Why is trash talk in this game so much worse than in other games?

I'm confused why this community in particular takes trash talk so literally. Other games like Rust, CSGO, Rainbow, COD, League, etc. don't take trash talk nearly as far as this game does, it's like people in this community are set on burning down the lives of a killer that bm'd or a survivor that tbagged... It's not that serious lol. You lost in a video game, suck it up, hit the queue button again or take a break if it really got to you (which it shouldn't). People shouldn't be going into twitch chats or leaving nasty comments under steam profiles, it should end once the game ends. A little bit of flame in the end game chat is fine, but once it leaves the end game chat it's gone too far already. Do people take this game for more than what it is?

It's baffling to me.

You are probably right. Rainbow really annoyed me when me and my friends played. It does have common objectives unlike as you said dbd. For example, tunnelling is a killer stratagies which most 100% killer mains would agree is fair. Survivors would disagree and deem it toxic. Toxicity breeds toxicity therefore tunnelling leads to tbagging and on PC toxic endgame chat.

The only other game I have played that beats dbd's community in regards to toxicity is League

Because there are often punishments in place to deter that type of behavior in those games. League will hit you with a 14 day suspension just to start (if it hasn't changed), which is basically the 'warning'.

R6S is literally creating a 'reputation system' to deter toxicity, so the better you behave/positive matches you have, the better your rewards you'll get, bonuses, etc. And if you decide to continue being toxic, you get point penalties, exp penalties, and can be suspended from the more serious playmodes (standard, ranked).

This game has nothing to punish that behavior so people will always feel free to say whatever they want. I mean, even the report system is a complete joke.

I bet you, if this game had something like League's punishment system or R6S's, things would change fast & more people would bite their tongue.

It is a very high stress game on killer and as survivor it's not fun to get camped/tunneled or deal with trash randoms as survivor. So I wouldn't say it's very uncommon to get a little cross after dealing with that nonsense for more than a few games, doesn't make it right though to insult/trash talk people.

This is the only game I’ve played where I’ve seen people say teabagging should be a reportable thing

DBD is definitely the worst I've seen out of the games I've played. As has been said there's not really any serious punishment for being toxic in chat so people feel like they can say whatever.

I wouldnt say it's the worst but it does have it's fair amount of toxicity due to the nature of the game and it's general balance which is questionable due to the MMR.

People can be lightly trash talking, but I’ve never seen anyone in DBD go as hard as any other game like CoD, and especially Overwatch.

I recently got into Overwatch. I'd say people who play DBD are pretty well behaved in comparison.

Of all the years I’ve played DBD, the times anyone’s been toxic toward me have been few.

Gotta have a decent amount of self control.

I don’t tunnel; feel it isn’t necessary to secure hooks.

I don’t BM on ether side; just a childish behavior.

Sometimes I challenge myself to slug all 4 as fast as possible, but I’ll always pick em right back up n let me wiggle free or pick each other up n then meme a bit w em.

I’m not a mean Killer or a jerk Survivor; There’s just no need for me to play that way. I’ve experienced everything there is to experience in DBD, and I this is how I play.

Also, if initiating post game chat, it’s always a positively charged, detailed description of what I found awesome in someone’s gameplay.

More often than not, (and a testament to your post) people are used to enduring negative and degrading vibes from others. There’s never any healing in that; Contrariwise, most on the receiving end of negativity become defensive, downcast and with increased potential to retaliate.

I’ve found that positive gameplay and feedback overall, result in ongoing healthy emotions shared mutually amongst a majority.

Y’kno, I’ve never played Fortnite, but it’s not a game anyone ever mentions when these discussions arise regarding toxicity. Wondering whether others aren’t playing or if it really just isn’t toxic, fwr.

From experience, it's very rare that I've come across trash talking. However, it clearly happens within DBD more than it should.

There's another reason that may also account for the reputation and that's certain streamers who not only endorse but actively celebrate their toxicity. Unfortunately, like-minded people with sad lives and wanting to hurt others because of their own weaknesses and pain latch on to these people and think it's somehow trendy.

Amongst the answers given to explain certain behaviours - which are also correct - this feels like one which goes under the radar.

All other games that focused on "asymmetrical horror game" has had really bad issues from toxicity of other players. TCSM and Evil Dead: The Game are two games that recently released and has voice chat. I'm glad voice chat IS not in this game, as those two games have essentially proved that it's a horrible feature and half of the players that use it will use it for bad, and will cause more issues. This game isn't that bad, but it has issues.

    Beano744 Member Posts: 87

Yes but even before those systems people would trash talk and it would just be trash talk. People would move on. They wouldn't sit there and latch to the person, you wouldn't see many people going to twitch chats to insult the streamer for winning, it ended when the game ended. It was (most of the time) nothing more than that.

Playing Overwatch with voice chat can be absolutely miserable.

Rust isn't serious though. The amount of times I've been called worse than anything in DBD but I know that it's just messing around. It's like old COD lobbies. You won't see anyone coming to your twitch chat or to your steam profile to trash talk you after the wipe is over, it's just trash talk in game. It ends after the interaction is over. People in the DBD community carry it outside of those interactions which is why I think DBD is worse.

At least in my experience it isn't. I'm sure it comes down to personal definitions of toxicity and how desensitized one is but I really can't say it is again, in my personal experience.

Fortnite has very robust settings to let you control who has any opportunity to communicate with you in any way whatsoever. I'm not 100% on what the default settings are, but you can very easily make it so only friends or friends-of-friends can ever talk to you, join your party and stuff like that.

