FNAF was the biggest opportunity for Growth and BHVR fumbled it
In my opinion here is what went wrong:
- The year started strong with the promised QOL initiative however as we all know BHVR fumbled this and had to follow up with a health update for the health update. This is probably because they didn't actually allow themself any extra time for the extra work. Tokyo Ghoul was "delayed" by 3 weeks however i put this in quotation marks because they released the Orela PTB ONE WEEK after the release of tokyo ghoul. So they actually only allowed themself 1 extra week total, but orela PTB still came with many bugs anyway.
- Then came FNAF and in terms of quantity it did not live up to expectations. We practically got a chapter with a killer and half a map (re-used outdoors, pre-existing realm, no map offering).
- FNAF was also a reminder of the neglected new player experience. In fact it was made worse by the broken go next prevention system, punishing players for getting tunnelled/camped, something that should have been addressed before FNAF
- Bugs like messed up audio after interacting with camera, the game was certainly not improving on this front despite being in a QOL initiative.
- TWD released and is probably one the worst quality chapters released. 2 of the most requested licenses back to back underdelivered.

FNaF was an overall success and this happens with every single update with player count going up and down. This is a normal thing for every single video game out there it's not just DBD.

They need to get rid of their habit of making everything a crunch time and review the workflow of each department they have
This game is about anything rarher than playing PvP. Players with different intentions in match, perks as crutch, playing against “anti” or broken power rather than player itself, unclear stats, unclear RGN, unclear matchmaking, zero competency when PvP genre suppose this so called competency. This game is casual despite being overloaded with generic systems and stuff, which creates ridiculous tribalism. Playing as survivor is straightforward boring at all and hard on solo Q, if not meaningless
And all of this was created by them at first

That's besides the point. I did not say fnaf was not a success, i think it was. However, as i say in the title, it was the single biggest opportunity for growth the game had and BHVR fumbled it. It was the most requested license and they seriously underdelivered in terms of quantity. The map should have had it's own realm. There should have been a survivor, maybe even two. The game should have been made more new player friendly in time.
However in terms of quality, Springtrap is great in my opinion. They chose quality over quantity however with other licenses they did both so why didn't they do the same for FNAF? Maybe its because of TWD but that ended up being slop anyway.
There is an infamous clip of DAWKO getting punished by the go next prevention for getting tunnelled. That could have been avoided but the devs were too careless and with TWD they're having the pay the price.
But the fact of the matter is they will probably never get an opportunity as big as fnaf again. Especially if they dont learn from this past year.5 -
Every big chapter release has had a big dropoff in player count in the few months afterwards. This has happened for the entire history of the game.

There really should have been drastic QoL before FNaF. You can't get a whole wave of new people to play and then expect them to stay when the experience is bad. It would have been a great opportunity for retention.
I also expected a lot more from that FNaF chapter. I was kinda shocked there weren't at least cosplay cosmetics for original survivors. I expected Fazbear's Pizza and security uniforms and what did we get? A t-shirt. I don't care about this franchise one bit and even I was disappointed after all the hype and expectations.

The avg players is still higher after FNAF. I'm not sure what kind of growth you are expecting.

It was undoubtedly a financial success, but i believe OP is referring to the fact that they haven't seemed to have retained the majority of the players it brought in

I agree that they missed a chance.
If FNAF was released after all the QOL things were already in game, more people would stay.
Until now, the QOL Initiative has produced mid results at best. The game is still bug-ridden, cheats are running rampant, majority of the QOL features that would improve the game are swept off the table because this community can only whine.

Honorable mention that all those people left AND we still lost yellow items.

Yeah i feel the expectations were way too high. The people who like games like DBD are mostly already playing it. IP will bring on some people, but a majority were never gonna stay.

It's September. All the kids that bought the FNAF chapter went back to school.

now that they are gone can we plz have yellow back?

For real though. Ever since we lost yellow it's had a Domino Effect and BHVR has had one bad hit after another. Just goes to show you don't mess with yellow or you get cursed with bad juju.

I forgot about that lmao
