Question to the devs: What triggers a protection hit?

A friend of mine went against Pyramid Head while doing his protection hit challenge. He went to take a body block on a injured team mate but the killer used his M2 instead of his M1 and didn't get a protection hit.

I am going to assume that protection hit only happen if any killer use M1 instead of using their powers (m2) Correct?

    A protection hat should be from any source of damage. For example you can get it from Victor or a huntress hatchet. It's about proximity to the other survivor and the killer. If you were at the end of the trail you might have been too far away from the killer for the protection hit to count.
