Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Suggestion - "Revealed" status effect should be added to 1v4

Due to the constant aura reading right now the state of stealth in DBD is simply miserable, a game that supposedly is horror or has horror elements.

When playing killer I see new survivor players rightfully trying to hide from me even though I know their exact location thanks to one of the multiple aura reading perks currently featured in the game (my loadout is gearhard + floods of rage). Unfortunately for that player, they don't know that so they end up getting hit or being downed completely for free. Now imagine a new player in their first couple hundred DBD hours still immersed in the horror element of the game finding out (the hard way) that stealth isn't an option.

Knowing that your aura is revealed doesn't prevent the aura reading effect from fulfiling its goal of revealing that survivor for the killer but it allows that survivor to react sooner instead of being hit for free because they thought they were safe.

While veteran players will claim a lot of aura reading procs are telegraphed (mainly Nowhere to Hide), you can't possibly account for all potential aura reading perks and their activation requirement, specially so when players are so accustomed to expecting anti-gen perks.

Even if as a veteran player you can anticipate some of them, that's besides the point.

The first point is that, much like in the 2v8 or even TCSM, allowing survivors to know that their aura is being shown doesn't negate the effect. Killers still see your location and can play accordingly.

The second point is pertaining new players, being met with the frustrating aspect of constantly getting hit for free because they thought stealth was valid in a horror based game.

The third point is that while in the past we had a handful of aura reading perks, BHVR went on overdrive and released too many with all sorts of activation conditions.

  • Awakened Awareness - The killer is carrying a teammate.
  • Nurse's Calling - Healing or Self-healing.
  • BBQ - The killer hooked a survivor.
  • Bitter Murmur - A generator was completed near you.
  • Blood Warden - You entered the exit gate.
  • Darkness Revealed - The killer opened a locker anywhere on the map and you happened to be near one too.
  • Gearhead - You hit a skill check while the killer perk was active.
  • I'm All Ears - You fast vaulted.
  • Floods of Rage - Somebody was unhooked. This one is the perk that I use the most and notice the most damage. A survivor is successfully stealthing around me but because an unhook goes through across the map, it immediately reveals their location and gives me a free hit/down.
  • Friends Til The End - A teammate was hooked while you are the obsession. This one at least has the exposed effect.
  • Nowhere to Hide - The killer kicked a generator.
  • Nemesis - You stunned the killer.
  • Lethal Pursuer - The match just started. Many players still try to use stealth at the beginning of matches thinking the killer is just scouting the map when in reality the killer is b-lining towards them.
  • Territorial Imperative - You entered the basement.
  • Undying - A totem is somewhere close to you but you wasn't aware (specially damaging in indoor maps). The announcement that you are "debuffed" by a hex only procs once.
  • Weave Attunament - An item is dropped somewhere near you.

Forgot some, thanks to the other user for listing them:

  • Eruption = if survivor is working on it, they scream and have their aura shown.
  • Face the darkness = scream+ aura proc
  • Hang man trick = show aura of sabo
  • Hoarder = show aura if opening chest
  • Human Greed = Show your aura by a chest
  • Lightborn = immune to blinds and shows aura of person who did it
  • Predator = Doing your job of losing the killer only for them to know where you are
  • Zansation Tatics = show aura of some dropping a pallet

In addition to these, they also reminded another multitude of killer add-ons that reveal auras.

I'm not against aura reading, I think being found and being caught are two events extremely far apart but there has to be something to let the survivor know that their attempt at stealthing is being completed negated.

The killer will still have several benefits from knowing where that survivor is.

Disagree entirely. A lot of aura perks thrive on the element of surprise, and there are a lot of bad aura perks that would get hurt further with this change.

You can also identify what aura perks are in play with enough game sense.

It should be on a case-by-case basis. Perks like Weave Attunement revealing themselves is fine, but it should not be a blanket thing.

    You missed some stuff.

Lightborn= immune to blinds and shows aura of person who did it

Predator = Doing your job of losing the killer only for them to know where you are

Zansation Tatics= show aura of some dropping a pallet

Face the darkness= scream+ aura proc

Hoarder = show aura if opening chest

Hang man trick= show aura of sabo

Human Greed = Show your aura by a chest

Eruption= if survivor is working on it, they scream and have their aura shown.

Then every single killer has an add on that reveals someone order which I wont go through listing all that. It really is funny how survivors are not to be able stack anying anymore like haste/endurance but killers has the luxury to stack aura reading/haste effects /gen slow down/ expose/ exhaustion effects, scream effects and pretty much anything else you can think of.

Goes to show how overwhelming they are and yeah, I completely forgot about add-ons.

While I was writting this I was literally in-game using the search bar to locate as many perks as possible.

    It's too much.

And adding the "revealed" won't negate their effects but at least it won't be constant free hits/downs.

Personally I'd love to have the same effect TCSM uses (highlighting the survivor in yellow while their aura is revealed) but I dont think BHVR can achieve that so I'll settle for the status effect.

I have a couple issues with this pitch myself, just personally speaking.

The first one is the elephant in the room so I'll address it first. Stealth is, of course, completely viable and very much an option… as long as by "stealth" you don't mean "crouching in a bush". That's no longer 100% reliable and can be quite risky if you haven't seen the killer demonstrate their perks yet.

Stealth is a playstyle that involves leveraging specific tools and making specific decisions, at least if you want it to be less of a risk.

Beyond that, the thing about killer aura reading perks is that there may be a large number of them… but most of them aren't very good, and a lot of them aren't ones that'll catch you when you're trying to stealth. I'm All Ears, Predator, and Zanshin Tactics are part of the list of aura perks, but they only activate in chase, they can't be used to give "free" hits on someone trying to crouch behind a wall.

Similarly, something like BBQ, Alien Instinct, Friends til the End, and even arguably Gearhead can't be used that way, they either activate when the killer's further away or they outright require you to be doing something that isn't trying to play stealthy.

If we're talking about aura perks that actually affect trying to play stealthy the list is a lot shorter, and not particularly overbearing. They each have clear activation conditions that limit their use, and there are tools to defend against them on the survivor side too. The only real exception is Nowhere To Hide, that perk is not telegraphed and is a little too good at revealing survivors just in general instead of only catching people trying to crouch near the gen. I would support that perk being nerfed.

So, adding in the Revealed status effect would just be far too harsh of a nerf to a broadly unproblematic perk class. There are ways of defending against the tools that exist, each of those tools (with one exception) is well balanced or at least not problematic, the killer can't have more than four at once, and learning how to spot what the killer has is part of getting better at the game so you should expect newer players are going to be surprised by pretty much any perk that can directly affect them.

Now, all that being said, I do have a compromise suggestion that I think would help out newer players a lot, I've talked about it before: Make this effect something a perk does. Specifically, make it what Spine Chill does. That's a universal perk, everyone has it by default, and its current effect is quite bad- plus, this effect would be very thematic to the perk's name and flavour text.

That way, newer players have a clear tool to use for learning when the killer can see them, but it's not an overbearing basekit change that'd severely harm an entire class. Plus, more established players can get a lot out of knowing exactly when they're being seen too, so it's not even just a new player perk either.

I think this is a great idea for the new player experience and helping people learn what can trigger aura reveals

    The revealed status would help.

The aura reading is completely unintuitive like you mentioned. It is natural that you try to hide and this worked in the game for a long time.

There is just way way to much aura reveal stuff in the game now.
