Why does a knight's guard disappear so fast?

Sorry for asking this stupid question. I haven't played this game for a long while so I'm not up to date with the latest changes.
This Bill was being chased by me and my assassin but I notice that if I get too close, the assassin disappears almost instantaneously. Is this intended?

If you are near the guard while it is chasing a survivor it loses chase time 3x faster.

Thanks. Ok that makes a lot more sense now. Damn. I guess I have to change the way I play with him now. Is there anything else important I missed?

The main thing other than that is that longer paths make it so the flag takes longer to spawn. There's also individual guard cooldowns you can switch between, the path needs to be 10 meters to place a guard, you can place a guard while another guard is out, but it removes the other guard and puts it on cooldown, and the chase stats of carnifex moved to jailer, but the carnifex still has the fast break.

Yeah that change where I can manually change my guard is beautiful. I hated the first power where you could only cycle through every unique guard if he activates his power and have to hit his guard to cancel the patrol.

They also increased the detection range of all the guards by 2 meters (partial Map of the Realm basekit) so the addon doesn't feel required anymore and they also improved/reworked a lot of his bad addons. The "use X guard twice in a row" addons were changed to reduce the cooldowns of those guards instead with the new system.

They improved the knight a lot over the years. I'm happy I'm back.
