How do people get into Killer?

Been playing this game for a while now probably too long lol but I mostly tend to dabble with surviour. I own all the dlc and wanted to try getting into killer for challenges and just to try out but I just can’t. I don’t normally get frustrated with games and especially don’t playing surviour but something about not being able to catch survivors at loops even with mind games isn’t exactly fun and maxing maybe 2-3 hooks just isn’t fun. I’m not saying want to win all the time nor expecting it I just wanna be able to at least somewhat get better at the role and clam myself down while playing it lol. Anyone got any maybe builds, killers or tips which would be useful for newer killers? As I said I’m not brand new to the game itself I know how must things work just new to the role itself

Playing survivor and playing killer are completely different. They both can help you get better at each role, but you have to have built some kind of experience first imo. Just treat playing killer as a brand new game separate from survivor now. Didn't you suck when you started playing survivor?

Simple. When I played killer the first time, I had fun.

Still lost miserably and using hag as my first killer was a terrible choice.

But I had fun. So I kept at it until I stopped being a potato.

I would do what pulsar said, pick a simple to understand killer and get the basics down. Then find a killer you like.

Demogorgon is also very simple if you have it. But don't think too hard with portals initially. Just put them down near important stuff.

ive mostly been playing wesker cause he practice he feels and plays simple enough. I know he has hug techs and other stuff like that but I’m nowhere near anything like that yet. I’m just stuck for builds cause I’ve tried chase builds and I get genrushed normally, then I try gen defence builds and just get genrushed slightly slower lol.

I did also have a little success with trapper but I think that was purely because the surviours weren’t really looking out for traps. I’ll give wraith a try though and see how it feels

Yeah I guess that was my fault for going into it expecting it to be similar to looping as surviour just on the opposite side lol. I do have very little experience, I’ve p1’d every killer but I normally just play them when they release get them to p1 and never really touch them again lol

    This is a sound approach.

I'd throw in Trapper here too. Very easy to understand his power, and his setup time will allow you get familiar with tiles, loops, high traffic areas, etc. Similar to Hag overall in the beginning, they both are decent at zoning and locking down parts of the map.

If you stick with it you'll develop a style of play & gain enough experience to then chose another stronger killer or two that fits you.

I wish I had demo he’s the only killer I don’t have lol. I think it started playing roughly just before wesker came out. I’m just struggling to bridge the gap of trying to keep going and not being frustrated about being a potato killer lol. It feels like a kick in the gut failing loops or mind games that killers I’ve played against would’ve done so easily. I do generally wanna get into the role though cause I’m a sucker for achievements and would definitely love having some of the killer ones cause I doubt I can get all of them lol

If you are starting out as killer then I recommend you pick a M1 killer first. M1 killers teach you a basic understanding of the killer role and are therefore perfectly suited to show you the ropes. Some good options are Wraith, Legion, Doctor and to a degree Myers.

All of them follow the basic gameplay loop of looking for survivor, chasing survivor, hooking survivor and repeat with a lot of decisions you'll have to make in all of these parts. If you have it unlocked, then I advise you use Lethal Pursuer to learn the survivors' spawns on different maps. It helps tremendously even when you start to get a grasp on it. BBQ is another great perk. It will help you get into your next chase quicker and reduce the time you waste looking for survivors. It can also teach you about basic survivor movements.

With M1 killers you will soon realise that most filler pallets cannot be mind gamed until they are dropped. And even once they are dropped you might want to get rid of them to stop the next survivor from using it against you. Mind games mostly come in play at loops where a survivor can't see you. There are a few exceptions of killers that utilise their power in mind games too but for the most part you cannot mind game a survivor that can see you as long as the loop is not super unsafe. To improve in chase you need to take risks and see what works.

This can sometimes mean committing to the best looper in the group to find out how you can outplay them. Especially while you are still learning, there really is no shame in throwing a game to try something out. There are some loops where you can never mind game a survivor as a M1 killer as long as they play good. Shack is one of these. They can see you everywhere and there is even a spot where they can simply wait for you and still make it through the window before you can hit them. In these situations it's best to brute force yourself through the loop until the pallet is gone / the window blocks.

I heavily advise you against going full meta right off the bat. It will help you win but it will also push you to play against survivors that you just aren't ready for yet and it deprives you of major learning opportunities. Even when you lose with only 3 hooks you can still learn something. Many killer mains have thousands of hours in this game and still learn new things.

Learning how to play killer is a lot of trial and error. You will try different tactics and eventually you will learn what works, what can work and what doesn't work. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself while playing. Even the best of us sometimes have trouble to compete. As long as you have fun that doesn't matter too much. Keep it up and you will be a good killer in no time.

Tip #1 The most important thing is to not take it too seriously. I was way too hungry for kills the first year I played this game. I was everything survivors hate. I was the most tunneling, face camping killer you could imagine. I didn't care about the survivor experience. I just wanted to kill everyone. Now, I really just don't care that much whether survivors live or die. Don't get me wrong. I still actively try to do my job as killer. But now I focus more on objectives. I generally don't camp (exception is when last gen is done). But I enjoy the game a lot more now.