Of course you might run into in-game trolls. Griefing teammates, using "taunt-like" emotes after beating someone if you count that and so on. But trash talking and the stuff that the most people possible will agree is toxic? You can change a setting or two and make it basically impossible for anyone to do it to you as long as you don't accept every friend invite you get.

But I dont get it, other games both side can use the same characters (one side can use more meta than the other though).

In DBD, its normal to have players play only 1 side, giving a full bias pov in case of gameplay and balance. Which can lead to be more toxic. Though its lucky that I think DBD is the only game where you can not chat during the match.

A friend of mine who didn't really get into DBD pointed out that one of the reasons he wasn't so keen is because "this game compared to a lot of others has this issue where losing feels personal".

It was actually quite a poignant point that I suppose is only really applicable to asym games. 1 player has a lot of strength, vs. multiple players who work together.

For both it can easily feel you're being bullied, either by 1 player stronger than you, or by multiple players ganging up on you...

I don't believe the trash talk is worse by any means in DBD really... seen way way worse elsewhere tbh... but the nature of DBD I think just amplifies the effects of trash talk.

DBD is still the only game where it's affected my personal life through harassment and/or threats.

DBD is still the only game where I would get several messages weekly telling me how and why I should off myself.

DBD is still the only game where I've been consistently targeted and DDoS'd for months when trying to play.

It is by far the most toxic community I've been a part of.

Wow, that’s pretty cool tho, and thx for the info

It’s probably better that they have it set up with such safeguarding measures to avoid the possibilities for toxicity, altogether, seeing as how mainstream and popular Fortnite is. Maybe even promotes a ‘On to the next match’ mentality, for most players, where everything is taken w a grain of salt; and like you mentioned, the ones that wish to express a ‘teabag’ of sorts with the emote taunts will do so; but there’s a vibe like it doesn’t come off as harsh toxicity with FN.

You phrased it well, “personalized definitions of toxicity and how desensitized one is” would most likely be the deciding factor of who gets offended and over what.

  • Xyvielia
    Xyvielia Member Posts: 2,418

Dude, that’s some harsh abuse you and others have suffered/ are suffering, playing this game.

I certainly have experienced it, but (and thankfully) not to the unfortunately, consistently high levels too many (probably majority of) DBD players have, in enduring the onslaught of toxicity from other players.

It’s beyond upsetting just thinking people are being told to end their lives for playing a game. I know it’s happening everyday; and that we’re all not experiencing it personally, as frequently as others, brings the reality of how disturbing it really is, so much more into focus.

I’d like to believe that people, overall, are good natured, and that it’s the world that has twisted individuals, inside, to being tortured beyond the bearability of one’s psyche’s threshold, and really upsetting the balance between good and evil of their conscious… I really don’t know, tho, if it’s actually all just birthed into their DNA.

For Honor is not nearly as toxic as DBD, dominion might be a little bit here and there but definitely not worse than DBD or any other game. Not to mention that the FH players that play duels and dominion somehow couldn't be more different, i very rarely see anyone being salty or toxic in duels.

Apex isn't that toxic either in my experience, its frustrating and full of cheaters but not toxic.

Overwatch is toxic as hell i give you that one, but even then the most toxic Overwatch players pale in comparison to the most innocent and sane Nancy mains which are less toxic and more domestic terrorists judging by the endgame chats.

Unpopular opinion, but DBD is one of, if not the least toxic online gaming community I've come across.

That said, I'm a stereotypical straight white millennial male who keeps their profile private while solo-queing survivor 90% of my games, and plays D-tier killers when I do decide to play Killer. I don't exactly give people a reason to hate me.

This community celebrates diversity more than any other I've been a part of, particularly in the way it empowers members of the LGBTQ+ community. It would not surprise me to learn that many are victim to hate speech and other deplorable behavior that I am simply not witness to because the game's communication system is incredibly primitive.

I feel that a lot of the toxicity players experience in this game is a sort of "crime of opportunity." The power imbalance presents many opportunities for one side to exercise humility AND compassion, the latter of which is frequently in conflict with players' objective.

I don't know what I don't know, so I can't speak to others' experience, but the lack of social channels on DBD has limited my exposure to sensless racist and mysognistic comments that I've grown accustomed to hearing in other online games.

OP i will agree you in that i do think trash talking in this game is very bad. I've played games that people have mentioned here but this game i've had the worst experience with players in it.

I don't know why, but i do think it is.

Because it's all made up. Want to be in the top 5% of MMR? Congrats, you are. Top 1% killer? Today is your day. When you don't tell anyone where they stand relative to the rest of the playerbase, lots of players will assume they're at the top. The devs have always been wrong about this IMO. You are never going to stop players from being competitive. That's not something you can dictate as a developer. Hiding MMR or whatnot doesn't prevent players from turning it into a ranked ladder. It just cuts out the middleman and places many players at the top in their own minds.

  • Xernoton
    Xernoton Member Posts: 5,846

I think it just feels weirdly personal because there is only 1 killer and 4 survivors. So instead of a team game, many consider this a 1v1, which makes toxicity sting a lot more.

I played starwars battlefront 2. Super toxic. It’s part of mmos. It was rough there but I loved it. My streams on twitch get aggressive there 😅 but streams for dbd are full of love 🤣 ggs! Well played! You’re great!! I love you so much! Thanks for being my survivors! Etc etc lol.

    battkefront 2 it’s the opposite.

Had to return to this thread after this afternoon's game.

I tabbed out, so the Spirit held me on her shoulder for 3 minutes.

These occurences are few and far between, but it's definitely alarming how easily the game enables people to victimize others.
