Advice please.
Any advice from vets who have been burned out before. When you feel like you aren't having fun anymore on either side how do you move your goal posts to start trying to have fun again.
Maybe it's the matchmaking but I feel like I'm being outplayed or beat on both sides and I'm just not enjoying myself anymore. When I play solo survivor I'm lucky if I escape 2 or 3 times out of 10 games and when I play killer I feel like I don't have a second to breathe before 2, 3, or 4 gens are done or I getting taken to looping school all day.
Is this remedied by literally just taking a break? I know others have probably felt like this before. I'm not new either I have over 4k hours in the game.

Taking a break is absolutely the best call there. No game is meant to be played forever. Take some time away, play other games, engage with other hobbies and come back only when and if you feel like it.

Depends on whats burning ya out. From the look of it we got 2 recomendations: Don't take the match seriously or take a break.
Try new builds, use gimmicks, have a different goal other than "kill efficiently or else" or "must escape or else" and let go caring. Do something fun in game you would enjoy. With 4k hours by now you probably should know not to worry about 2-3 gens poping regardless.
Sometimes a breath of something different is whats needed.

I've been playing for 6 years... When I get burned out, I usually try to endure it until I've got the skins I wanted from the Rift, and then I drop the game until the new Rift drops so I can come back fresh with a new Archives tome to complete and skins to unlock.

Break time. Play solo games though- Mario, Sonic, stuff like that. Take a break from PvP altogether. Come back for the Anniversary.

Totally understand.
Killer for me is/was chill. I can 3/4K most matches w/o much effort. Possibly due somewhat to the timeframes and region in which I play, although I truly believe it’s because the Devs have buffed Killer immensely in the past 3 years, to the extent where players with high-K hours invested in the side are easily dominating (but many still complain). Some just can’t up their skill level, that’s understandable.
Survivor is a totally different situation, however.
I only main SoloQ, enjoy the challenge.
My SWF fam (who I Love and trust playing w) have actual fam’s of their own, and aren’t playing DBD often. So I don’t SWF often.
SoloQ is dependent on everyone as a team playing on the same page in order for anyone to escape. Unless the first chase is a 3+Gen, then it isn’t probz going to be a worthwhile match. The nerfing of Survivor perks, items, add on’s etc. has brutally ruined the SoloQ experience.
Tunneling not being fully addressed, even after Devs have repositioned their stance on the matter, and the ridiculously HIGH rate at which it occurs is just too unnecessary and unfun.
For all these reasons on both sides, and others, it’s just not a frequently enjoyable experience like it once was, and still can be.
I haven’t played regularly since early August of 2023. In these last 8 months, I’ve hopped back in for Seasonal events and New Game Modes, and quickly n easily shake off any rust, while finding the same nonsense as before; But just playing here n there every once in a while (and briefly) instead of 8+ hours daily like before, has made the game seem less aggravating. Actually seems chill this way for me.
I’ve also found my mental health has improved, and I’ve played SOOOO many other games that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed!
Maybe sth like this would benefit you too, hope so!

Thought the Lights Out gamemode having its fun sucked out (due to tunneling) would've helped get the point across but, well, that seems to not be the case.

Don't worry. It happens to the best of us. The best you can do is to either try and change your attitude for a while or to take a break.
It can help to run some meme builds and not focus on wins but on something else entirely. Maybe there is a perk you have always wanted to get value out of or a killer that you would really like to learn.
The more reliable way to deal with this is to take a break. I do it somewhat regularly. Even just a week off can really help. When everything feels frustrating and you absolutely cannot bring yourself to enjoy the game anymore, then it's good to get some distance. Most of us have done it. Come back when you think you can actually enjoy the game again, if you notice it still doesn't help, then take a longer break. Eventually you will get the distance you need to set your expectations low and have fun just playing DBD.

It also helps you break a lot of the FOMO loops that this game tries to keep you in.

Defo take a break dude. You can't really force yourself to want to do something, especially not something like DBD. In a month or week or however long you'd hypothetically decide to take off, the game will still be here for you. Take a load off, in this day and age, you probably earned it lmao

As already said, the best idea is to actually stop playing completely. I go many months where I pretty much stop playing DBD entirely.
However while playing I do things like run random perk builds, no perks or set myself a separate goal in matches besides the usual gameplay objectives (such as Wiretap/Blastmine blinding etc).
But sometimes the only real solution is just stop playing

When I was really burnt completely out I took an 8 month break, and now when I start getting frustrated on both sides of the game, I’ll start with a week break then extend the break until I’m back to chill again and not letting small dumb things get to me.
Also - ignoring things that make me frustrated too. Like when playing killer, u try not to do any complicated Tome challenges. Hard sweating on killer just isn’t fun for me at all so I avoid. And killer is the only side I have control over.

Honestly second the avoidance of the FOMO rifts/events and such when you are in burnout. As much as I kick myself for missing out on Jake fits, they’ll eventually be available in the store.
oh and if you save the BP from your tome challenges and save 2 million bp ahead of time you can take a 1+ break from the game before a chapter release to give yourself that break.