Tip #2 It's a game. It should be fun. Try to find what is fun for you. Find your killer. Forget all the killer tiers. Which killer playstyle is the most fun for you? Focus on that. For example, I'm not a nurse or blight player. I don't have the internet connection or twitch skills to play them successfully. For me they are F tier killers. I will never be good with them. I fully accept that. I enjoy killers where I can play more of a "macro" game. For instance, Freddy and Sadako. I also enjoy doing meme type builds or just building around a certain theme. I also tend to like "one shot" killers like Michael or Ghostface.

Ghostie boy is a pretty fun starter killer, and he's pretty strong once you get good at him. You can also use his shroud to get rid of his stain if you don't know any red glow mindgames.

My number 1 most important lesson for 'newer' players is to remember it's a game and you're here to have fun. If you go into a match aware that you might playing against a very strong team and have little chance at winning, you can focus more on chases and trying out some mindgames/testing the killer's power. It takes away a lot of the frustration, and most high level survivors just want to get chased anyways so they likely won't mind.

Wesker is a little more complex than you think, his bigger TR means people will be prewarned and prerun/hide earlier from you, so you're being tested much more on your chase and search abilities than other killers.

I'm pretty new, and I started with playing the Pig cause I love SAW.

If you're getting gen rushed, you might find success with her. She is basic as basic can be for m1 killer's so great for learning fundamentals, and stealth is pretty effective at low MMR, but what she does have is natural slowdown in her kit.

Her headtraps naturally make the game take longer, so it gives you more time to get into and practise chases, and when you do start playing other Killers, the power shift will be noticeable. (Though Piggy is still top of my list).

Just remember the golden rule, of never chase someone with an active head trap (unless they literally give you a free hit).

Killer is about macro gameplay more than anything else. It takes a long time to really develop a strong sense of what's going on around you at all times and how you should respond to it. That's why there are so many people who think playing killer is impossible. You have to put in thousands of hours to truly become good at killer. There are also right and wrong ways to chase at different types of tiles. If you play a lot of both roles then you will notice when killers are playing a tile wrong. It's pretty easy to tell who knows what they're doing and who doesn't. Casual killer players never learn how to do any of this properly in my experience. I will also point out that build can carry HARD. You're probably going to get destroyed by good survivors if you don't bring strong perks.

tl;dr : there is a lot of nuance to playing killer that bad players don't realize exists. bring strong builds and play a lot.

Sometimes when you feel you know something it can be difficult to accept being a beginner at something that is related. And this would be true for also anyone returning after a 4-5 year break I assume, on any role. They'd have to be ok with "starting over". Because the game has changed a lot.

Wraith - Fearmonger, Jolt, Pain Res/Pop, Corrupt Intervention/Deadlock

Sloppy Butcher addon + Uncloak/Speed/break pallets faster addon

You don’t really need to camp or tunnel a lot because ideally you will be moving around the map getting rid of resources/spreading injuries.

There isn’t really a rule saying that you should start with an easier Killer. I started off maining Pinhead when I was learning Killer before branching off into other M1 Killers like Freddy, Sadako and Wraith, play whoever you want.

I think Legion is a great killer for survivor trying out killers for a few reasons:

    - Extremely easy power to use, you run fast and stab stuff.

    - Can vault

    - Have an in-built Killer Instinct to track survivors

    - Mostly M1 Killer.

Just find one you enjoy. If you can't find one then just don't worry about it (much as it sucks with all the dailies). I only like playing Demo or Wraith, and even then I have to be in the mood. My youngest likes watching me play killer more than survivor so usually she pesters me until I give in lol

Is it just me, or do we only see this kind of thread, when players go from survivor to killer, but never when killers go to survivor?

Like seriously. With the amount of threads complaining about OP killers, one would assume that switching from survivor to killer would be easy peasy lemon squeasy. But in reality its not. Playing killer can be overwhelming, because the killer has to juggle everything alone. If i fail as survivor, there is a chance that the rest of the team does its job to compensate. But if i fail as killer, its just over.

Thats also something where the sbmmr is failing hard.

Anyway, i´d say you should stick to Trapper for the meantime. Since you had some success with him. While Wesker is strong, he also has a higher skill floor than Trapper.

I few skills you will develop with more time and practice.

    - Know the location survivors should have spawn at the start of the game.

    - Know at any moment how advanced (more or less) should be any gen.

    - Know the time you can allow youself to spend in a chase before leave it.

    - Know where survs are going to go from the last time you see them.

    - Facecamp the Ace player is a must.

But yeah its just play, learn and practice.

Because when killers play survivor they admit they just wanna chill and don't care about winning/escaping. The opposite doesn't happen, no survivor will choose to play killer hoping to chill. They probably change to killer cause the survivor gameplay has gotten stale.
