The graphics update has me worried it will leave some PC and PS4/Xbox users behind
Like my title says, I am very worried about this upcoming graphics update. Not all of us can afford to upgrade our PCs, or a PS5/XboxS so what will happen to us? Can we get some reassurance from BHVR that this is being taken into account?

They probably will cut service for older consoles users
10 -
Yeah it'll probably only be Xbox series X/S and PS5 from now on
5 -
Yeah and I may Quit DBD if they discontinue The Switch. Im not gonna put my time in another console just to keep playing. I spent 3 Years Getting my Unknown up To P100 and im not gonna spend 3 more years getting him back up there.
Also I highly doubt that they will. Because it might result in losing a great chunk in there player base.
But it will result in huge Delays in Updates on multiple platforms
6 -
That's not a source of worriness, that's long overdue.
-2 -
Yea, there is no 'may quit' for me. if my PC can no longer run the game, quitting won't be my choice.
9 -
While yes I agree its dumb if they lose a quarter of their player base because of a graphics update. You know there's data transfer right?
5 -
Data transfer? What does that have to do with anything? Yo mean switch platforms? Yea, if it came to buying a PS5 or upgrading my computer, I'd upgrade my computer. Neither is an option for me financially with the way prices have skyrocketed.
3 -
Ah my bad for misunderstanding. Just checked the PS5 prices and you were right they are pretty isnane, especially since if you can even sell your PS4 it only goes for 80-100 dollars which is really unfortunate.
2 -
That's a Good Thought. Im just not a fan of Being forced to buy a new Console just to play the Game either. If they do a Switch 2 upgrade I'll save up for a Switch 2 and get it on there. But if they just Completely end the Switch version im not gonna buy a whole console I don't like just to play the game.
But the new graphics could work with the consoles well just have to wait and see
1 -
You don't lose your account/progress. You just need to cross progress on your new platform. Many people use more than one platform with the same account.
6 -
Not everyone has the game on more than one platform nor the financial states to get another platform. That's the entire point of this thread, which you seem to have missed.
-2 -
You can just use cross progression. You don't have to wait 3 years. lol
6 -
You seemed to have missed that @cogsturning replied to a specific reply which mentioned to do the same grind again. Pointing out cross progression here is important.
Even tho your general thread is correct, if BHVR does such a graphics update, they also need to do better optimization, because currently the game already runs worse than it should do with the current graphics and if they upgrade the graphics, it might just get even worse.
9 -
this is unfortunate for OP if it comes to pass but unfortunately older electronics do gradually hit the end of their lifespans and lose software support
dbd is a live service game, it shifts and do the system requirements
1 -
That still assumes one has access to other platforms to cross-progress onto.

I agree that tech upgrades are inevitable. DBD looks quite dire visually in its current state and a graphical overhaul is the best way to keep games going and get new users. Look at what Conan exiles did with its Enhanced update (updated from UE4 to UE5 and the difference is stunning. The update also brought in massive influx of new players making it reach its second highest concurrent player peak since leaving Beta eight years ago.)
But if I was Behaviour, I would consider keeping old version afloat and allow them to have old version lobbies. At the very least player matches, keeping it fully peer-to-peer, which wouldn't require any more investment from behaviour when everything is run at the client machines, be they PC or console. I think this would be fair. Unfortunately, I have really low expectations of Behaviour.-1 -
This person is specifically saying they don't want to p100 again, which is a different thing entirely. I'm not assuming anything. If you're talking about doing this then you would logically be talking about another platform and not understanding that cross progression exists/how it works.
1 -
If they do this, it's a stupid move that shows just how little they care.
They will lose a giant chunk of their players, and no amount of Sable skins is going to change that. Hardly anyone will upgrade their console for DbD out of all games.
4 -
Exactly. Its just not worth it
1 -
Guys, it sucks to have to upgrade your PCs or consoles just to keep playing the game, but it’s a necessary step for it to last another 10+ years. The reality is the game is getting outdated and needs improvements… that’s just how it is.
-1 -
Ok, but don't expect those people to continue supporting the game.
That is just how it is, too.
4 -
You can have stunning looking games that can still run or be adjusted for lower end pcs / hardware.
Helldivers has so much more going on but I'm able to still run it at low setting, with current dbd optimization afraid anyone without a good pc or next gen just wont be able to run it at all.
Outlast trails is another one that looks good, but can still run on lower end pcs.
Elden ring is another game that works for me on lowest settings, and still looks good and gives option to go higher settings, while also maintaining low setting options.
DBD is not the sorta game that needs to be gate kept behind high end hardware.7 -
I mean, that’s completely fine, but they can’t keep holding the game back just because some people don’t want to upgrade their 10 year old systems. It’s either that or don’t play, I suppose.
0 -
We don't know how it's going to turn out yet, but if upgrades are necessary, then so be it.So many people play this game on potatoes, tbh. Sooner or later, these people are going to need to upgrade to a better PC or console.
-5 -
But they need to come with optimization or not at all. Other companies are able to optimize their games, Especially a older game from 2016 who have tons of people playing on lower end hardware they need to consider that.
6 -
Some people are still playing on PCs or consoles that are over 10 years old, and they’ll have to upgrade eventually. You can’t expect BHVR to keep supporting those systems forever. I saw some people complaining on Reddit because they might not be able to play on their PCs that are already struggling with lower settings. Like, it sucks when you have to upgrade just to play, but sometimes it’s just necessary.
-4 -
Oh yeah "some of you may die but it's a sacrifice I am willing to make", I guess. I'm happy for you that you have good hardware, but not everyone has enough money to upgrade their system, especially considering current RAM prices and what not. Of course the game won't be supported forever, but it's not new story-driven AAA game and it should be expected to run smoothly even on 10+ year old hardware and it's true for literally all of the most popular games - Fortnite, LoL, Apex, CS, R6, GTA V Online etc. all run great on very old hardware and I'm sorry, but saying "well, sucks to be you" to a large portion of your playerbase is not the way to go.

