in 3 months I can easily get 9k shards.
But you are right that it shouldn't be this bad. We already pay for the game and unlocking stuff with shards just takes forever. I can understand that they don't want us to buy all original content with shards but this is getting a bit out of hand. Especially when you consider, that shards are used to unlock characters, cosmetics and even perks from the shrine.
1 -
Yeah, they pretty much want you to buy all the characters because grinding shards is a slow process and you get VERY little and they don't give them out for free often
1 -
I agree. Shrine is also need to be looked. Hopefully devs give some attention tho.
3 -
The
HuntressHag and theNurseDoctor (alongside with their respective survivors) should have a permanent price reduction since they are offered for free in any other version than Steam. Make them available for 3k iri shards instead.Post edited by BarnesFlam on1 -
A bit more than 2k hours could be enough. I bought every non-licensed-killer with shards, many survivor (some perks are from the shrine), some outfits (roughly 30k shards), have 50k shards left and i have 3k hours.

Indeed, I've brought this up in the past.
Every level is about 300 Shards. To gain a level, it takes about 7 games.
9000 Shards / 300 Shards Per Level = 30 levels
30 Levels * 7 Games Per Level = 210 games for a single character.
I seem to remember PC doesn't get Huntress, Hag, Doctor or Nurse for free.
So, if you play on PC you'd need about 8000 games to unlock everyone.
210 Games Per Level * 38 Unlockable Shard Characters = 7980 Games
For Console:
210 Games Per Level * 30 Unlockable Shard Characters = 6500 Games
So, on Console where there are less characters we'll do the math first.
6500 Games * 13 minutes (Average Trial Time) = 84500 Minutes Of Gameplay.
84,500 Minutes / 60 Minutes Per Hour = 1408 Hours of Gameplay
For PC:
7980 Games * 13 minutes (Average Trial Time) = 103,740 Minutes of Gameplay
103,740 Minutes / 60 Minutes Per Hour = 1729 Hours of Gameplay
So, yeah, Shard gain is rough and it's not realistic anymore. It was fine when there were 12 Killers, but we've got too many now. You are forced to fork over hundreds of dollars in DLC costs.
6 -
...Huntress and Nurse are free on Steam too, no?
6 -
Those are free DLCs
0 -
Huntress and Nurse are free on PC actually but Hag and Doctor are not.
1 -
It seems every aspect of the new player experience needs overhauling by now.
Be it Shard generation, the sheer number of perks, learning all 30+ killer powers, hundreds of add-ons, miles and miles of tome challenges, etc.
Looking back on it all it looks very daunting indeed.

Why should it be easy to get characters for free? It makes sense that it takes awhile to get paid content for free
4 -
It's 1500 hours.
That's way too many.
6 -
Because I paid for the game captain capitalism
7 -
Nobody is playing 1500 for a single character
2 -
Completely agree... Getting new characters when you are just starting is a nightmare.. It really shouldn't take THAT long...
1 -
It's like you didn't read my post.
1500 hours to unlock every character is egregious. Especially when you'd have to spend 100s of dollars to buy them otherwise.
3 -
for real.
just reduce like 1.5k for every year the character is in the game.
1 -
I can tell you right now you won't make much progress relying on shards to unlock stuff. I have 1200 hours so far and with this past anniversary I was able to get mostly all the killers unlocked except singularity. I payed for the majority of my killers, and survivors. The thing is. This game is p2w,but is a good p2w cause the dlc they go on sale like all the time most of the old dlc are like 3-4 dollars when there a sale. Personally I only unlock killers or survivors with shards on anniversary event cause the killers, and survivors are like 4.5k shards a lot cheaper. Game not much playable without spending a couple bucks, but like really who can't afford five dollars on a game they enjoy playing lol

Shard earning is slow, but its fine for me.
Its just older characters should be alot cheaper by now.
Currently its year 8, years 5 character should be dropped to 80%, years 4 60%, years 3 40%, years 2 and before 20%. Must be cheaper in real money too. Except license DLCs
3 -
That would help a lot.

I disagree. There's no reason to lower the killer's shard price when you have plenty with the base game and the base game is quite cheap now a days. You could always buy those killers you like first, it doesn't take that much time if you enjoy the game. If you don't enjoy the game as much as to put some hundred hours in it then why bother trying to get all characters?
New players could maybe have some kind of extra XP or Shards gain boost for a number of trials or something. Or maybe they could give every now and then a weekend-long free access to one killer, so people can get to play as different characters and decide whether they like them or not. But that's it.
DLC is not really expensive and they need to make profit, so I don't see why they would lower the shards requirement.
1 -
You gonna have to pay for some of them. Take that 25 dollars you was gonna use on a uber eats order and get a few killers my friend. Definitely worth it
The grind ridiculous which is why i just bought everything super early in. You not really suppose to unlock every thing with shards anyway.
4 -
i mean, i agree that the dlc are relatively cheap for what they provide, but they arent sub $4. They're £5.49 (US$7.02) for a usual 2 character DLC or £9.99 (US$12.77) for a 3 character one. And to some people, they just want to be able to play a game without needing to pump over £100 into DLC just to play the characters in it, which I think is fair- the Shard grind is egregious and very easy to burn out from.

