How to de-incentivize tunneling
Firstly, there is nothing that BHVR can do to remove tunneling from the game. People are going to tunnel. If tunneling is a problem for you run off the record and decisive strike. Its why the perks were created. However, that does not mean that we cannot make tunneling less apparent. I have a few changes I would propose to reduce the need for tunneling in DBD.
So, why does tunneling exist? Tunneling exists for different reasons. Some people like to do it to be toxic. Some do it cause its "what's done in comp" other killers including myself do it when we need to regain pressure in a match due to gen speed perks. Often the games I find myself having to tunnel is when survivors bring perks that can out pressure me. This typically includes things like brand new part, built to last, and streetwise. When survivors blow through 3 gens in less than 3 minutes we have a problem. I can no longer manage 4 people, which means that I need to bring this down to 3. And even if the original propose changes to unique hooks were put through, I would still have to tunnel in this position. Which kind of negates the purpose of the changes because I can deal with a 25% buff with 3 people. First, we would have to consider nerfing toolboxes and gen speed perks. This would stop tunneling for pressure related reasons.
The second issue is that the changes punish killers for hook juggling and killing. What needs to happen is not a punish but a reward that outweighs tunneling. One thing I have been considering is the use of unique hooking for the first 4 survivors. So essentially, we get a base kit reward when we hook each survivor before they go to second stage. We would make changes that basically reward killers for going after a new survivor at the start of the match. I would implement these by having a base kit aura effect that shows a survivor who hasn't been hooked yet and a movement speed perk that allows the killer to easily get there. If the killer successfully does this they get a buff of some kind. Maybe a 5% movement speed boost when leaving the hook area for the rest of the game (for 15 seconds or something thats worth it), or a gen penalty or basekit forever entertwined. Something that basically makes them save time for the rest of the match. This would stop early tunneling for comp reasons. You could then build in at if someone dies before 6 hooks survivors get a reward like faster gen speeds.
These are the changes that would almost need to happen to actually stop tunneling from being a common practice.

pretty much what i been saying for ages. tunneling is often a result of gen speeds. not always, some will tunnel with the intent to be toxic but many killers are tunneling because gens fly too fast when survivors actually work them.
then on the flip side, gens need to be done faster because the killer kills faster. The fact is as long as the devs keep increasing the speed of play, fast gens, fast killers (blight and ghoul) and fast kills will be a thing. its a simple race, kills v gens, who can get them done faster.
The problem is gens are so tedious and boring that people dont want to spend a long time on gens so nerfing toolboxes and gen speed perks will result in people saying gens take too long which some already think gens take too long so they avoid doing them entirely which i see all too often in my solo matches.
while i agree that killers should be rewarded for spreading hooks, the movement buff to help killers get to the survivor that hasnt been hooked yet would help low tier killers but it would also buff high tier killers with already high mobility like ghoul and blight. if these high tier high mobility killers are exempt from these buffs then sure. just have to be careful the system doesnt blanket buff/nerf all killers.
Can test then if the gen speed to kill speed ratio works out but that can be a complicated one to test out because swf teams often work on gens as a team and can be way more efficient at knocking out gens compared to solo based teams where people are not coordinated or have people that refuse to touch gens, so testing the speed of gens to kills ratio isnt easy to balance.

In rebuttal to the "jUsT pLay Anti-TUnnEl pErks" argument— But what if the survivor wants to run different perks? There should be more options outside of 2-3 perks to play, without one of them slapping the obsession on themselves. This playstyle/strategy encourages future survivors to play selfishly — stealth, hiding, etc. and forcing the veterans (if there are any still around…) to carry — which is not always fun.
I like your suggestions and I do agree that there is absolutely nothing BHVR can do to get rid of tunneling, but they can also take away bloodpoints for killers that do double hook and extra points for hooking a new survivor in between. It is de-moralizing to experience only 3 minutes of gameplay with only a few thousand of points to show for it when the killer has way more points — thus being rewarded for this sweaty gameplay style. This rule could be taken away if its down to 2-1 gens.

