Could this game survive without anymore IP's?
Since the beginning DBD has been known for their licenses of iconic characters from movies, games, ect and they have brought in alot of attention from those fanbases. Starting in 2023 it feels like they have gone into overdrive with licenses, in the span of a few months we got DND Tomb Raider and Castlevania and that trend has continuted to this day. I get why they do this as signing these deals bring in more players and that brings in more money, but is that really sustainable? In recent times a good majority of the original chapters were not that well received with Doomed Course bringing in a buggy killer, Sinister Grace starting with overbuffing the killer and then nerfing that said killer until she is barely seen anymore. The licensed content is going to keep coming as most likely the chapter after this upcoming All Kill part 2 chapter is most likely going to be licensed and since its ten years of DBD it has to be big or else all hype will die off which brings me to my next point can original chapters bring in enough hype to the game compared to the big licenses anymore? At what point will the profits come to crawl with the og chapters and the license fees become too much for BHVR? Thats my big worry is that the all the IP's being added is going to came back to bite BHVR and and the chance to experiment with og content will be a thing of the past.

I believe it could if they just keep adding to the ones they alredy have

Yeah if they keep adding to the ones they already have, especially Resident Evil or other big ones, they'll be fine.

For example resident evil still has tons of survivors/killers to add.
Silent Hill could use a graphic rework and adding characters from SH 1/4/downpour/f/any other upcoming games etc.
Five nights at Freddy's still has various animatronics to pull into the game with their own unique personalities.
Myers and Pinhead may get re added in the future, possibly with better deals like movie Myers/Laurie instead of comics, and maybe getting Clive Barker's good side to add stuff like the other cenobites / survivor legendaries etc.
Saw has possibilities for either a new killer or legendaries for the pig / tapp
Alien has potential for new skins as they havent used a single one of the original varients besides the queen. I mean like Runner/Praetorian/Warrior/Predalien etc as the base skin is the Drone. Along with legendaries of survivors across all movies/games.
Castlevania.. they made half the characters into cosplays that they could also make into legendaries + many more missing characters and skins for dracula based on the many games hes been in like a Gabriel Belmont skin.
Almost every license still has potential stuff to be added that currently wont be as the focus is on getting more ips until they cant even spend time to give 1 of them new stuff.
Left 4 dead could have a zombie event to earn all the other survivors from l4d 1 and 2 as legendaries etc
Even dungeons n dragons has lots of stuff to add
Ever ip they add makes the rest more likely to be neglected.

All of this please love these ideas <3

if they make strong (power wise) scary (visual)killers and not not nerf them they probably could

Im still waiting for Frank Stone (the champion) to join the fog together with Linda Castle

"Since the beginning of DbD" … yeah cause with the base game and even the first two DLCs there was no licence, but sure. The game doesnt need licences, it needs enjoyable content. Always was and always will be like this.

The very first paid DLC was Halloween.

so what?

Survive, absolutely. Thrive? Probably not.

You said, quote
cause with the base game and even the first two DLCs there was no licence, but sure
which is flatly wrong. Many people would argue that Halloween, the very first paid dlc and also the very first license the game ever pulled, skyrocketed DbD's popularity.
"enjoyable content" alone doesn't mean squat if you can't attract an audience to begin with.

It's a bit of a balance really. licensed chapters are going to be better at bringing new players to the game in a way that original chapters won't.
Doesn't matter how good or interesting an original chapter is, it won't pull in any new players, because if someone hasn't played dbd, then a new killer/survivor they've never heard of won't make them start. Original chapter will only get more money from the current playerbase IF they're good. And lets be honest the recent original chapters are pretty bad. I barely see any krasues or houndmasters being played.
Tbh it's kind of the same with repeat licenced chapters. So in a way dbd needs to keep adding new IPs to attract new players. Only issue is (and i haven't seen stats so can't say this for sure) I'd imagine dbd has a new player retention problem. The game is immensley punishing for new players, and not many people are willing to put up with that.
Dbd really need to work on improving the player experience as opposed to just slapping more and more new content in tohe game.

Ironically im actually enjoying playing and prestiging krasue now that she is rare lol. Ive nicknamed her "Fishy" because the floating head feels like your a flying fish chasing people lol

might not be the most popular character but:
If Frank Stone has a million fans, then I am one of them
If Frank Stone has ten fans, then I am one of them
If Frank Stone has only one fan then that is me.2 -
It could survive indefinitely as long as they keep it online. Surviving is not the same as thriving though. Without a steady flow of new IPs (multiple parts of the same IP counts here), the player count drops. Too much of that and everyone loses interest.

Fine, Halloween was the second DLC. Still, the player gain didnt came with right with the DLC, it came roughly a month later AND fainted as fast as it came and even went further down than before. So claiming that this licence skyrocketed DBDs popularity isnt truely right. Funnily the highest gain (early dbd) was probably around Spirit release. And then during Corona and RE release.

It does make a killer more fun when people don't see it often. They often struggle with the counterplay and tend to be a bit kess toxic since it's a novelty lol

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that particular spike. Though as far as I can tell it's inconclusive whether that was the chapter's doing, since that pattern doesn't repeat with other original releases. I am noticing that there's a huge spike coinciding with the release of the End Game Collapse.
That said, I'd still argue that the momentum gained from Halloween was pivotal to DbD's success overall. If they hadn't landed Halloween when they did, would they have landed Bubba, or Freddy? Would they have landed Silent Hill, and from there, Resident Evil, and Stranger Things?
You mention RE yourself. RE's release coincided with a free weekend, doubling the amount of players, and causing a record-high playercount on steam. Would that have happened if they only dropped original chapters? I strongly doubt it.
For the record, I don't disagree that the game needs to be enjoyable as well. But I do think that the game wouldn't have lasted nearly as long if it only did original chapters.

I'm curious about what you mean by a "graphic rework" for Silent Hill. Do you mean redesigning the skins to make them look more accurate?

Yes. Like cheryl(heather) and cybil, to look more like the games. Some also tend to want james to be redone either to look like the remake or just closer to the games. Lisa seems to be the one everyone is satisfied with and maria was the latest character lol bit facially also doesnt look like either game.
