Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

I see that there's a banner for 'Lady Jezabell ZZZZ Tops Tryks' coming up

Why bring Tryks back? I’ve generally been on the side of DBD being a horror game - no Hereditary or I Saw the Devil, sure, but maybe along the lines of May the Devil Take You. Glimpses of a very dark narrative underbelly and a lot of camp and gore. And I’m generally accepting of tonal variations within the presentation of the characters. From Clown to Plague to Trickster to Ghoul, the varying animation and sound design still felt rooted in the real horror of the characters’ storylines even if they could be clipped and meme’d into oblivion. That’s the nature of games.

But Tryks in execution feels like the unbelievably cringe creation of a 12 year old writing in an ‘Ultra Kewl Super Badass’ but also ‘So LolzRandom!!!’ OC who was Jigsaw’s SECRETER secret apprentice and thought that all the other apprentices were like soooo lame. There is no texture to her at all.

Her voice direction and lines sound like a bad Harley Quinn knock-off that makes no sense. Her look is simply a carbon copy of Sable’s generic ‘token conventionally hot blonde’ from countless bland games, with similar vaguely alt style and some extra jewelry. To the extent that I at first thought this was supposed to be Sable as a killer, given they both also have the same type of personality - Edgier than Thou, with Sable calling herself ‘not like other girls’ and thinking watching some hardcore horror films means you're in touch with the dark side of the world and Tryks performing an overwrought ‘LolzSoRandom!!!’ persona and fawning over the Entity. (Like, again, a terrible Harley Quinn knock-off that doesn’t understand anything about the character of Harley Quinn.)

When I looked them up in confusion and realized it was a relatively long-standing character, I was astonished and disappointed by the complete lack of personality, presence or depth in eventual presentation. No body horror or unexpected standards of shape or design to Tryks' own look (surprising for a reality-bending architect/artist who supposedly idolizes eldritch grotesqueries), nothing intriguing to the lines, no clues to lore connections. That old Lunar New Year event with the lanterns - implicitly from an outside power - that could be preserved and protected or destroyed and corrupted literally had more depth and intrigue to its lore! Which, FINE. Since the last of the old writing team was replaced I think a lot of people have gotten used to low-key ignoring the lore.

But if you must bring the self-insert of a 14 year old that is desperately acting out for attention back, PLEASE MAKE IT SO WE DON’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE SHRILL, CRINGEY, EYEROLL-INDUCING VOICELINES EVERY TIME SOMEONE SO MUCH AS BLINKS IN GAME.

ETA: and to clarify, I don't have a problem with the Entity having connections or pseudo-connections to characters. I thought the cult in both Elodie and Haddie's stories had a lot of potential narratively, and didn't necessarily undercut the cosmic horror. But they didn't undercut it because humans desperately grasping for the favor of incomprehensible entities because they see no other way out and submit in the vain hope that they can be subservient enough to survive is an old classic. It works so long as the narrative doesn't try to use the cultists to actually pierce the veil of grotesque ineffability lying between us and vast, alien consciousness.

Humans can fumble in the dark in feeble petty self-serving tasks until the end of time, bargaining with the unbargainable, without making cosmic entities more comprehensible. But saying 'well actuallyyyy the Entity IS bootleg Joker and has a Harley Quinn from wish.com' is bizarre.

ETA2: TRYKS FEELS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF 'HELSING ABRIDGED' BUT UNIRONIC
