Question about the forums
So is there any purpose to the vote up/down on this forum or is it just a stress relief button when you see something you don't like?

If an opening post gets enough down votes it will no longer bump, even with replies. Otherwise, it's a vibe check.

i didn't realize that, huh. I always thought a brave yet controversial witty zinger could resuscitate a discussion.

For me it is simply a tool to express if I agree or disagree with a post without commenting "yeah, I think the same" or "nah, I don't think so.", when I don't really have an argument for the matter at hand.

They are only good for egoist people and others dont care tbh.

I see, interesting

I wrote a browser extension that just hides them because its completely meaningless, people don't actually use upvotes and downvotes the way they are supposed to. Its supposed to be a "this content is actually bad (i.e. someone trolling or being toxic)" to downvote, but people just use it to anonymously downvote things "i disagree with" without having an actual discussion which just breeds more toxicity.

Yeah the downvote number is fairly small too. I don't know if it's ratio based but I've seen posts with as few as 5 downvotes no longer bump.

Its because they misspelled "echo chamber" as F-o-r-u-m-s

Juicy juicy data! (I am currently ratioed.)
3 -
I mean, fair enough, but Im not sure if it's accurate data when voting behaviour seems rather impulsive at times.

I dislike the effect it has on forum culture and think it should go, but it feels like a lost battle already.

Ditto

Yeah just leave it as upvotes only

Im not sure how many people visit the forums regularly. But posts ive made or comments ive made usualy only end up with 1 up or downvote from the op of a discussion or the topic I chose for mine. Have probably never seen more than 10 down or up votes so i don't see how theyd be usefull for data when there's barely any of the community clicking the buttons.
Even the polls section usualy gets like 1-8 people maximum to participate depending on the topic, and then it gets burried and abandoned.
Considering its a game played by thousands, its odd how few people interact here.

"Considering its a game played by thousands, its odd how few people interact here"
It used to be a lot busier back in the day. It's died off over the last year or so.

A lot more than thousands actually. There is something like 750k trials played per day.

Nah get rid of them both, they are meaningless, god awful posts just get upvoted because of bias and nothing else and good posts get mass downvoted because of the same. It doesnt work as a system when there's a one sided bias on the forum.
If people want to weigh in they can comment.

Well the next step would be millions but im not sure if we have more than 2 or 3 million players yet.

I try to engage in good faith. I don't downvote people that disagree with me, I downvote people that have an attitude problem or are failing to be constructive whatsoever. It's not a dislike button. Sadly, I suspect I'm the minority with that. I agree that the general usage seems to be just downvoting perspectives that don't align with one's own, especially with lurker downvotes.
However, it does its job from time to time, such as burying the regular "I just lost a game so I'm going to the forums to claim the Devs specifically hate ME and MY character" posts.
The thing is, despite all this, I don't feel the forums are an echo chamber. Every other thread has some… Spirited… Discussion, and the downvotes never consistently fall on a particular 'side.' Despite being a small collection of people, the bubble here isn't too bad.Post edited by zonkednb at5 -
Gate keeping 101.

Before I go any deeper, I can understand the frustration with the system. It can feel petty or reactionary, for sure. There is a silent group of lurkers here, though, and it does gain us extra insight from their participation.

People fail to realize this. They think the forum is somehow biased against them (which is nonesense) but it's more tone and attitude that get downvotes more than anything else.

its funny because this post/this question alone gets many downvotes… but what could those even mean? It’s a valid question that doesnt really get answered elsewhere, and obviously people use the downvote for other reasons than to disagree - not sure how you can determine on other posts if that user disagrees with the post/comment, or with some part of it or just doesnt like the user that posted it, or just trolling..

I suspect they have that amount, if not substantially more. They said recently they have 70 million players, but I think this has to be accounts and not active players. I guess it depends on how regular the players need to be to count.
Like right now there are 55k players on Steam. that's not counting consoles, or switch, or the other PC providers. And those numbers are just right now, whatever the count is in a few hours could be a whole group of new players, and of course not every player plays every day.

I really dislike the way the down vote button works. BHVR can keep it for the "data" for all I care, but it shouldn't be coded to no longer bump up topics that share unpopular or controversial opinions once they've been ratioed. All this feature does is stifle debate, which is not ideal for what is supposed to be a discussion forum. I've even been down voted for sharing my P100 Legion achievement because that's genuinely all it takes to get down voted around here. If you go into bat for an unpopular Killer you are guaranteed to get down votes.
Not that any of this matters because the forums are a ghost town, anyway. I don't know what insights BHVR can really gather from the same 30 or so regular visitors. Most of the player base seem to prefer reddit where the moderation is a lot more relaxed, even though the down votes straight up hide posts over there (which is also a terrible thing).

lol downvoted for the truth sadly. Bias people dont want discussion, they want to push their narratives.

Upvotes and Downvotes could be goated if you could see who upvoted and downvoted. Also helps with credibility 😉

It's a ghost town because everyone is banned. A good chunk of the posters I've see around lately are new, and many of the remaining regulars are on their last strikes and are being cautious with what they say.

You are either good detective or had some personal experience with this, but i agree.
