Events vs. community, what's the point?
Haunted by Daylight 2024 literally just started and you can already see posts on various socials and even here complaining about event being "unfun". Why unfun you might ask? Because there has to be that one lil strawman to be pulled when event isn't 100% shifted towards the side of players complaining balance wise, like you can see in this event too.
Last year Halloween event was considered fun by many survivor players because well...killers weren't able to use powers inside void, meaning screw quite a lot of killers, but mostly 4.4 killers, Nurse and killers with limited powers, like Oni. Void was and still is a literal vacuum for pressure but somehow, this year's event is considered unfun because...survivors are exhausted and broken when injured while inside the void? Like seriously?
Morale of the story, BHVR should just stop releasing events in general when community is this much ungrateful and petty.

I think you need to play the survivor side in the current event to be honest. You will be surprised to how bad it actually is.
And before you complain or argue: I have been playing both sides 50/50 during this, so don't think that I am biased. What BHVR did this year was to flip the table completely, instead of finding the sweetspot in the middle, and in short: Killers are way too strong in this event. Also, don't forget that last year, survivors had access to pre-nerf Made For This, while this year, no one is using it any more.
* Not to mention the ridiculous amount of aura reading we have today as well.35 -
When you mix a casual party game with competitive players, you get issues. Like these. Its like trying to force oil and water together.
12 -
except for easy 2-taps with haunts, nothing else gives killer incentive to play this event mode. Entering the void as killer is a lose-lose situation because you not only lose all the map pressure because you are completely isolated from the rest of the map, but also have strong loops inside the very void.
party games are the ones that are almost exclusively played in custom isolated lobbies, dbd isn't a party game + the very nature of DbD being a pvp game makes it competitive. I have nothing against people playing to win, i hate it when people want events and regular game to gift them free wins while handicapping opponents as much as possible

I've seen far more killers goofing off in this event. Lots of memes and fun to be had. Seems to have brought out the better side of the community.
When it comes to serious games, the event has been great. The void actually has some semi decent pallets and loops, and often turns what would normally be a complete dead zone into something you can actually try and play... and guess what, we're still playing DBD in the void rather than basic m1 killer with no power BS.
Then the shattered vials are actually pretty strong, and allow for some very unique and fun mind games that tend to mess with stronger killers than weaker ones. I've faked a few teleports by running to a portal and vialing, then just not moving.
I'd say the event is great myself. However you know... everyone has got to complain. 🫠
7 -
It's not just "complaining", its constructive criticism and expressing things which like not only one but several people experience. If you are someone who enjoys the event, please play it and let people express their opinions about it. A large community can never be 100% satisfied, who would have thought…
17 -
even though i'm stating my objective point during this event, i am also fairly goofing off, bringing Agi only with event offering, getting 8 hooks and then acting like some magician in the void while transferring the energy😄
1 -
i wouldn't have problem if it was constructive criticism, but all i see is people acting like event is only fun when it's completely unbalanced towards the side they play
3 -
Because last year it was so "fun" to be able to get into the Void to get free escape in the middle of a chase, especially when the portal closed right after you got inside. Where were all the complaints back then when only one side could make use of the event? In the current event there is a gimmick for each side, the Void is to enter and pick it up, that's all and that's how it should be. Exactly the same as collecting the invitation during the anniversary event.
4 -
the event was extremely abused last year and i saw no point in playing Oni, people just go into the void to force me out of power with 0 tradeoffs , rinse and repeat
7 -
I understand your point, but is it really the community's fault? It is BHVR that fails to balance things fairly. There is always one side that is being overtuned- like last year survivors were the stronger ones, so the killer got overbuffed this year, and that just has to be called out
3 -
It's always the same. The Christmas event was also "fun" when the snowman gave an extra hit and everyone used it in the middle of a chase. The next year they changed it and suddenly it wasn't as fun anymore...
11 -
only actually dumb thing that is on killer side in this event are haunts, but they serve only as some kind of antiloop and for 2-taps (and imho they should have a cooldown between using your attack on survivor and them) but everything else is on completely opposite side, since whole void realm just cancels the most important thing killer should do, your map pressure capabilities.
There is truly little to 0 incentive for me to enter the void as the killer, BPs rewards are poor at the end, people freely do gens while i'm in the void and that's about it.
