DBD Hot Takes/Unpopular Opinions
I honestly want to hear some opinions from the community regarding the many things that span across DBD.
Dont like a perk, item, addon, or power/effect? Feel free to share it.
Dont like a playstyle? Feel free to share it.
Nothing is off the table (but obviously be respectful towards others as per usual).
To kind of get the ball rolling here, I got some Hot Takes to start things off:
Hot Take #1
- While having a character that defies the base rules of the game is something that a lot of people hate, specifically Nurse, I think Nurse's dated design still kind of fits into the game. I actually enjoy going against Nurse since their playstyle is different compared to other Killers and I often feel like people dont actually understand the strengths and weaknesses of Nurse since they just give up before giving it a chance.
Hot Take #2
- DBD's Beta/Alpha UI was far more interesting than the UI we have now in my opinion, all clips Ive seen has the UI surrounded by Entity Tendrils and I really like that it brings the Entity more into the world rather than just having it confined to the Trials.
Hot Take #3
- Darker maps are better in my opinion since they bring in new opportunities to use lighting to create unique visuals or draw your eyes to specifical focal points on the map, older DBD really capitalized on this compared to modern DBD and I wish the newer maps took better advantage of it; not to say that the new maps are bad, they are still very visually stunning and really well done in terms of art/design.
- I also just really liked the older maps having more muted colors followed by more exaggerated and expressive colors since it made each area feel gloomy but still have splashes of color that really popped out. It wasnt used too much but the areas that it was used had a really good effect, most notably the colored rooms of Gideon Meat Plant.

This is my really hot take.
Lets say average chase time is 45sec. While a chase can be between 80s because survivors have WoO, and 10s because survivors run into deathzone.
If everyone has WoO, the average chase time would be increased alot that far greater 45sec. Thats mean survivors will get nerfed or killers get buffed in general.
Weaker WoO should be basekit
Chasing time should be balanced between survivors who can chain titles well and killers able to mind game them. Not balancing around "hoping" survivors run into death zone.

My hot take:
Generators need a LOT more skill checks. Like, constant skill checks all the time
7 -
I wouldnt be opposed to this, this is just free Bloodpoints for less effort.
2 -
I really don't like Distortion on both sides.
As killer I don't like how it makes aura builds near useless and I often just don't run aura perks now because running one against someone with Distortion just makes it so I keep finding the survivors who don't have Distortion. I'm All Ears is a fun perk but I don't want to run it because Distortion just makes it a detriment to you.
As survivor I don't like how the survivor running Distortion is almost never going to be found and it means the killer is going to kill someone earlier as they can't find the person with Distortion.
Balance wise it's fine, and there's way more important stuff to address first, but I think it's design is pretty unhealthy.

1) Matchmaking accuracy should take priority over queue times.
2) The lobby should be deleted entirely. When 5 people are found, start the match. No more lobby shopping/checking profiles. (Not sure if hot-take, just wanted to post this.)
3) Charms are pointless and a waste of development time.
4) Lethal Pursuer ruins the pacing of the game by removing the early-game hide-and-seek phase.
20 -
Plague is the worst designed Killer in the game. Her mechanics take away from the core, not add to it, as Healing as a mechanic is essentially deleted outright. Her puking is annoying to hear, annoying to hit with, and provides far too many false positives. She is arguably one of the best 3-gen Killers in the game, as you can get 'free hits' by infecting the gens and running off. Cleansing is too often overused or underused, and you get lambasted in chat for doing either, like am I not supposed to cleanse against the camping Plague so I can unhook before I get downed? There is no built-in mechanic or perk to silence the puking while affected by it (but that is also a Nemmy problem). She has been bugged with PWYF for the longest time, in that puking and injuring a Survivor with green puke DOESN'T drop a PWYF stack, so she can only lose 1 stack normally, floating at max the entire game, making her effectively a 125/130 Killer if they know about that bug abuse.
(Second lesser opinion, Mori HUD removal should be an option, not forced.)

Same hot take I wrote last time:
Some tiles like killer shack are completely unfair for m1 killers and should be reworked to make counterplay possible.
3 -
Easy to play killers shouldn't be strong and hard to play killers shouldn't be weak
2 -
I would agree but rather something is easy or hard to play is really subjective.
Some people find Blight hard to play, but I find them easy. Meanwhile I find a Killer like Spirit hard to play (mainly because of a hearing impairment), but other people find them easy.
Balancing is not really a cut and dry thing and Ive learned that things are far more complicated than people make it out to be.
But if you dont mind me asking, would you like to provide a specific example of what you mean?
3 -
You'll never get real hot takes/unpopular opinions here because the mods will delete anything hotter than Taco Bell Mild Sauce.
9 -
It really isnt hard to put a hot take while being mindful and respectful of the people around you, I know sometimes people can get heated or overly passionate about certain topics though.
5 -
1) Old prestige system was much better.
Teachable perks auto transfer in Lv 1~3 is good but there was no need to increase max prestige level to 100.
Max level being 3 was totally fine unless you are some prestige icon lover.
No mention to say, this caused lobby dodging because of prestige levels.
2) Purchasing either character or DLC (which includes character) should auto-transfer the characters' teachable perks to every character.
Considering new players, I think this is necessary and wouldn't mind if all general perks T3 are given from the start.
1 -
Shack is fine, Shack next to a gym isnt fine.
8 -
1. As someone further up said remove lobbies & therefore all dodging on both sides just go to the offering screen at least on a test & see how mmr goes then!
2. Having played dbd on 6 platforms for over 6 years I've never ever found the dbd community to be remotely as toxic as others, whiney for sure (just look at the forums) but certainly not overly toxic!
3. If you can't win without camping / tunneling thats because you played that way to put yourself in an mmr above your skill level. This is NOT a judgement of how you play, play however you want but don't tunnel your way through win streaks to then complain survivors are too strong & tunnelling is the only thing you can do! At some point they'll just run you for half the game & you'll lose anyway.

