I thought this was intentional because matchmaking keeps stats separated by which killer is played?

It means temporarily switching during the queue so you can level Bloodwebs, change cosmetics etc. of other Killers while you queue for one specific Killer.
Once you start to matchmake, you're locked into playing that specific Killer but you're still able to put Bloodpoints into someone else, browse the store etc. while you wait.
