How do I stop being bad?
I've had an 8-hour session of playing DBD, and in every single game:
- I've been found in the first 30 seconds, placed on a hook, and left to die by the other survivors, who made NO effort to even try and help me.
OR
- I've gone the entire round being unable to find a survivor before three generators are done. And if (NOT WHEN. IF) I manage to find someone, they lose me in milliseconds.
I'm sick of being seen as the worst player in DBD history.

I'm happy to give tips but first pick a side because honestly trying to learn both sides at the same time is not a good idea IMO.

Getting throw on hook is something you can help and I'll get back to that but your teamates not saving you is out of your control, unfortunately if it's that common for you I can only recommend finding a swf.
With killer it is on you to learn
I would recommend watching guides and videos for both sides to learn. Literally hours of it, unless you can't learn at all from watching.
Both sides have a lot of nuance that would take a while to figure out on your own but not difficult once you see it a few times.

Camp, tunnel, you can play nice or play to win.
As for Survivor, run Distortion. Keeps you from being found first, and naturally maybe play someone like Claudette or Adam instead of Jane of Yun-Jin. Darker = harder to see, some might take offense but it's just a fact. Slap on some dark clothes and watch Killers often walk right past you on darker maps.

1,000+ hours and my strongest piece of advice is keep playing. With survivor, a lot of the game is dependent on looping, which you get better at with time and practice. You learn the lunge ranges, the power details and all the nitty gritty. A couple how to loop guides don’t hurt. For killer? I recommend playing surv first and at least getting the basics down. You learn how they play, game sense is enough to carry you. Even with someone you’ve never played before. Knowing how survivors act and being able to make an educated guess will get you far. All in all it just takes time. And the number one most important rule is I pip, I win

For survivor, play ace. He has dark cosmetics and the quietest. Easy stealth.

Well, if your fellow survivors don't come to rescue you and the killer is not camping the hook, I recommend Kindred.
For killers, I first recommend playing one of the easier killers like Trapper of Wraith (Trapper has at least okay perks). If you trouble and don't know where people are, you could run Whisperers and check the furthest generators available (unless you are a set-up killer, than your first step should be trapping some stuff).
But overall, watching videos is also a grwat way to improve as survivor/killer. Just keep in mind that when a streamer/YouTuber/etc. says perk xy is good, it doesn't have to be the right one for you. You'll need to find out which perks you like and work for you and which ones doesn't. Anyway, have a nice day!
