Since it's not the Jorougumo
Since we're not getting the Jorougumo (big sad), what do you guys think the killer will be? We know it's asian folklore but this category is so broad they could've as well told us "yeah, it's gonna kill people". That said it still opens up possibilities for speculation. My ideas:
Thailand
Manananggal
Basically a thai vampire capable of splitting itself in half. Don't know how this could work in dbd but bhvr could probably find a way. Honestly I would much rather it was something from japanese or chinese culture, but this would be ok too, I guess.
Krasue (Penanggal)
Similar but different, the Krasue's head splits from it's body, dragging all internal organs with it. Visually interesting but unlikely as I feel it would be too similar to post-rework Merchant.
China
Jiangshi
Chinese take on the vampire trope. Moves by hopping. Personally wouldn't want it.
Bashe
A giant snake, supposedly big enough to eat elephants. Could be interesting if given the right visual design. Not very popular so unlikely.
Daji
A historical figure, consort of king Zhou, often portrayed as a malevolent fox spirit in legends. Said to be a torture enthusiast. In Japanese folklore, this spirit is the same as Tamamo no Mae. A hot fox-woman would sell a lot of skins.
Baigujing
A shapeshifting man-eating skeletal demoness, slain by Sun Wukong. Sometimes translated to english as Lady White Bone. Bone themed killer would be pretty cool.
Japan
Kuchisake-onna
A more modern legend, Kuchisake-onna is said to be a slit-mouthed woman who ambushes people on the street with a pair of scissors. Don't know what her power would be, but a killer with a big pair of scissors for a weapon could be visually interesting (think the size of Trager from Outlast or maybe Gwen from LoL).
Tengu
Wise spirits living in the mountains, often portrayed possesing a mix of human and crow characteristics. Considering the Entity's connection to crows, this could be an interesting addition. On the other hand, the crow theme is already filled by the Artist.
Gashadokuro
Giant skeleton. We don't have a giant killer yet so it's not an impossibility.
Hashihime
A woman turned into an evil spirit by jealousy. Tied to bridges. Not very popular so unlikely.
Amanojaku
A demon that eats people and has a very contradictory nature. Not very popular so unlikely.
Kitsune/Kyuubi ← Most likely in my opinion
Fox spirit. Again, could sell a lot of skins if portrayed as a female with fox characteristics.
Nukekubi
Similar to the Krasue, just without the flying entrails.
Onibaba
A mix between Oni and an old hag. Would be funny.
Sesshou-seki
The rock into which the spirit of Tamamo no Mae was sealed. A literal stationaty rock. Would like to see them pull this one off.
Shirime
A humanoid creature with an eye instead of an #########. Funi.
Tsuchinoko
A fat, short snake. Silly.
Yuki-onna
Malevolent spirit, manifesting as a female around snowy mountains. Snow/frost themed killer could be interesting.
Hone-onna
A woman who becomes a skeleton after death and sseduces the man she loved in this form. Bone based killer would be cool.

That could be pointing at the Krasue imo. Seems like a likely candidate.

I’m hoping the Kuchisake-onna. If I’m remembering correct that is the spirit that asks “am I pretty”. I don’t know where I heard it so I’m probably mistaking. But if it’s more recent then that could be a candidate due to it having less impact if done incorrect. (I don’t know how recent but if it isn’t tied to deeply into folklore then people might not be as mad if it’s done incorrectly.)
but it’s most likely a kitsune or a different popular spirit. The devs probably won’t choose something not well known outside the east cause they still want Western sales. But if they pull this off well I would love to see other Folklore added. The Wendigo (the human one not the deer) would be Awsome. Living in the upper Midwest (Northern Minnesota/Wisconsin area) you hear lots of old stories. a Skin walker would be Awsome , Hell I would love to see Bigfoot.
I don’t know many stories from other countries but this could be a fun idea for the devs to show off different cultures.0 -
That would be lame af. A floating head with entrails hanging behind it? How dumb is that lol? There is no way that BHVR would actually think people would want to play as or against something so unbelievably lame.

I know that it is more of an urban legend and I'd have no clue how'd it would work in game but it would be amazing if this chapter turned out to be the Teke Teke. The Teke Teke is basically a women who is spilt in half (no legs) and crawls around with a scythe recreating her grievous injury on individuals.

Could they get away with something like this? Apparently the depiction of a jorogumo differs, and honestly this pic kind of reminds me of the MCU's Spider-Man in the Iron Spider suit lol I'm not arachnophobic though so not sure how it would be perceived

Snakey killer sounds fun

It was said that there no plans in the future for something with spider legs to be added in the near future. They didn't say that it was because arachnophobia. Just also mentioned that accesibility options for certain phobias are feedback they would listen to.
That's why speculation is back on ground zero for the asian folklore killer, the arcade machine on the upcoming map is probably a coincidence.
@topic
Honestly, it's hard to speculate. Very gory can mean a lot of things. Are the killer's action gory or the characters action? E.g. a Gumiho itself wouldn't look quite gory, but their desire for human flesh could. On the other stuff like the slith mouth woman or Manananggal are definitively gory, by design itself. I'm really curios what they are going for to be honest. But without clues it's hard to predict.0 -
I'm personally not too invested in picking out specific entities because there's so many, and when BHVR have done stuff like this in the past their interpretation has always been on the looser side. Oni and Spirit take very clear inspirations but they're still a bit different than their typical archetypes.
My personal guess is that it'll be inspired by Chinese folklore though. That's what BHVR were probably originally planning to make with Doctor, until the playerbase voted for the unexpected direction that lead to Doctor. The only other option that was on that poll I know of is Heibai Wuchang, which could be cool for another try at the idea of controlling two Killers. I wonder if anyone else knows the other folklore options that were suggested back then?

A kappa would be funny for the memes.
I don't actually care what it is as long as we're not getting a third Japanese ghost.

I doubt wed get a third ghost besides the grudge

there was a community vote for a Killer?!?!

In China, yes. They wanted to make a Chinese killer, so they threw it to the Chinese playerbase to vote for inspiration. What they voted for was a real and alive person who is trying to "cure" gaming addiction through shock therapy. I think the story goes that before the release, the devs shifted gears and turned him into the Doc we have now. Léry's originally had Chinese text on all its signs too.