Don't forget that lots of content purchased on Switch is completely locked to that platform.
If / when BHVR pull the plug on Switch my Cheryl, Pyramidhead, Mikaela, Ace, Hag, Clown, Doctor and Adam all die with it since I don't have those characters unlocked on my PC account. I'm not too bothered about losing some of those because I never actually play as them (I'd like to keep the Silent Hill and Hour of the Witch chapters). But for the people who have played on Switch since day one and nowhere else, they will lose everything but the perks they've unlocked when they move over to another platform.
I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be starting again elsewhere if it meant having to buy all that content again. I didn't get a refund of any kind from BHVR for buying the same stuff across two accounts prior to cross progression, so there's no reason to think Switch players would be able to keep all their stuff or that BHVR would offer some kind of refund.
I think there will probably be a Switch 2 version and many of the current Switch players will eventually migrate to that platform, but that's besides the point. It's Switch or nothing for a lot of the most dedicated players that are trapped on the Nintendo systems.
3 -
Hmm.. that is certainly a tough one. I think I understand and agree with both positions here. On one hand, updating it all in such an intense way may cut off players whose systems simply can’t keep up. And that is unfortunate, some could even say a bit unfair to spend even more money to keep playing. On the other, the game is definitely in need of such updates as because it is 10 years old it certainly looks and runs like it. And if they were to instead do a DBD 2 as stated in the live stream, would mean that players would still have to spend more money to keep playing as you’d have to repurchase everything and grind it all a 2nd time.
I think the bare minimum must be better optimization and a huge bug fix overhaul, regardless of the game gets this graphical update or not. I do know there are other games that keep older systems in mind and people can still play them with the graphics turned way way down. Perhaps there’s a middle ground there?