To be fair the game itself encourages solo players to play selfishly in many ways.
1.no coms for solo makes the match feel like the team mates are bots. theres no real human element so people are less likely to play altruistically for random people.
2. the hatch where only 1 player can escape. they even have hatch offerings which are hidden from all other survivors.
3. the games description on steam states you can play as a team OR selfishly.
Even removing BP i dont think that would make any difference at all. Tombstone myers gets pretty bad BP score due to lack of hooks and chases but people still play that killer knowing they wont get much BP. people that have multiple p100's genuinely dont care if they get 40 BP or 40,000 BP. Many people have said post match "enjoy you BP" because myers doesnt get much…. my answer is always the same. "p100, thousands of add ons, dont need BP"

survivors do have a free win button…. its called hatch lmao. take an offering and your set. dont even need to do gens or open the gate. if your worried the killer might find the hatch first….take a key so you dont even need to be the first to find the hatch.

bit extreme, thats like saying the killer should get auto kills as soon as the match starts lol. not really sure how you jumped to such an extreme there as no one has said killer should get that. fact remains survivors do have an easy way out that bypasses the main objective of gens and gate….called hatch. i know it exists, i been using it all night.

you can bring an offering to spawn the hatch by the shack so you know exactly where it will spawn…. you can bring a key to open it after killer has closed it. come on, dont give lousy excuses like that. like i said i been using it all night with minimal issues and hardly no effort at all.

Now hatch spawns are a secret offering. Main building is the best solution if u want a free win

yep works for me, out of about 25 matches tonight about 15 have been hatch escapes while others have been a mix of gate escapes and sacrificed. you should try it. easy win

Question to yall. What is in your opinion the balance result of the match? BHVR stated 2 out, 2 dead. If in high and top mmr the killer can always receive 4ks how would that work for lower mmrs that are way more casual. If killer can't get a kill in top mmr what's the point of mmr from killer pov?

you have that choice… thats my point. if you choose to help your team mates and risk yourself in the process thats your choice. if you choose to play for yourself, you have that choice

im not talking about 3man out, if you want to play as a team and get everyone out you best play swf with coms. solo play is best played exactly that solo. result is my team might lose but I escape and win. just not had a match v freddy that struggled to get a single hook all match, 1 guy was downed at the end…am i going to risk myself to save him? hell no. result of the match was 1k 3 escape. he was not a happy bunny lol

let me guess he looped the killer all match while you stayed safe and then refused to even try to save him. Crap like that happens to me often. SoloQ is all I play, selfish teammates like you ruin the game worse than any tunneling killer could.

like it or not selfish play is encouraged. while solo remains to lack the coms that swf have, solo play requires a different playstyle to win.

i play dbd for my fun and i have fun. like i said, want to play as a team and all be on the same page…swf on coms is probably best. besides my point was survivors do have a free escape button… hatch….just to bring it back to the point at hand.

just because it’s allowed doesn’t make it right. I hope we never meet again in the fog. No man left behind thunder gun!

i agree but it is what it is. untill soloq get what swf gets, i find the best way to win in soloq for me in play selfishly. give me a way to work with the team like swf can and sure i will be a team player but until then im solo player and will play accordingly.

no it isn’t. The best way to play the game is to not make the game miserable for your team. There is more to this game than winning, wish more people understood that.

we each have out own way of playing the game. if you want to play as a team just play swf. i play solo and have people treat me the same as i treat them, leave me on hook and just escape. doesnt ruin my fun. people should start taking ownership of their own fun and stop relying on others to provide it for them.
- killer ruins my fun by slugging and tunneling
- survivor ruins my fun by not doing gens
- survivor ruins my fun because they escaped early for adept
- survivor ruined my fun because they wanted to meme instead of win
- survivor ruined my fun because they wanted to win instead of meme
- survivor ruined my fun because they wouldnt save me
- survivor ruined my fun by tbagging
- killer ruined my fun by humping the ground
At some point you need to stop blaming others for your lack of fun, not everyone wants what you want and not everyone will play how you want them to. thats why swf is probably best for people that want like minded team players. but dont expect random solo players to play how you want them to in order to make your games fun, just not going to happen

im toxic because i play to win and have fun doing so? i dont hump on the ground or tbag at the gates. quite the opposite really, i kill asap and dont delay. when gates are open i dont sit and tbag like most do, i escape asap without delay.
just played a match, i brought expo so people could get themselves up when the killer slugs… what did my team mates do? they didnt even bother to press the heal button and expected me to come along and heal them when killer was chasing another survivor. then they complain that i didnt help them up and i stayed on a gen (me being the only one doing gens). this is exactly why i play the way i do, i cant rely on random people to play how i think they should play. im supposed to think "is my team mate having fun?" seriously? result is once again they 3k and i escape.
