Survivor role is awful and so is killer role
Nothing but people giving up, DCing, or just blatantly throwing the game. What's the point?
I want to play killer but then I remember how bad it was when I picked Ghostface, got someone use a Eyrie offering and had to play against a sabo squad and rushing the generators like there was no tomorrow.
I was absolutely bored. Looking at this game makes me not wanna touch it ever again.

So the game is awful in general?

Yea they can make the game look good graphically but if the gameplay sucks then the game sucks. They can release a million chapters but nothing will change that.

But you seemingly make that statement based on a few games. This game can provide genuinely amazing matches that are a lot of fun.
Might I ask, what about the gameplay exactly is that you dislike? This would really help to understand your struggle.
Edit: I for myself really enjoy the game itself. What I struggle with is the often unbearable playerbase.

It's the players that make this game awful. I had played survivor for over a year now and it's been nothing but survivors giving up on hook, disconnecting or throwing the game on purpose.
Then when I play killers, I get the most sweatiest survivors trying to make my life as miserable as they possibly can, making the game a slog.
Why should I be playing dead by daylight when there are games that aren't miserable to play and not infested with a insufferable playerbase?

Additionally, I feel like I have regrets spending my money on this game and on a few DLC. I love playing Bill and Ghostface, but the playerbase makes it so bad I just can't stand looking at the game.

You got lucky.
I dont play killer much anymore, but i decided to try freddy.
As soon as the survivors found out it was freddy they stopped doing gens, all 4. And then they started bullying me. When i tried to afk they started spam vaulting. After 2 matches that pretty much went the same way (not 100% but same stuff in a different package) i had enough, and i went for a killer that i play well with, and just like that survivors were nice, no toxic play or harassment at all.
I mean it could be random, but the picture i get is that some survivors are ass hats as soon as they know they have the upper hand, and not so much when its a killer they "respect"

So your problem is the playerbase as well, instead of the gameplay?
1 -
Yes, but the playerbase is part of the gameplay.
0 -
No, not really. Gameplay is how the game plays. The mechanics, points of interest and objectives. People that tbag you are not part of the gameplay neither are people that call you slurs in end game chat.

As a pig main, i know exactly what you are talking about. I often have the feeling that people in this game, regardless of which role they play, become literally evil towards everything they deem "worse". Lower tier killer? Lets be extra rude because they lack the options to do anything about it. Lower hour survivor? Lets tunnel them out asap. No meta perks? Your getting bullied friend.
That has nothing to do with the game itself other than that the perks are availible. However, if certain perks or playstyles are nerfed, others will rise to take their place. This is truly a problem with the playerbase itself.
This is the philosophy i try to follow: treat others the way you want to be treated. Does not only work wonders in real life, but also in game. You dont have to make your opponents experience amazing, however, you dont have to make it as miserable as possible either.

with terrible matchmaking putting you either with opponents that don't know basics of the game or simply give up if anything doesn't go their way (this is happening much more often since depipping removal) as killer or with 10h teammates or teammates working with the killer while you do your objective as survivor…yes, it's awful in general. Only thing that actually manages to make it slightly more fun for me are scrims.

You must be terribly unlucky then.

You are a Light in the Fog. Please never change.
I agree the worst part of the game isn't the game. It's the playerbase. It's 100% the playerbase. Maybe we need more consequences for this sort of behavior. Maybe we need a system of reporting players who deliberately single out and harass or bully others. IDK. IDK what BHVR can do that wouldn't be abused.
It stems from entrenched entitlement. That's it. That's all. There's even some people on these forums way, way too comfortable with saying things like "oh you're just bad, that's why you think X is a problem." No. A problem is a problem and hw good someone may or may not be has no bearing on if that thing's an issue or not. It will still be an issue if you are good, you just know how to deal with it more and expect it.
OP I think you have hit the softcap and that is why this is happening. You struggle because you tried too hard to be too successful too much, by wanting to not just win but DOMINATE above all else. It happens to everyone eventually.
I suggest taking a long long break.

Thx.
A few weeks (months?) back a community manager asked here in the forums on how they could tackle the unpleasant ingame mindset.
I seriously hope that they start loooking into this. Its pushing more people away from their game than some of the balance updates.

I think they are making steps in the right direction by making it more about just trying to have fun and less about comp. The outcry people are having about how "easy" the game is for various sides right now is a form of extinction event, which is what happens when old habits die out - they go through an increased burst of the bad behavior happening before it settles. The longer the habit has been entrenched the more drawn out it is.