From the new PTB patch notes, this is actually a bummer. I actually liked how Survivors started running in place when a Killer DC's...
1 -
I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but boil over is annoying and it basically only hampers the performance of players on console and anybody playing on controller. I don't think the perk is op or anything, I just personally hate it.
1 -
For m1 killers, shack is not fine.
A good survivor has all the time in the world and all the angles to see the killer coming.
This reduces an m1 killer to a bot that just brute forces the window until it is blocked and then hopefully gets the pallet out of the way.
This is not fun. As a m1 killer i have no chance to get a hit at that tile of the survivor plays it correctly.
A solution would be to close up the long side of the shack like it is on toba landing. That way the killer would have a chance at mind gaming the tile.

The DH perk, which inexperienced killer players whine about more and more every day, should not have been buried in the ground. DS shouldn't have been buried because of the whining killer players who didn't patrol the generators and always chased and focused on someone aka tunneling.
9 -
Is DH buried to ground? I am still using it well even after it's nerf.
2 -
My (apparently) hot take is that the game is killer sided on average
My other hot take is, that's a good thing and BHVR should work to make it even more killer sided, if only slightly so.
0 -
It's hard to decipher whether these are hot takes or just plain shitposting.
Freddy deserves every nerf he gets until the end of time (or DBD 2 releases, whichever comes first), including his recent bugfix.
MFT more like MidFuckinTrash (how is it that skilled killers have no issue closing distance or getting me down in seconds with this perk 🤔)
Now that we have Chucky (who is on record for having series called silly by a BHVR rep), FNAF will be around the corner
Add an option for survs to kick Chucky like Victor (Roll d20 to see if Chucky stabs them and takes a health state when they kick)
Make Ruin a regular perk and not a Hex
0 -
All of these are perfect! Charms are the worst. It's like when your job tells you if you meet a goal everyone will get a surprise and it turns out to be $5 gift cards.
3 -
Not sure if it's a hot take but i know some content creators don't share my oppinion in this.
The latest trend of having more and more effects that alter movement speed is a good thing
I can get where people are coming from not liking it but for me the idea that a survivor can go to a tile and know for certain they can make 3 rotations before dropping the pallet and the killer just has to go with it to get rid of that pallet is very dull.
That with movement speed perks/addons or whatever those number of rotations can change make the game more unpredictable and in turn more excitting.
Chase perks will also always be more fun then just make the game last longer perks
I think it mostly stems from certain movement speed stuff to be slightly overtuned and not situational enough to say the least is why people are against the idea but as a concept i personally think that's a good direction to go

I love the Survivor solo queue experience and it's the most relaxing part of my day.
6 -
Unpopular opinion: facecamping was fine proxy camping should been nerfed instead.
0 -
That is a nuclear take I was not expecting 😳😳. Have a nice day, Jocelyn!
2 -
We'd rather not spam this so we're doing 1 each.
Almost all perks are good and people are calling them trash cause they don't know how to play with anything other than regression.
Every killer can win against "high MMR" squads if they work for it. And the reverse is true that survivors can pull comebacks even against the likes of nurse.
Solo Q isn't as bad as most claim.
Admittedly ours might be bit of both...
2 -
The... I want to say 1.6... meta shakeup was a massive mistake. Sure... it did shake up the meta, but both sides ended up with metas that made the game worse. They've sort of fixed it on killer side by reviving Pop, but for Survivor... we'll have to see what's meta after MFT gets nerfed.
Also I'm still salty about what they did to Botany Knowledge and Self Care.
5 -
Ok this is a very hot take but……
badham is the most balanced map in the game (sorry I just enjoy playing on this map a lot)
0 -
They should probably bring back 5 second DS stun cause that would be interesting to have back in the meta
0 -
Decisive strike back to 5 second stun
2 -
1. Prestige levels should be hidden from the lobby and only shown post match
2. Decisive strike should be buffed back to 5 seconds
3. With hook grabs removed, unhook cancelling should be removed as well. It's only used to grief teammates, and the less tools griefers can use the healthier this game will be.
4 -
Hot take 1: Artist is the one of the best designed killers for both sides.
Hot take 2: Singularity is way stronger than people think.
Hot take 3: Lucky Break is one of the best perks in the whole game yet no one uses it.
4 -
Pig is an Anti-Tunneling Killer
Gen Efficiency is an issue (not Gen times)... And if we want it to be more balanced we need to expose this
Map generation is another issue