That's only for killers though, isn't it? I'm pretty sure you're not gonna get all original survivors too in that time.
1 -
how would you know you like the killer before buying it? there's no way in game to try them out anymore.
and it's not like people don't get the wrong impression from just watching videos and stuff. you gotta play the character to really know.
and it does take that much time
1 -
Did you how there is a first match of the day bonus for each role?
Always play during the double XP events and when they do log in rewards they often include shards.
Earning higher emblems gets you a small boost.
The grind does suck and I wish the PC/console version had XP boosters like mobile.
Also, this isn't a free to play game and older DLC gets heavily discounted probably every 2 months
0 -
Killer packs are almost always on sale on playstation at like $4 a pack. Sometimes with bonus discounts applied its like $2.50 per pack. I have like 3k hours and the only killer I bought with shards was blight.
0 -
Unless you're doing some crazy experiment for YT content, it would be insane to grind it.
This thing will help:
There is a pack with killers/survivors, plus old DLCs are being selled for almost nothing, if not on steam, but on online shops. So the only financial impact could be only latest DLCs.
0 -
I don't know, I think 9k shards is pretty fair considering it's paid content. I have every original killer and survivor (plus a boatload of cosmetics) and never paid for a single one of them.
FOMO aside, this game's monetisation is pretty fair IMO.
0 -
Honestly just get the killer pass pack gives you a lot of the original killers
0 -
But it shouldn't really be paid content? The game cost money?
0 -
dlc costs money to make aswell
0 -
Yeah and they're constantly getting sales

I don't know the exact numbers on shards but i'm one of the people that generally buys everything with money on steam (the only except was the twins patch that i bought with shards in protest of how bad the PTB went). And i generally use 2000-4000 or so each shrine to get some extra bloodpoints and 16000 around the time of the new release (usually new releases happen with 1 day left of the shrine so i pop 8k right away for 600k points then a day later another 8k. And by the time the next release happens i get the 16k back.
I can say that you are supposed to gain 1 shard per minute of gameplay while alive based on the wiki up 10 minutes: https://deadbydaylight.fandom.com/wiki/Player_Level Then you earn 18xp for iri emblems, 12xp for gold, and 6xp for silver and you earn 300xp for "first game of the day" on each side. Someone mathed it out and figured that you earn around 0.0716 Iridescent Shards per Experience Point.
So based on that, for me, my lifetime earn of shards with almost devotion 12 is around 7,765,920 XP which at 0.0716 shards per experience point is probably around 556,039 shards from which feels pretty close. Which means i could buy 61.78 characters at 2800 hours which maths out to around 45 hours per character.

Yes, I don't know how but I confused them with Hag and Doctor. Oops.

I can still play this game with all the basic perks and still win, in which case I'd argue this game is not "p2w" since you can win from the get go with powerful perks, even at base level (Meg is basically the winning toolkit of perks). It's more about variety than anything else.
The game uses shards for both cosmetics, perks and non-licensed characters, which are relatively cheap already, with regular sales. I'm finding it hard to empathise with the idea of getting the latest, non-licensed products for free is somehow not free enough.

Ahh... thats why people say all the time that <500 hours is still newbie players and that the game starts at around 1500 hours. When you finally have played enough to unlock everything.
So motivating for new players! /s
For real, something needs to change. I wouldn´t start this grind as a new player and i doubt others would feel motivated to.

I would agree that the shard system needs an update for sure as it probably takes a bit to long. On the other hand you have to realize that this is a live service game. BHVR has to pay their employees everyday and pay for the likenesses of characters. Thats why i dont even bother with shards if i like the skin or the killer or survivor i just buy it. I enjoy the game and they need our financial support to keep the game going for the forseeable future.

Something being on sale when you don't have disposable income at the time of the sale means nothing.
Something being on sale cheaply in one region doesn't mean that same sale price translates to different regions.
This game lets people get things via an in game currency so it would be good if the grind to unlocking characters on both sides doing that didn't result in nearly a 3000 hour investment where you can never spend your shards on anything other than killers and survivors.
1 -
I love you for doing the math on this lol

happens to the best of us

Pretty brutal honestly when you are paying for the game to begin with... It'd be just fine if it was free to play in general, but it isn't so having a character purchase model like DBD currently has needs changing..

That's why at most, I think there should be free weekends from time to time, rotating the killer's available to try them out. Obviously this would leave licensed killers out of the action, but it could work. And why you make a valid point, I think there's enough info you can gather by playing against killers, watching vids and asking people to decide your preferences. It may not exactly the same as playing them for yourself but I think it can give you the necessary info to at least filter them.
0 -
Yes.
I mean, genuinely, how could you be an experienced killer player if you haven't even had the chance to BUY all the Killers, let alone master them.
Like you said, somethings gotta change. It's only gonna get worse.
0 -
Or test them.
Spend 210 matches to buy a killer you end up hating.
We need the offerings back, that allowed to test a killer. We need a daily rotation of the shrine of secrets (or replace the shrine with something else). We need ways to incentivize new players in trying the game. Not scare them away when they see the amount of killers/perks they need to unlock.

I assumed I would enjoy clown, hate the bastard. except for the laugh, the laugh almost makes him worth playing. and the elephant costume.
I assumed I would enjoy spirit, really don't.
I assumed slinger would be annoying/hard to play on console, love him.
I didn't expect to enjoy ghostface as much as I do. he's like my second favorite after trapper.
I assumed new freedy would be fun... I miss old freedy so much.
Haven't got them yet but I'm assuming I won't enjoy the singularity as much because of the pretty precise aiming it seems to require. but their design is so cool.
people will always have the wrong impression sometimes. you can't help it.
getting one of the original killers for free for a weekend seems like a really good idea. gets people to try them and want to buy them.