Know the feeling, play badly on a killer that is "known" for being OP or hell, even on a mid teir killer, because you just want to try them out for a change of pace and you get told to "uninstall, trash newb git gud" because how dare someone be new and or bad with a killer who strong.
No joke, I had someone tell me "GGez, baby Nurse got smoked. Uninstall and stay out of my lobby." in post-game chat. Like no #########, what clued you in that I was a "baby Nurse" ? Was it the yellow perk load out (All Ears, Bitter, Surge and Nurses) or the fact I was running her Plaid add-on which allows me to see where and how far I am blinking/teleporting? Or the fact I had no clue how her power worked even on simple loops? Like bro, would you have preferred to get smoked by a 2k hour full-aura nurse who's also slugging for the 4K? ISTG some players will never be happy.
Sorry, didn't mean to unload there. But I absolutely agree that many issues within DbD can be summed up by player toxicity, especially elevated when they've been playing for too many hours without a break or have been on an extended loss streak and they're just carrying over frustration and irritations from past matches. So they finally get an "easy" match and it breaks their brains because now they can finally release that pent-up energy and they, ofc, choose to do so in the most toxic way possible with little to no thought on how their little tantrum affects other players.
So yeah, just like you, I try to play the way I would like to see other killers try to play. Which is nice, chill where we all walk away from the match feeling like the game was tough but fair and with a decent amount of BP. Hopefully with only minor tunnelling and/or proxying (because sometimes that playstyle can't be avoided, no matter how hard you try.)

The survivor giving up problem is mostly an issue of lack of incentive to remain in games and broken/unfun killers. Like if you load in against a Blight, Nurse, Billy, etc who downs someone 20 seconds into the match then the game is pretty much over at that point. Then other times it's like a skull merchant or a twins match where you spend half the game being slugged. I would say 90% of games where people give up fit into these categories for me. I don't actually see people quit for no reason that often. I think giving people more reward for finishing matches and fixing things that are unfun to play against would go a long way towards fixing this problem.
7 -
People are regularly going next against every killer at this point. For no discernable reason.
Even if it's a top tier killer, though, that shouldn't be an excuse to quit early.
3 -
Well said! I just wish moore people would realize how their behaviour, EVEN IN A GAME, can affect others.
3 -
Not quite. If you play something that has no ties to anything meta, most people will play. At least from my expience. In the last few months I just played stbfl with 3 other random perks that are not meta on piggy. Had very few people actually quit.
Quite the oppsite honestly. People get extra nasty.

Yup.

I feel this so hard, and it actively scares me away from playing stronger Killers. The abuse I get playing as Myers pales in comparison to what I get if I play Cenobite.
They don't even have to be strong, just annoying. I dropped Legion because of the sheer disrespect and hate I got for things like just playing normally trying to Frenzy chain for BP.
1 -
I know the Legion struggles so bad. Like never mind that they're pretty mid-tier because of how disadvantaged they are on large maps, not to mention with all these new perks/tiles for "chase extension" and people are just pre-running/dropping the moment they hear their TR. But they are by no means the "worst killer to face" There are others for that, like Plague, for example, who does everything that people complain about Legion doing but infinitely worse imho because her power can linger on objectives. While Legion is an M1 killer with a chase power that inflicts deep wound, sure mending is annoying, but just play around Legion's power and don't group up and you'll be fine.
But as for the abuse, I understand as well. I got called a "sweaty Legion" for bringing Franklin's to counter a wannabe flashlight bully squad. And they got mad that I kept kitting them outside of power to make them drop their purple items with strong add-ons. Never mind they gave up the moment they realised they couldn't effectively bully me as they hoped. But somehow its still my fault.
Anyway, the sore winners are also why I don't bother much with killers like Nurse, Blight, Spirirt, Wesker etc. It's also why I hesitate to play new killers like The Unknown, Vecna and Dracula, because people will be mad if I'm not a P100 sweet lord going for the 4K. Yet, as mentioned above will still be upset if you're just a P1 with yellow perks experimenting with how their power works and now really trying to "win".
Seriously, do people want to sweat their balls off every game or do they want to play chill? Or is this a case of people sitting in a fire and complaining that it's hot?1 -
It happens to Survivors too, Sable is a Survivor I enjoy running on occasion, she's in my roster. I love Sable, I love her aesthetic, it reminds me of The Craft and I really love that.
But because there's so. Friggin'. Many toxic Sables out there, I consistently always get targeted out as her SO BAD. I'm not toxic, I'm not a mean person, I don't teabag and don't run obnoxious builds. But no matter what I do, I get targeted by both Killers and Survivors simply for daring to play a Survivor people don't like because… why, exactly? Because she has crappy lore? Because people don't like her design or personality? Because she's not as fleshed out as other Survivors yet? It's absurd. I just wanna be a silly Goth girl wing-haver.
And the sad thing is Skull Merchant gets this same treatment for the same reason, so now the only people who play her do it to be toxic with her. It's ridiculous.