And even with all of that, i just go for goofing off in the mode
2 -
Your feedback re last event is valid. As is other people's feedback for this event.
6 -
except for easy 2-taps with haunts, nothing else gives killer incentive to play this event mode
That is just a lazy way to play in my opinion. Pretty sure this "mechanic" is an exploit, and was never intended to work like this. It is like you are giving every killer the Knight's power, with a guaranteed hit, which is super-unfun to go up against.
But this one goes for both sides: Relax, and try to goof off a little more, instead of the constant tunneling/genrushing that is going on inside the event. Go out there and smash some pumpkins instead!

But this one goes for both sides: Relax, and try to goof off a little more, instead of the constant tunneling/genrushing that is going on inside the event. Go out there and smash some pumpkins instead!
that's what i'm doing, Agi only + event offering + pumpkin smashing. Going for 8 hooks and then nodding to everyone to goof off in the void
3 -
Same here. I go for my 8 hooks, and then I just goof off with the survivors, and farming with them
0 -
Agreed with the people who say to just relax and enjoy it! Here's my opinion:
These events are way more fun if you just go kick some pumpkins and throw a smoke bomb on the hatch before you jump in!
And it's a celebration, so try to make sure all five players have a good time! So killers: try to give your survivors a decent match, but also let them have some fun. And survivors: interact with your killers, do gens for your team, do saves and stuff, don't take it too seriously, and get creative with your smoke bomb gem things! Celebrate the season! (Also don't take it too personally if the other side does their goal ;)

Don't mind the instant complaints - it was always like that on my memory. :D
A fairly pointed criticism is never a bad thing - it something that MUST be said in order for developers to see and make a better changes in the future.
Have you seen how they improved this event compared to previous one in 2023? I'm glad people had complaints.
1 -
I think the problem is survivors keep getting mediocre mechanics during all the events but killers keep getting busted mechanics, and its really exhausting when youre already losing most of your matches.
10 -
This is what happens when devs ignore the majority of players' playstyles and pretend this game doesn't need a proper ranking mode. This is the sweatiest game I've ever played, even more so than any other game with an actual competitive mode.
2 -
I'm playing the event for the BP bonus but I'm not interacting with any of the event stuff for the most part, don't really care for any of it
0 -
void as a whole is a mechanic that completely dumps killer's map pressure, and only haunts are busted for killer, but the whole mode was intentionally put as a separate quite primarily so that players from both sides enjoy it as a way to goof of (jokes on you so many complaints about specifically balance literally tell you people really wanna tryhard in this mode too)
2 -
Dbd is labled as a party game. It was conceived as a party game. There was little intent for it to be 'competitive.'
Be that as it may be, It has grown and has attracted the competitive crowd. Enter all the problems with the game regarding balance.
There will never be balance. Because there was never intentions of it being balanced, just fun.
This is all fact. Up to you to understand and accept it. Or not! But the problems most of the forums complain about, are all due to the influx of competitive players.
8 -
The community dismisses the voices of enjoyment for the voices of pain.
5 -
Why waste good suffering?
2 -
Haha! It’s very on brand isn’t it?
3 -
My Issue with the event is that I see no purpose of playing it. It makes playing survivor just more troublesome.
- Killers get Ranged Attack with the Event.
- The Smoke Bomb isn't even good in the sense of, you cannot see sh*t as a survivor. It's a double edged sword meanwhile killers can double tap you with their Event Power.
- Joining and Exiting the Void takes ages (I know it's so survivors cannot abuse it)
- Killers get free pressure since survivors once again have a new objective (yes the void is useless but we all want our BP)
- No perk limitation = the same 4 anti-gen builds again
- The amount of information the killer side now gets: You can see when a survivor is in the void ontop of permanent aura reading if the killers stays in it.
- The Void applies exhaustion (no dead hard, Iron Will, Sprint Burst etc).
- The new Loops in the void are.. something. It's not worth looping there especially since once you are downed, you are trapped in it. And in most cases it takes too long to leave, so it's a perfect tool to become permenantly slugged in it (Most likely in the end game where you don't have to worry about Gens).
- Very subjective but I have rarely seen so many killers tunnel this hard in a event. I don't know what it is, but some people just love ruining events for one said. Yes it goes both ways, but this time I feel some killers really want to ruin the experience.
