Would you take smokebomb over a medkit?
As you might know, survivors are receiving a new item in the 9.1.0 PTB which is a smokebomb similar to the fog crystals that were present during the halloween event. I am excited to see how this new item can be used, but I also see a future where — just like other items — survivors will still end up using a medkit once the novelty wears off, simply due to the sheer usefulness of having a self heal on hand and the smokebomb will remain a filler bloodweb item.
Do you think people will regularly take the smokebomb into the trial, or will this item fade into obscurity?

I will use them as long as you can use more than one in a match.
5 -
It has infinite uses.
The only thing stopping it is a cooldown between uses.
Which may be an issue.
2 -
How does it work with charges?
Then I will definitely take it. I‘m the type of player who uses all types of lose the killer perks.

Essentially, the Fog Vial has a single, rechargeable use, rather than a set number of charges per match. Once used, it will go on cooldown, and then can be used again once that cooldown has passed.

Could be wrong, but probably not.
It isn't going to be better than being able to heal yourself or do gens faster. It isn't gonna draw the beamer addicts away from flashlights.
It's better than Keys and Maps, I guess, even after the changes. It seems like it's designed for stealth players, but every other update for the last two years has been killing off that playstyle.

I would just because its something to shake things up, add Lucky Break and Iron Will and you could have a lot of fun with it imo. I would probably bring Strength in Shadows to heal if really desperate, its a nice perk I used to run quite often too even if it isn't always worth having it

I think the survivor role has become quite dull and monotonous so the Vial will probably get decent use just because it's something different. Likewise, keys and maps will see more use too. Alot of people don't like change though and will stick with what they're comfortable with, so I dont think the Vial will ever beat medkits, toolboxes, and flashlights in the long term but i do think we will finally see more variety.

Yup... I'd use that over a medkit, lol

I never bring in items so I'll give this one a shot.

basically talking, medkits are the best for solo queue survivors always, but when we enter on swf territory, fog vial is coming hot and ready to mingle
0 -
- I'm 100% sure it won't be "strong", I've understood the developers' mentality by now and they would NEVER give a strong item to survivors. The history of the game teaches us this by now: flashlight, toolboxes (yes toolboxes were even stronger), flashbangs... everything has been nerfed over time, so they would NEVER give a great item to survivors. Medkits will ALWAYS be the best choice

Right now the best thing you can do is take a medkit with a syringe. Pop it and start working a gen for 24 seconds of efficiency. Pretty much nothing can get you that level of efficiency consistently in terms of items. Sure maybe this thing might sometimes get you out of a bind, but its not "every" time that it can work.
Generally perks and items and such are about consistently getting that value, some things might be able to get more value but if it is rare or hard to get that value it usually isn't worth taking over say, pain resonance, which is pretty simple, consistent value.

Personally, yes. I don't use medkits, I play injured all the time. Gens are life. (Medkits are literally life, but yeah....) I'll give the smoke bomb thing a try. If I like it, Yay! If not, back to toolboxes.
Edit: Nevermind. I just read the comment from the dev that said it's not an opaque fog, but just more of a haze. Hard pass. I'll stick with my toolbox, thank you.

If they're good, they'll probably become the only item I bring to a trial on the regular (outside of Chaos Shuffle or my Locker Dweet build, when I'll be bringing a Med-Kit instead).
I'm not a big item user and much prefer to bring perks for getting stuff done, which is why I'm such an advocate for the Botany + Self Care combo. But this item looks like it will be a lot of fun and might tempt me back to playing more Survivor games. It will be funny to do a disappearing act on the Killer by dropping a fog bomb and sprint bursting away from my gen.
It does sound like they will be quite a bit weaker than the void crystals, though. Those weren't terribly effective either, so I'm a little bit worried they'll be kinda useless in practice. I think it might have more functionality in common with a Distortion token than the void crystals, and be mainly used as a way to hide your aura on activation.