It's not a good idea to play anything exclusively, especially a PvP game.
You would feel the same in CS, Valo, CoD and so on, they need your focus all the time and have a very intense environment.
I always played other games too, variety makes me excited. There are so many brilliant titles, I wish I'd have more time for them.
Single player and PvE games help you to relax a bit but you can get the same adrenaline. Helldivers 1-2, Phasmo, Remnant, Alien Fireteam Elite, WWZ, Spelunky - just named a few ones I love to spend my time with.
Another help would be to recalibrate your expectations. Having fun should be the no. 1 goal of your games, not winning. You'll lose a lot of time, it's normal.
Pick smaller goals and focus on them. Like shorter chases as killer, better ability usage, fun mindgames. It's up to you, but if you do the same thing over and over, of course you'll be bored.
Also, even with that many hours, you can always improve on both sides.

It’s too late in the game for that unless they just get bored. If they were going to fix tunneling in a major way the time to do it would have been when they had significantly less killers to balance the kill rate around to consider adjustments. Tunneling has long been complained about. It took years to get just basekit BT. Removing it would probably heavily imbalance their formula and require so much work with the amount of killers present today to account for. They’ll probably implement small stuff to mitigate the burden of being tunneled like they have been doing but as you see that usually just leads to abuse when people cross map to body block with their bt in rare instances. That would be a huge project on their end, and that’s just the ugly truth. As survivor you’ll get small stuff to help deter it, but I highly doubt we’ll get anything significant or a complete removal of tunneling unless they plan on nerfing survivor in a huge way when taking out tunneling, so it doesn’t force an entire killer roster rework.

That. I'm happy if I feel like I've gotten objectives in: Gens, rescues, heals, saves, etc. I die plenty, but I also score pretty high generally too.

I like to go with the rule of "Don't buy the premium rift until you've already earnt back the cells on it."
That way I don't feel like I have to play because I already spent money on rewards, instead, I get the rewards if I am enjoying the game enough to earn them.

I took like a year and a half long break from this game and I played:
Spider-Man, god of war ragnarok, elden ring, suicide squad kill the justice league(though the severs are dog water it still is very fun), baldurs gate 3, tiny Tina’s wonderlands, stray, Diablo 4(so much fun if you haven’t played it the story is absolutely amazing!!!) Gotham knights, the devil in me, guardians of the galaxy, house of ashes, tiny Tina’s assault on dragon keep, and stranded deep.
in short playing other things will stimulate your brain and give you the happy chems, and at this point I play this game when I’ve got nothing better to do.

Taking regular breaks from games that you play long term is a good thing. I basically do it with all the games I've been playing for years on and off including DBD. I'll try new games and sometimes add them into the fold and basically rotate when I get bored.
Currently on my list I play DBD, Dayz, Black Desert & wow classic. Most of the time I'll come back to DBD and Dayz over the others as my regulars, but I'll generally only play 1-2 concurrently. Just bought Helldivers 2 after hearing the hype so that might be something I add to the mix if they keep adding content.
One thing I like about coming back to DBD after 3 months off is there's generally new content and usually a bunch of changes to adapt to.

Just take a break. Most DbD Vets take breaks from time to time.
If you don´t want to take a break, then at least ignore the archives. They really kill the fun for me and always pushed me to take a break earlier, because it became so tedious to play.

iwl I used to get away with just playing less, going weeks without opening it, until one day I got the DBD urge again and found it fun. It's gotten so bad recently that I've had to uninstall + hide it for the first time since I started playing, but I'm almost certain I'll be back.
Take a break. Take a long break. I've been playing the same game since 2017 when I was but a wee lad; 6-7 years of playing the same game over and over takes it's toll on anyone. Just hit pause, take a breather, come back when you're ready. It'll do wonders, trust me.

Play something else, look forward to new chapters i.e new killer powers and characters to try. I've taken multiple weeks out of the game, usually when Cod releases.

Ive got around 4000 hours and im currently on a break. This is the 3rd proper break I've had from the game now and everytime I go back, the game is fun again for another 1000 hours until the sadge kicks in. If you're not having fun, you're using your free time to do something you dont like. Might as well go to the gym or go outside or something else gross at that rate.

What others have said. Either take a break (I took almost a hear break) or stop taking the matches so seriously. In the end it's just a game, and you're supposed to be having fun while playing it.

Only advice there is to give is to take a break and stop playing.
I took a 2yr break, when I came back and tried playing again, the same frustrations and problems were still there. I only play maybe twice a month now, and I haven't purchased a DLC since Skull Merchant. Time is the only thing that will tell you weather to keep playing or not.

I've not seriously played for months
I've played a couple of matches the 9th of November, some day in December and the 9th of February. I'm not having fun (not as killer nor as survivor)
Instead I've bought and finished several Metroidvania (Afterimage was a blast) and now I'm replaying all Souls games. I'm currently 62 hours into Elden Ring (second run) and right in front of Malenia. To relax after a few boss fights, I'm playing Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3. All in all I'm having a lot of fun.
After this, there are about 800 other games I own and have never play on Steam, a bunch on the PS5 and I don't even know how many on Epic and on Gog.
I'm likely to come back to DbD some day but I'm not in a hurry.

Definitely taking a break, but also look and find other fun wayd to play the game. I recommend Chest Protector Bubba.
Load in as Bubba using whatever perks you want (My choice is Distressing so Survivors know I am guarding the box, Lightborn so as not to be blinded from the box's majesty, NOED and Bloodwarden to ounish those who try to steal from the box at endgame)
Just load in, find Basement, and guard the box. Youll be able to get Rift fragments, challenge progress with some challenges, and Id say 9 out of 10 games no one bothers you. The fun comes when Survivors play and try to open the box. I like to hook them as punishment but allow for rescues. I have killed Survivors and never feel bad cause ig I hook you twice after you touch the box and you touch it a 3rd time, well thats just natural selection