In short, it is a potentially fun event with useless objectives and… weird balancing. I am happy for those who enjoy they time but I dislike the event for said reasons especially with the hard tunneling I am seeing in every match right now.
12 -
i have countless arguments to disprove your statement, but this thread is not the place for those since it has nothing to do with the actual topic
1 -
While there is a lot of complaining that can be heard on all socials, theyre just a very vocal minority at the end of the day.
Doesnt mean their opinion is invalid, just means that there are more than likely a lot more people that enjoy the event that just simply arent vocal since they tend to stay away from social media (myself included, ######### twitter)
4 -
I think the major issue with the event is that Haunts are extremely OP. Completely unreactable, no windup time or anything, just a free injury.
I really like what they've done with the Void mechanics, the fact that there's actual resources in them, the verticality is really cool. Smoke Bombs are cool, but a little niche at times, but I've been having fun with them. I hope they get turned into a perk.
The fact that you get Exhausted doesn't make sense, and the fact that only the killer can see who's in the void also doesn't make any sense. It'd be really nice if that information was also extended to the Survivors, since you can't really tell which one of your teammates are in the void if you're solo.
Haunts are overpowered as hell though and kind of suck the fun out of everything. That and the constant barrage of tryhards that the events seem to summon.
5 -
This sums it up. All my matches we get destroyed at 5 gens and for some reason nobody is working on gens when i play survivor, Everyone goes down in 5 - 10 seconds… im actually wondering if they are bots or something.
8 -
Except that absolutely noone said anything like that. Youre just making up something without any arguments.
3 -
yeah, nobody complained about this year's Halloween event, nobody complained about Winter event when Snowmen couldn't give you free health state anymore, i made it all up, sure
2 -
Complaining and saying that they want something being just in their favor are two entirely different things. And again nobody said anything about the event having to favor survivors. People just pointed out that this event is favoring killers so much that there is literally nothing to gain as survivor. And thats just how it actually is. No chance denying that.
9 -
What I am tired of is killers playing like they're going for Olympic gold during events. If you want to do that pls do that in the normal queue and let people who want to enjoy the event do their thing.
11 -
literally nothing to gain as survivor?
- entering the void as the killer leads you into a big disadvantage while survivors have free time to do gens.
- Smoke bombs are really a good tool to screw up the killer in chase
- Having your scratch marks removed literally gives you upper hand against killer
Killer has one advantage: haunts, and they serve as an antiloop tool and i admit that one is dumb since you can easily 2-tap if you time releasing the haunt well.
Personally, i don't care that i waste my time in the void since i'm playing exclusively for event objectives, but thinking survivors have nothing during this event is extreme exaggeration.
survivors play exactly the same, and it's a never-ending circle.
3 -
My goal most of the time is something like 10 hooks: a little bit Lethality, but not sweating too much. I must say, I really like the Voidbombs, they add a certain chaotic quality to the game that I haven't seen … since Chaos Shuffle ^^""" But you probably get what I mean, many matches of "normal" DBD are quite predictable to a certain degree, with much of the same being played, but the Void Bombs … Chefs KIss! They can help a lot, but survivors ain't immune to its effect either, and I have at one time weaved my way through a shrouded Jungle Gym with a survivor on my shoulder and found the hook by sheer dumb luck and determination :D
At other times I have run ineffective against walls and stuck there for the whole duration.
EDIT: BTW, how exactly do the killer haunts work? Do they fly for a certain distance and then slash? And if they just zoom by they make the survivors scream? Or will they colide with obstacles and slash? I really have no idea how they work and how some killers can reliably two-tap survivors with them and their M1 attack ^^
0 -
I'm not convinced. You're broken and exhausted in the void, and that's it. Any advantages the killer got with event abilities, survivors have enough tools to counter those anyway. And you're complaining about aura reading. What's wrong with it? The fact that the killer can find you? Is that the determining factor whether you live or die, the killer simply finding you?
2 -
Because they play for "fun" and "new/exciting content," except when they don't have massive advantage, which this mode apparently challenges. I'm sure those cute little killer abilities just turn Myers and Ghost Face from C tier to S real quick. That's the impression these survivor mains are giving.
