I would 100% take that cat home with me if that happened. It obviously has chosen you to be it's human companion.

Put a bird video on for the kitties. Dante was barely interested, Darryl wanted to touch the birdies. 😂

My first customer at the camera bird feeder!
Also I bought a bird feeder camera!

very good news for this thread 😊

Unfortunately I can't get the video to upload anywhere but they're just quick little snippets of the bird sitting there so I figured the screenshot would work. I'll try to figure it out but I'm guessing all we'll get is these still frames unfortunately.
I put the bigger seed in there as I'm hoping that will get me a bigger mix of birds (The Cardinal Mix which is sunflower, cracked corn, safflower, millet, and peanut pieces as well as Golden Saffron, which is unshelled safflower).
It's been a while since I went to see my fellow blue hairs at the bird seed store! Maybe I'll swing in there and see if they have anything they'd recommend I put in there besides what I already have.

is that a catbird?? if not then i dont know
also this is very good news

Isn’t that a white breasted nuthatch?
Never even heard of catbirds though..
1 -
Oh yes! Right you are!
1 -
Occasionally that can happen with me 🫣
also I love nuthatches and the way walk up and down trees.

I signed up for the free trial of the "Bird Identifier" app. It seems to not work on former video unfortunately but hopefully this means I can post the bird and what kind it is as well if the app works like it says it does...

Weld him to another bird and make him bigger!

We have ourselves a "Golden Crown Sparrow" according to the app today
3 -
Looks to me more like a female house sparrow? Golden crowns should have a dominant golden/yellow spot on the top of their head… I think..
whatever they are, they look very content there
2 -
could be... but im kinda missing the eponymous crown
I think I agree with Mooks--looks like a female house sparrow to me.
Nevertheless, an excellent birb

I don't think where the camera is is doing these pictures any favors.
I just don't have anywhere that I think would work well for it. Anywhere pointed towards the street and the thing is constantly going off from cars. If I put it in the tree so it's pointed towards my house, I'm not gonna be able to refill it once winter comes.
I've considered putting it in my backyard but all that same food in it is available at the front bird feeder so I don't think any birds would go after it (and it has the same winter problems as the tree).
I don't know if a new spot would help the AI thing cause after looking at the gold crown fella, that seems very unlikely to be that kind of bird...

I think it’s alright, the picture is clear. Also I do like looking at birds and identifying them and some input from the app might definitely help at times.
Maybe you could even give feedback for the app so they can use that to improve it?

IDK, I am feeling very meh about this camera. Maybe I'm just bitter that the motion tracker really sucks (it's way too sensitive and you can't have it ignore things in the background). Or maybe I'm just cranky :D

orange cat behaviour

Eddie is an odd ball.
6 -
It's not their fault, they're orange! They're working with half the brain cells of a normal cat!
3 -
Eddie is pretty much a dog (he loves water and follows me everywhere), so that adds up 👨🎓

Understandable. We had a wildlife cam for nighttime and there was some disturbing stuff on there because of some leaves flying by and activating it (… I really hope it was leaves). Though iirc you could change at least the distance for the sensors..

Yeah, this one you can't set (I have a doorbell cam thing and you can tell it what "zone" to motion activate to so that I don't have it constantly going off from people on the sidewalk or cars on my street). Right now all I can do is look at the camera after the fact to see if it caught a bird or not as it goes off too often otherwise (yesterday it would have went off 67 times, Saturday 97 times but it only actually caught about three birds at the camera itself, the rest were the birds flying into their bush homes in the background).
It's $5 a month to have it do the bird ID thing so I'll give it the free trial month to see how well it actually works. Maybe it just swung and missed on this one and I just need to give it some more chances.
1 -
Oh yeah no I wouldn’t pay for it like that.
also, do you know what kinda noise it does on activation? Maybe some of the birds also activate it but immediately flee bc of the cam so it’s empty space? (That would be awful…)
1 -
It doesn't make any kind of noise (though it does have a mic so I can yell at the birds if I want!)
Right now I think the biggest problem it has is sight (I have that cardboard piece on the left side of it blocking the street but this would also block birds from seeing it) and it has the same food in it as the big feeders in the front yard. That's a big part of why I want to move it, I just need to figure out where that would make sense and be somewhere I can get to easily when winter has arrived and everything is filled with snow...
I'm starting to think my best bet might be to build something or repurpose one of the Shepard's Hooks I have and move it so that it's more in the front yard, which would then point it directly at my house rather than at the street. Right now it's kind of neat but the inability to watch it "Live" when birds land on it (since as stated, I get so many notifications on it that it isn't really practical to have it buzz at me) I think irks me more than I would have thought. Although if it's pointed at my house, I'll still have that same problem since I have giant bushes in front of my house for all these birds to live in.
This kind of food is eaten pretty slowly by birds so I may consider putting it against my shed or back porch where I can't really get to it in snow but could shovel to it once or twice in the year as snow melts if it needs refilling.

Woodpecker! (even I know this one!)
