What were matches like before MMR?

I just look at the tragedy that non MMR games in the PTB are and wonder how on earth the old system was in any way better...

The issue I think people.habe with MMR is if you go against the blood point rewards, there is a decent chance you go against a much higher or much lower ranked opponents.

Following the bloodpoints tends to result in generally pretty fun and fair games for me. Going against the bloodpoints tends to result in smashing my opponents into the ground with ease and being bored, or getting completely sauced and left feeling utterly frustrated and embarrassed... the fact everyone here says this was basically the status quo is mind boggling to me 😳

Big mention, but you could also switch killers in game lobby. Which was just ######### fantastic honestly because if you loaded in and saw a bully squad or wanted to change up who you were playing for whatever reason, you could just switch your killer on the fly to whichever killer you felt best. Man…losing that really stunk.

Ah, you could do that in the past?

I just started playing killer months ago, so I wasn't aware during the pip system that you could swap between killers when readying up in the lobby. I just mainly played survivor for many years, obviously still play survivor a majority of the time but I didn't even know of that, lol.

Makes sense because there wasn't an MMR attached to the killer that you played, but interesting. 🤔 Thanks for sharing that. 😊

You're welcome :). Always happy to find a reason to share some of the history and nostalgia of this game. I also felt that was an important piece of context to the complete timeline of what was going on during this period of the game's history. It was only there for a few years early on and iirc by around 2020 it was patched out for the reason you stated.

Yeah, I probably played in 2022 lol.

Basically I started playing when it became free for PS Plus, haha. I just have been attached to it since then. 🥲 But I didn't know that at all, usually when I played killer - if I noticed a bunch of flashlights... I just would equip Starstruck (I didn't have Lightborne leveled up lol).

But I wasn't aware that you simply swap on the fly like that, I know for survivor obviously we could swap last second. I never did it, but I knew of the concept so that's a very interesting fact that I wasn't aware of. 😂 Always feel like you learn something new with the game each time you come on the forums.

Had to edit because apparently it became free in 2022 😂 honestly feels longer than that - how time flies for sure!

As someone who played in rank 1 back in the day, I say that there was more variation of skill level in the same day, now I still see this variation but throughout the week.

Let me explain, before in same day I would get high level, mid level, and low level survivors one after the other. Nowadays, I still get those variations, but they are based on the week days, in a sense that I only get sweaty players on Sundays, and on Mondays and Tuesdays I get mid level survivors for example. I am not sure if this is merely a coincidence, but it seems really consistent.

Also, beyond that I would also like to know that potato survivors have nearly disappeared after the MMR implementation. Sometimes I do see some weak ones, but I very rarely see the ones that are clueless about the game.

The player mentality was better which made games more fun. There was a rule of thumb for getting in and staying in red ranks for survivor - 2 gens, 2 totems, 2 unhooks, and 2 chases. For killers you had to hook each survivor multiple times if you wanted to stay in red ranks. This encouraged better gameplay than the only escape/kill matter gameplay we have now. The sweatiest match back then would be considered a light casual match now. More often if one side steam rolled the other they'd switch to farming - they'd want to do enough to pip/safety pip and since kills/escapes weren't a deciding factor for rank killers would let survivors go and survivors would offer themselves up for a kill pretty often.

Since there was more to rank than just escape/die survivors didn't give up as easily as often. Sure you might die BUT you can atleast keep playing and do some stuff to hold your rank. That's not a possibility now since it doesn't matter if you die 30 seconds in or 5 minutes in, you're dropping rank the same. Pretty much the old system gave survivors hope where this system doesn't.

There were alot of rainbow rank lobbies because devs prioritized wait time over making sure those closest in rank were matched together. This was the main complaint people had at the time for being unhappy with ranked mode.

Yeah, they used to be hunched over and scared. Now they're standing/staring defiantly at the killer like Superman. They should've gone though with changing the survivor running animation, so 360s could be harder, less bullying noobs. But bullying is something that's valued in this game, so they scrapped that change.