I dont use Items in general, but I would say No. Healing yourself is strong. Doing Gens faster is strong. Flashlights are fun to use. So I dont see the Smokebombs being that popular. They will probably be more used than Keys or Maps, but
a) this does not mean anything since you almost never see a Key or a Map and
b) this might not even be true, depending on how much people like the changes to Keys or Maps.
And personally, I did not really find the Smoke Crystals in the Halloween Event really exciting, they were rather boring to be honest. Also I am against more Clutter in the Survivor-Bloodweb and that certainly sounds like more clutter.0 -
I'm SURE they're going to nerf it because a lot of killers are going to cry about it (and Franklin's Demise will probably become a constant perk because of this); so no, I prefer to keep carrying my medkit and leave it on the edge of the map to use later xD

No, because I am addicted to hoarding my items
0 -
Past the (semi)novelty effect, nobody will use this item ever again.
3 -
This content has been removed.
-
if it has an aura suppression effect I'll 100% shill for them.
I'll still use them regardless, as I loves them last time they were around.
2 -
Of course, for the same reason I would take Flashbang or a Winter Party Starter.
It fun. c:
It wasn't that strong in Haunted. It wasn't that strong in 2v8. It's been confirmed to be toned down and so won't be as strong here. Genuinely fine and if it gets Survivors to bring anything else besides toolboxes all the time, I'm for it.0 -
Yes if it’s cool, I’ll absolutely put down my medkit for a Smokebomb. Rah rah like a dungeon dragon. I wonder what the addons will be.
Me with my smokebomb SoonTM:
2 -
no because the game is in the 99% figured out stage of its lifecycle and there is almost 0 room for fun unless you're matched up with a particularly bad player, and the potential value you get from a smoke bomb (edit (made much later): unless it's overtuned) is nothing compared to the near-guaranteed macro value you can get out of a medkit

That's well and good.
Not everyone plays DBD with competitiveness in mind.1 -
How are bad players fun? The worst games are when you're up against new or bad players. I hate matchmaking fails like that.
0 -
They should have Franklin’s Demise auto trigger the smoke bomb once it hits the ground as a minor risk to running it.
3 -
No idea yet. Need to see them in action before I can say.
1 -
you're missing the point. the point is unless the smoke vial has like a 40-60 second cooldown (so you can use it every chase) and/or it consistently really trips up even the good killer players playing the best killers (in which case cue the (probably warranted) complaining and inevitable nerfs) it's not going to be worth running over other options if you care about actually having a decent chance at winning.
it's not that facing bad killers is fun, it's that not getting any value whatsoever out of an item you brought (especially when you could've brought another item that would've actually been beneficial) isn't fun. and smoke vial is one of those things that's, by design, going to be insanely powerful or completely useless. we'll see what it ends up being.
sure but dying or indirectly causing your teammates to die because you didn't choose the optimal thing (which has been heavily encouraged ever since 6.1.0, especially in solo queue) still sucks even if you want to be mr optimist^tm. like please try to tell me with a straight face that you prefer losing over winning.
1 -
Friend, I'm casual enough to not care about how often I win or lose on either side. Nobody's bringing stuff like party starters and the fog vials to play optimally. The fun of those rounds is to see what you get away with, not win. It's no different than bringing a flashlight instead.
2 -
then unless you're an absolute god at chases & macro or you're playing in a 4 stack of like-minded people you are actively & significantly lowering your team's chance to win before the match even begins. if we had an MMR system worth a damn that wouldn't be such a bad thing, but unfortunately we don't, and unfortunately the state of solo survivor is miserable unless you're stoned or a streamer that has chat to talk to.
that's just how it is. i wish they'd actually do something about the current state of killer & map balance so running goofy ######### wasn't so damning compared to meta ######### but instead they're sitting on their hands doing soft handed changes to low tier killers 9 years in so w/e.
2 -
off the top of my head:
Sandbag Olympics
The blendettes that got helped get distortion nerfed because they were hiding and not doing gens memeing.
flashbang locker buildsStevegull
The amount of people that won’t touch gens and stand around just waiting on saves
All the bards
Last minute switching characters just to match the rest of the group theme in lobby.
plot twist0 -
We'll wait for the first set of nerfs because it's going to probably be complained about to death by every killer who encounters it.
1 -
Survivors will always choose medkits and toolboxes over this anyway which is why we need to bring those in line with the rest of the items
-1 -
I can alredy see it as a counter to aura perks like barbeque. Someone getting hooked while ur on a gen? Pop smoke and keep going, they wont read your aura across the map
2 -
They'll sit in my inventory ignored completely in the sameway flashlights, maps & keys always have (until an annoying challenge comes along requring them)
& i'll curse the bloodweb being filled with even more pointless junk I don't want on survivor taking away yet another spot from something I might actually use!
Still some people seem excited by them & I'm not against that, though I suspect i'll get many lost games because "teammates" tried to get value from one like they do flashlights.
2 -
I had the impression that auras are only blocked when the killer is within the mist. It being a sort of portable Distortion would be interesting.
4 -
Why should medkits and toolboxes be made to be as useless as the other items? When I play survivor I don’t bring medkits because they’re super powerful. I bring them because I have them laying around, they do have some utility, and everything else is completely useless to me. Nerfing medkits or toolboxes won’t have me bring other items - it’ll have me bringing nothing because why would I bother?
0 -
Never stated it has infinite uses. Might be add on reliant, be like two charges on the item. Wait and see, people are panicking and calling end of the world every time something bigger is changing. We got a lot of qol as killers as well as some improvements to make the game more fun. So now let them do something for survivors too.
3 -
100% smoke, already have super fast heal, but smoke give huge chanse to escape, its almost like DH in bottle

