White ward and disconnecting

I had it now several time happen as a killer who uses franklin that survivors disconnect before I can finally hit them.

My question now:

if I hit them and they loose their item, it's gone - the withe ward only protects the item you have in hand at the time of dying.

But what happens if a player disconnects? Does he keep that item? Or is it still lost, even when using white ward and he had the item in his hand?

    I could be wrong as I’m not 100% sure, but I believe the only way you keep your items from a trial, is if you escape/game doesn’t start (somebody disconnects before the game starts, causing the game to end before it’s loaded in.)