1 -
They are petty. What they must do, to have this kind of reaction all the time, is say, "What angle can we view this new update/mode from, to where it appears killer-sided?" Because it seems like every time killer gets a bone, everybody loses their minds. But DS and Dead Hard being meta since their release over 6 years ago? Nah, that's fine.
2 -
Noone gives such impressions. Stop making up something that doesnt correspond to reality.
5 -
Had some fun playing the event before dinner yesterday. Memeing and what not. My friend and I like kicking pumpkins and throwing down the smoke grenades and playing the lute inside like we're on stage at a concert. (It's an event, if we wanted to play real matches we wouldn't play the event.)
Returned to playing the event after dinner, every match sucked. When I got trolled to death by two teammates and the killer wouldn't kill anyone else after, I left my friend to play a solo match and got put with a 3-man… so yeah, bad night. Throughout the matches we were getting killed at 4 or 5 gens, we were getting left on the ground a lot, killers and survivors seemed on completely different pages about just how seriously each side was taking the matches, and after a while we seemed to be getting more and more trolling teammates who didn't want to do anything but for some reason went out of their way to make sure their teammates died (not hiding but actively trying to get others killed), so we quit playing quite early.
And I still miss releasing haunts as a survivor. That was more fun than the smoke grenades.

That's my big takeaway. You can't throw a big party with a ton of people and let everyone do whatever they want. It'll be ruined for everyone before midnight. Similarly, you can't have events in DbD without some guard rails in place to keep players from ruining it for everyone. You'd get kicked out of the party IRL if you kept flipping over the beer pong table. So let's not let people hard tunnel at 5 gens and run Franklin's in an event.
9 -
I'm just going to say it: killer players are the biggest reason these events always suck. It's always non-stop camping, slugging, and tunneling game after game, with Nurse and Blight using the sweatiest perks and add-ons imaginable. I'm not saying this doesn't happen to killers as well (I play both sides), but it's certainly not as common in my games as those killer "tactics" that I already mentioned.
As someone else mentioned, there needs to be limitations in these events. Camping, tunneling, and slugging should be made less viable, and certain perks and offerings should be removed from both sides. These events are their own thing and are separate from the main game, so this could happen. Just something needs to be done to curb all of this toxicity during EVERY EVENT.
It's important to remember that these events should try to be balanced for both sides instead of swinging from one extreme to another. Survivors are not complaining because it doesn't heavily favor them this year, they are complaining like killers did last year because it isn't balanced and it's taking the fun out of the event. So, let's think before we type and consider both perspectives.

I'm not the one to hide away like some urban evading Blendette in a bush, if that is what you are thinking. But hiding near a gen, waiting for the killer to leave, so that I can put more pressure on them. Thanks to the over-abundance of killers running Nowhere to Hide these days, this strategy is too easily countered.
Really makes me miss the old days where you could almost hide in plain sight 🙃
So many funny moments were made back then4 -
To be fair on the Nurse/Blight players. I have been on the receiving end of too many tunneling + slugging Nemesis players recently - Like 60-70% of my survivor games has been nothing but Nemesis.
And surprisingly, Pinheads too. These are the kinds who are really souring the event for me, whenever I play survivor.
More often then not, these come from the Epic Games launcher (which I wished to God that you could turn off the cross-play for that platform) - Speaking of which, apparently you can not turn off cross-play on the Steam version of the game, at least I was unable to do that last time I tried. As killer, I tend to get much less sweaty opponents, and I often end up having fun and goofing off with them in the end.
I think I have had two matches (out of at least 25) that had a really good survivor team put up against me.
I often see survivors give up or DC though. It really should not be necessary to do in the event, as it only makes the game 100 times harder for the remaining survivors.2 -
gonna be honest I’m just not a fan of having to interact with the void thing I didn’t play the game last October but it just feels like I’m throwing the game when I’m running around there
3 -
Nah cuz you can use the portals to get to the other side of the map. you can also appear next to gens on some of the portal spawns, so after a hook you have stolen the survivors event progress then you get your ghost that allows any killer to have a range down and back out, it takes survivors 1.25 seconds to enter and killer .2 seconds so in no way are you losing pressure
4 -
i already managed to clutch some matches thanks to portals as survivor, you just realize where each portal takes you and you can actually use it to your advantage lol neither portals nor smoke bombs are nearly as useless as people present them to be, especially smoke bombs