They'll do literally anything except improve the survivor gameplay experience. No anti-tunnel. No anti-slug. No new mechanics. No new items. No new objectives. No new map props. But have new voice lines. And an oilier Kate.
-3 -
Talking about switch, I recently downloaded my switch version of dbd that have crossprogression with my steam account, whitch is the one that I play, and I got surprised that everthing on nintendo switch was unlocked, I have never bought any dlc on nitendo switch, maybe BHVR managed to convice Nintendo to let them transfer the dlcs within the plataforms.
If you have another device you should definetly test it because I have never bought one dlc for switch.
0 -
All my PC stuff is unlocked and present when I play on my Switch, but the stuff I bought on Switch isn't unlocked on PC. Sadly, it's a one way street like that.
That's why I always buy all my content and auric cells on PC, since it's the only way that I can access it on both platforms (except for the cells. Those can't be shared with Switch but the things that I buy with them on PC can be).
2 -
That seems backwards to me. You'd think Nintendo wouldn't want you to get the DLCs for free, but it's that they don't want you to have them leave their platform? Yeah, that seems backwards.
2 -
Ohhh… sorry to hear that, for one second I thought they managed to make switch not the worst device to play dbd lol.
3 -
I should clarify, I think it's to do with the DLC you bought in the Nintendo eshop Vs the stuff you bought in the in game shop. You can buy stuff with your cells on Switch and that can be shared with the other platforms (at least I think so). But if you bought it in the eshop then it can't be shared. Unfortunately, I bought chapters from the eshop because buying a whole chapter worked out cheaper and you also got a freebie like a charm or a cosmetic. I imagine most Switch players did as well and Nintendo probably realise this.
I mean, looking on the bright side you do get more free characters on Switch at least (everything up to Kate and Clown is unlocked). And it's easy to spot Trapper's traps in the grass… because there is no grass.
1 -
Valid concerns but may we please have one thread where this isn't where we go with this?
4 -
Imagine asking people to buy hardware in this economy. Absolute insanity.
2 -
I’m going to have to disagree with the idea that it should be expected to run well on hardware that’s over 10 years old. If they can optimize it enough to run on some lower-end systems with lower settings, that’s great, but I don’t think it should be an expectation. If they want the game to last another 10+ years, changes will need to be made, and players will have to upgrade sooner or later. That’s just how it goes for many games. DBD has been showing its age in both gameplay and visuals for years, and it’s time for some improvements.
-3 -
It’s not insanity at all; that’s just how it is when your hardware is really outdated. Like I mentioned in another post, people are complaining about the new graphics update even though they’re already playing on hardware that lags on lower settings. The game needs this update if it’s going to last another decade. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to point out that these players need to upgrade, and if that’s not possible, I genuinely feel bad for them. But the truth is, this update is necessary for the game’s longevity. It’s just far too outdated at this point.
-2 -
I imagine the graphics will be scalable to an extent, low will probably look how it does now I imagine.
on the plus side it's not until late next year, so there is a lot of time to save for new hardware and (hopefully) the prices come down before then, but that's just me being optimistic.
I mainly would love it to be playable on my steam deck still, I'm sure it will be.1 -
Improve is necessary, and who cant evole togheter, simple stop to play. There's no way to support a 2010 PC or old consoles if you want to evolve the game and attract new players; you either evolve or you get left behind.
Even Sony ow Microsoft, they release ps4 or xbox one games today? no. Everything needs to improve and every people should be know that.-5 -
People wants to play a 2026 game using a Pentium K62 from 1999. It sad, but, upgrade are necessary. noone can be frezze in the time.
-5 -
Isnt it that you can share your account on more devices through bhvr account? Im not sure but I think its possible.
Tbh it would pretty mean to throw like 1/2 or 1/3 of player base because of graphic update on 10 years old game.
1 -
That setup wouldn't even run the game when it came out, so that is very disingenuous.
2 -
It does suck (especially in the current hardware economy, thanks AI), but I am not sure what people expect here. If DBD were to go on for 15 -20 years, do you expect them to keep it in a playable state for hardware that was already aging when it launched? That's just not reasonable.
At some point in the near future some people are going to have to upgrade or move on; not every game can be Ultima Online lol3 -
I continue to be amazed by the logic of people who refuse to upgrade their gaming hardware once every ten years because it’s “too expensive” but have no problem spending hundreds or more every year on optional cosmetics.
-2 -
Why should I have to upgrade my hardware when other games that should be way more intensive run better then DBD.
IMO if you can run the game at least 60 fps currently (pc users at least) you should still be able to play with the option of lower graphics settings in the future with around the same frames as you had before. I get 120 on low and worried these updates will tank my FPS.
Now for people who are currently playing on 20 fps and complaing are not the majority of complaints. Most people just want proper optimization and advanced graphical options so lower end users can better optimize the game for their rig. current in game graphic settings are so basic.0 -
it was just an intentional exaggeration to say people want to run current games on the old configurations they own. It's disngenuous want to prevent the company from modernizing and evolving to the present day because someone doesn't have something. The world is dynamic and everything needs to evolve. I'm going to ask Rockstar to dowgrade the GTA 6 quality because my PC certainly won't run it. Do you see how absurd that is? The game can't remain stuck in the past.
-4 -
You need to keep in mind that the PS5 came out in Nov 2020. That was almost 6 years ago. How long would you expect a game to support a legacy console? We are probably only a couple of years out from a PS6 announcement.

Mentioning GTA 6 is moving the goalposts. We are not talking about GTA6 here, as that would be DBD 2 equivalent. IF you want to use the GTA franchise as an example, then you need to look at GTA V. When they made the upgraded Enhanced Edition finally on PC, they kept the old version as a Legacy game for those who were not able to upgrade. The same thing could easily be done here, just make the new graphics optional.