I got a hot take.
We got nearly 40 survivors available…I don’t want to see multiples of the same person in the trial. It would look better, be less confusing for both sides (gameplay wise) and could incentivize more people to dress up or level up more then one character incase someone takes their favorite (positive for BHVR). I don’t think it’s so crazy, I play lots of games where you don’t share the same character and you learn to broaden what you like or are use to and it could be a positive change. Sadly this community would probably use the opportunity to fight and bicker about stealing each others character D:
0 -
Old DBD was a vastly superior game and bringing most of its content back would fix many problems the modern DBD has.
4 -
What old contents would you want to be back? I don't know about old dbd because I started playing dbd this year.
0 -
Solo queue is far easier and less stressful than people say.
2 -
The game is, on average, Killer-leaning.
12 -
Here's some actual spicy hot takes.
- BHVR should drop support for older consoles as soon as enough people have transitioned over to next gen consoles, as it feels like older gen consoles are holding the game back on a technical level.
- The older dbd was, the worse it was in all aspect and the sooner we get rid of all remaining aspects of old dbd, the better it'll be for the game, anyone wanting old dbd back only want so because they're most likely blinded by nostalga and is looking at it through rose-tinted glasses.
- Legion and Wesker have the worst (as in least fitting) chase tracks in the game.
- Pre-reworked maps looked like dogshit in every way, from the bright textures to the color tint.
- Dbd deserves the labor of love steam award.
- Nurse's tome does not contradict her base lore, it merely expanded it as the base lore was already incredibly short and vague to begin with, the only thing the tome contradicts is people's headcanon for the base lore.
- Trickster is one of DBD's best original designed killers lorewise, aesthetic-wise and thematically.
- Tools of Torment is a better chapter than Binding of Kin is.
- Curve Billy with engraving add-ons is one of the least fun killers to face in the game.
1 -
I personally would prefer a 4s stun into a 4s power lockout to make its effects more even vs m1 killers and nurse/blight/spirit/Huntress etc, but basically yes.
0 -
I personally just hope the stun duration is strong enough for the survivor to create distance from the killer
0 -
a decent swf (probably a very small portion of survivor playerbase) > killer > soloq
a miraculous coordinated soloq team still has a good chance against even a good killer though.
0 -
Fair.
I just have a very distinct memory of a game where old DS 5s stun basically didn't matter because I was on Huntress and the survivor didn't manage to get behind something in time.

- The devs are actually doing a good job lately.
- Healing is still powerful and perfectly viable.
- Adrenaline is overturned in metas with fast gen times.
- Solo survivor is not that bad once you get out of low mmr.
- The survivor role is not weak at all.
- Repeated cases of giving up on the hook should penalize you with a DC penalty. First time a player does it they should be given a warning. That way you avoid the "but what if its a new player trying to 4%" argument.
- Victor is awful to play against if the killer player is decent and i am glad Twins is not popular.
- Lucky Break is very underrated.
3 -
Wraith, Freddy and myers are strong killers.
0 -
1: DEVs are better than community for coming up with changes, MFT being the best example
2: MMR> RBMM everything you hate about MMR was present in Rank based match making
3: Chases are and should be balanced with the idea of "when" the killer gets a hit, not "If"'
4: Learning to play against some killer is difficult because you are not guaranteed to face them often enough to learn. I have faced a survivor who looped a blight perfectly but hid in a locker against my Legion
5: Soloq is harder than Killer
6: The mist should be buffed
7: Obsessing with the 4k is dumb, the survivor who got the hatch didnt "win" they got a pity prize
8: Voice acting makes Killers more fun to play and reduce frustration when losing
9: separating ranked/casual is the worst idea the community ever came up with
10: there is absolutely nothing wrong with "sweating"
11: Community treats their favored role like a religion
12: Low tier Killers are not as bad as the community claims them to be
13: Trapper shouldn't be able to hide traps in place where they shouldn't be visible if survivors are paying attention, shouldn't be able to turn the basement into a trap heap, and he shouldn't be able to put trap in front of the door switch.
14 : Oni is the best designed Killer in the game since he encourages both the killer and survivors to use every mechanic in the game
15: If you put TTV in your name you don't get to complain about stream snipers
16: A flying Killer could actually Work in this game
17: I hope they bring more boon perks in the future
18: Ultimate Weapon is overpowered
19: Basement hooks should always be scourge hooks, yes im calling for another change to Monstrous Shrine
20: shroud Offerings should be exclusive to killer
21: DS, UB and DH are still strong perks
1 -
Autodidact is a strong perk
1 -
I kind of agree but also I dont.
Most of the time when Im by myself I just end up playing Killer since I get kind of stressed about letting my team down or throwing the match; but whenever I do SoloQ for Archive Challenges, it actually is pretty fun even if I lose a decent chunk of my matches.
0 -
The MMR softcap is too low and it leads to bad matchmaking. Make good matches first, address fun later. Don't make matches worse to try and contrive the fun factor. You just alienate the top end of your playerbase when you do that.