There is a response, 2 comments under mine, from BHVR.
It said this: "It has a single rechargeable use on a cooldown."
1 -
Ok, haven't seen that. I assume that it will be void crystal on about 90-120s cooldown.
0 -
I'd rather see a variant of toolbox that you can use to create new pallets. This would be great on the maps the Devs have forgotten about. Mentioning no names (Haddonfield).. But anything new for survivors should be fun.
4 -
It'll go the same way as maps and keys, nobody will use it not because it's not useful but because medkits and toolboxes are ridiculously overtuned.
3 -
Close they just made it a perk lol
3 -
Now that were seeing stats... definitely wanna give the new item a try. Healing one or 2 times is nice...not having to heal in the first place because I lost the killer is better.
1 -
Cough cough the over abundance of aura reading perks and addons while also killing distortion cough cough
Sorry I had something in my throat
3 -
I had a ton of fun having survivors die on pallets, smoke bomb them then pick them up with WGLF+MFT by making the killer think i was going for a pallet save
the ayruns of dbd will appreciate it
3 -
smart
2 -
TBH assuming it goes through to live as-is (it won't) everyone will appreciate it. Seems strong enough to justify running it even in solo queue.

Did you misread the part where I said I'm not a player who cares that hard about wins and losses? I don't play in 4 stacks that aren't of similar mind to me. I play with a casual SWF, with friends who bring stuff like Bardic Inspo and Pebble for fun. I'm not a comp Survivor Main, I just want a fun perk or item. To me, this item is fun, therefore it's worth bringing. I wouldn't bring this into SoloQ, because I rarely play SoloQ. And if comp players don't want it, well… medkits and toolboxes are still right there. Bring those. Nobody took them from you, they just added a new thing for casual Survivors to use. That's a good change, because we haven't gotten a new Survivor item in ages.
You are very free to disagree.Exactly. Now we can add this to the list. :)
I don't think medkits are overtuned, I do think syringes could use a look again. I DO think some toolboxes could stand to be brought in line, mostly Commodious and its variants. There's enough perks, you shouldn't be able to do a quarter of a gen faster any more than you should be able to remove an entire quarter of gen progress.
