i keep hearing that the solution to a lot of game strategies is 'mindgaming', but whenever i look it up i just see videos of survivors misplaying

can someone explain what mindgaming is when it doesnt involve survivors just making errors?

There's no sure fire strategy that will produce a specific outcome as if you were playing an NPC you could bait, but mind gaming is simply doing certain maneuvers that can aid in you extending a loop/chase, staying alive, and hopefully making it out the game.

Look at any 5 gen chase compilation and you'll see a bunch of examples.

    • faking the drop of a pallet

    • faking the vault of a pallet or window

    • slow vaulting a pallet/window so the killer doesn't get a fast vault sound cue

    • changing your pathing to make it more unconventional

    • losing line of sight and using your third person advantage to check spot around the corner to see what the killer is doing

    • attempting a 360 to make the killer think you'll continue to try it. Even twitching your character in one direction at the right time can cause the killer to do a camera flick to try and counter what they think will be a spin.

Mind gaming on either side is basicly doing something that makes the other player predict that you will do one thing and then you end up doing the other, which results in the killer finally catching up to the survivor or the survivor getting just enough time to last even longer in a chase.

For killers one example is looking another direction before coming around a corner so that the survivor is not seeing the red stain coming from that direction, or even turning off your terror radius mid chase behind walls with killers like ghost face/pig/chucky/onryo. Or starting to go one way and then backing up and coming from the other direction. Basicly anything that makes you catch the survivor by surprise while they try to predict your movements in chase. Even going towards a pallet then backing up before they can drop it, can allow some killers to hit over it or prevent the stun and break or vault pallet faster (often happens on legion)

For survivors its more like baiting attacks for example a window you pretend to go to vault but juke to the side instead and then nemisis ends up whipping the empty window and goes into an attack cooldown allowing you to vault through. Or pretending to go one way, predicting the killers movements and avoiding going that way and he ends up trying to cut you off from that direction only to find you didnt go in that direction which gives you more distance, or even quickly crouching around a corner or in a bush and they don't see you as the turn around the corner and they keep running forword or cant see you in the bush, giving you the chance to escape the chase or more distance.
