Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Rift Fragments Changes are just Plain Bad

I was excited to buy the new survivor and play today, but this new grindy update has changed my mind.

I've checked and you can no longer get Rift Fragments collecting Player XP?

That means that Rift Pass progression is now 100% tied to quests only and thats just #########.

Even with all its flaws, one thing I loved about the old system is I could play on my own terms without having to worry about logging in every single day like it's a job, now it just feels like it's going to be like every other game with this daily/weekly bullshit, a business model that repeatedly burns people out of other games.

I only ever did dailies as a fun, minor BP boost. Tying Rift progress to them to progress it or miss out is just going to make me say screw it, they want me to play every day? It's just not going to happen, I'd rather play a different game.

DBD rift was one of game passes that respected the player's time but now 100 rifts fragments to get 1 tier, 3 quests gives you 45 fragments which is under half of a level. So thats 10x's as many needed fragments, with 1.5x's the rewards, all the while removing any new lores that the tome brought? Thats some bull right there.

"Quality of Life" update my ass. They want to remove the old tomes entirely in favor for this!?

This new system is awful, they made a lot of changes that make the game feel like a cheap mobile version, not even DbD's own mobile version felt this bad.

Genuinely the only good things about this update seem to be Orela herself.

It seems at later levels the Rift Fragments Rewards are bigger? so how do you know that we are being snubbed for Rift Fragments? Also we now get Rift Fragments on dailies which is way more than we can get on a single day via xp.

Seems to me, infact the game is geared towards playing way less than normally, since you can gain an entire nights XP in Rift Fragments from 1 day of dailies.

I am not saying you are wrong to be skeptical of BHVR, but I'm seeing some errors in your math here already, so thats a problem.

If you calculate everything you will get exactly to level 101 (and a bit on top). Why would they add an infinite tier if you don't get fragments for playing?

@vol4r I think we still do, because when I checked my level and compared it with the amount I got through quests it didn't add up

You are right. Seems like we get passive 5 rift fragments per game.

It's still downgrade because we were getting 1 rift lvl through 8-9 games and now we get 1 lvl for 20 games.

Behaviour seems determined to sabotage their own game.

I love DBD. I purchased it on PS4 when it first came out but I was always playing some other game and never got around to actually popping the disc in and playing it until the PS5 version was released in late 2020. From that point, I was hooked. I have all the DLC, I've clocked in at least 4k hours, it's the game I primarily stream, I've never missed an event and have always completed each rift pass.

And it's been the rift pass and the events that have been my major motivator to keep playing, because they had always been an achievable goal. At 70 tiers, the Rift was perfect. At 85 tiers, it was a little more of a time commitment, but it was manageable. At 100 tiers, it might just be time to start saying goodbye to DBD.

Fact of the matter is that I'm just a little over a year away from turning 50. I've got a full-time job, a non-gamer girlfriend who needs attention, and…well, other interests besides DBD. Although I enjoy the occasional online multiplayer game, I'm primarily a single-player gamer. I like my narrative-driven games that I can pick up, play through from start to finish (along with getting the platinum) and then move onto the next game.

DBD was great because I could pick it up during an event, or at the start of a new Tome tier, and complete my objectives before heading back to whatever epic single-player game I was going to work on next (or that I put on pause to play DBD.) I never felt stressed because I knew I could take periodic breaks away from DBD to play other games or focus on non-gaming aspects of my life and I would still complete the Rift before it ended.

I don't feel that way anymore. Now there are 100 tiers, each of which require 100 fragments (up from the very manageable 10) and you can't even get fragments from leveling up? That goal of completing each Rift now feels unachievable because it feels like we have to constantly play non-stop now if we want to finish the Rift. I already have a full-time, I don't need another one. And when a game starts feeling like a job; when your goal stops becoming achievable, it might just be time to walk away.

Behaviour needs to understand there is such a thing as "Too much of a good thing." Making us devote so much time to a single game will cause burn-out and push us away from continuing to play that game. I love DBD, I don't want to be pushed into getting sick of playing it. :(

You still earn fragments with XP. The rate seems to be 5 fragments per 500 xp. I'd like to see the XP amount reduced 200 or 250 though.

The new quest system awards a lot more rift fragments than before (about 83.5 rift levels worth compared to 50-55 worth under the old system), but I think the passive relative rate should remain the same as previous or be slightly faster.

2x a week for 2 hours at a time is more than enough to finish it. Lets assume you manage 6 full matches every session; you'll play 144 matches (a low ball baseline, you can probably manage closer to 192 matches and 8 per session than 144 matches) . If you finish every milestone quest and every weekly you will get 83.5 tiers. If you average at least 500 xp per match (not hard all you have to do is be in the match at least 8 minutes and 20 seconds) than you will get 5 fragments per match passively. That's another 7.2 tiers, bringing you up to approximately 90.5 tiers total complete. You will get at least 24 first match of the day XP bonuses bringing you up to 91 tiers. You would play on 24 individual days allowing 24 sets of 3 dailies which provides enough shards for 10 tiers bringing you up to 100 tiers, completing the rift.

Even if you don't do a couple of the milestones there is going to be quests associated with the anniversary event and with 2v8. As of right now we don't know exactly how many rift fragments we'll be getting for these quests however in the past major event tomes like the anniversary and blood moon typically awarded 20-25 tiers worth of rift fragments while minor event tomes such as chaos shuffle and 2v8 have awarded around 10-15 tiers worth of rift fragments. Given quests actually award more tiers worth of rift fragments than the tome challenges of the past we can assume the events will at the very least award the same amount. Thus if you earn those you can actually miss almost all of the milestones and still make it to 100.

you don't need the game to give you a challenge to play a different character or use different perks, you can do that anytime you want

Coming back to this, what really sucks is not having the random “knockout remix” challenges in the quest system where we would get randomized perks (basically a mini Chaos shuffle modifier). If we can’t have that, we should at least be given the option to toggle a random load out that would do exactly that. I do recall somewhere that they will bring back glyphs to the quest system? Not 100% sure on that, but that’s exciting, and hopefully, they do end up doing it.

So far, I'm feeling like these changes have dumbed everything down and made the game even more repetitive than it already was. The new changes have not improved anything for me that I can tell so far and the challenges are mostly "do all the normal stuff you're supposed to do."

I just got drawn back to the game for 2v8 and was appalled to find the new system. The UI is such a downgrade over how pretty and intuitive it was before, I'm still confused by it now, and the increased requirements to progress is a net negative even if you didn't care about the appearance or feel or the Archives. And I'm really sad to lose the old tomes themselves! Both to go back and read the entries, and because I already miss my pustula plant from tome 5 I'd bring everywhere to confuse people.

The change feels more lazy than anything else. Not a fan.
