First year down, 1200 hours... Thoughts

Gonna make this quick.

TLDR: This game is hostile to new players. Slugging and Tunneling are in desperate need of being addressed, in addition to the "Hatch" mechanic and end trial interactions.

  1. I'm down to my last two killers to get to P3 for meta builds, all survivors are done. This has taken a year to accomplish with the pathetic drip drip drip of BP that's been given out. It's demoralizing and I still can't believe I kept up the tenacity to accomplish it.
  2. New players are brought in by their friends. I'm not sure how the MMR works for groups, but it needs to assume the lowest MMR for matching. I've heard, experienced, and watched videos/streams of a lot of new players being brought in by veteran friends being thrown right into the pits of hell due to skipping over the lower tiers of the MMR system. Those new players, by my observations and what others have said, frequently uninstall.
  3. Perk bloat, DBD suffers from a similar issue that TCG/CCGs do at the end of a cycle. Just far too many perks creating some combinations that in a perfect situation equate to an "I Win" button. Both killer and survivor perks have this issue.
  4. The hatch, this is one of the roots of toxic play. Like almost every problem in the game can be funneled to this. Last two matches take 3-4 times as much time to finish as the first part of the trial, encouraging griefing and extremely toxic play by both survivors and killers.
  5. Both killers and survivors need an additional win condition. Badly. It's obvious that the game play loop only works for so long until it doesn't. And right now with the proliferation of slugging, especially during the event, without another way to "win" the game.
  6. Both slugging and tunnelling are significant problems in the game and need to be addressed. This is both for killers and survivors.
  • For survivors, those actions are the most toxic, boring, and brain dead methods of play; waiting minutes on end staring at a computer screen or being blitzed out of a trial in 2 minutes. There is no fun or engaging game play when it ends before it begins, or worse, you stare at a screen waiting for the killer player to actually play the game.
  • For killers, it rewards the easiest and least skilled actions the game has to offer, removing the need to improve or experiment with perk combinations, creating a stale and repeat meta and game play loop that has no variety or true strategy. It's robotic game play that could be replaced by a bot, and doesn't encourage or reward creativity or exciting interactions within the game. I've found from my experience, that playing killer actively discourages you from thinking deeper about the game and outside of the box, and rewards the most brain dead methods of game play.

There's a handful of "in the weeds" things that would help if they were addressed as well, but those are individual perk/power issues that are already in discussion by the community.

BHVR never keeps new players because of thier god awful tutorial, they will make one for the Black Banquet but not update the tutorial for the regular game. All new survivor players are thrown to the wolves and BHVR dont care because of the skins they will buy before quitting.

10 years and BHVR had still not made a proper tutorial of what expect or the ideal way to play. Even a short vid of how to play as this killer or how to play against this killer would help and they won't even do that.

Garbage Map Design, Garbage Tutorial, Garbage MMR. All it will take is one game (Not made by Gun Media or Illfonic) one major game to compete to give BHVR a kick in the ass and say they are not as good as they think.

My personal opinion is that killers need a "per killer" MMR in addition to that. Each killer is unique enough that it takes some practice to get used to their individual powers, etc.

It's why so many killers tend to get stuck on a "main" or only really play 3-4 killers and only dabble with the others. Once your killer MMR is at a certain level, there's no real opportunity to learn at all.

Survivors don't really need that, since each survivor is essentially identical with a tiny amount of variance. It's really just "what skin do you want to run or what do you want to look like in game".

BHVR should hire MrTatorHead from youtube. The guy makes in-depth looping tutorials, and if new players checked out atleast one of these videos, they would get a much better understanding of the game.

If you're trying to learn a brand new killer power, the bots in custom game really aren't a bad alternative.

I've been seeing survivors so new they don't know how or why to mend. It's sad that mending isn't in the tutorial as it is such a common condition.

Same, watched a couple of people fall over in the dying state this weekend for no real reason other than they didn't stop to heal quick….

This reminds me of that clip of Dojacat closing the game after losing the tutorial match. No perks or player interactions yet to soil the mood, so yeah... I think the tutorials could use some work.

Game was always hard on new players because you can't teach experience. Only time everyone was on "equal" terms was at the start of beta.

    1. Drip drip of BP? A lot of my criticism is going to be based on, you don't even know how good you have it, old man talk. But the fact you got 40+ killers to P3 in 1000 hours is insane coming from it took nearly 3x as long with less killers for most of us vets. Even modern day I can get 1 killer and 1, 2, or even 3 survivors to P9 well before the next chapter hits, and I don't play anywhere as much as I did years ago.

1b) The grind is the reason many people even continue to play this game. Those like me who played for years are trapped in a cost-sunk fallacy and newer players need a goal to reach or they become bored and leave.

    2) MMR doesn't work because making it work causes players to realize they aren't top tier kill or survivor. They get frustrated claiming every match is sweat. The reason new players SWFing with vets going into the pits of hell is due to smurfing issues. A low MMR survivor host the lobby and vets join them getting baby killers. It was such a big issue bhvr had to rework it so that match making would use the highest MMR player for match making.

    3) perk bloat is an issue because every character needs 3 perks, apparently. The devs digged a hole and keep throwing dirt out. As for the equip perk and win, no. While perks make some aspect of the game easier it is down to the skill of the player. You can be a ######### player with meta perk and still get your ass handed to you.

    4) old man telling you you don't know how good you have it. The hatch is necessary or there will be no endgame. Any solution you can think of, I will tell you now, has been proposed and shot down.

    5) argued at nauseam, not going into it.

    6) yet 10 years later the game is still kicking. Not much you can do without taking actual controll away from the player.

Overall, congrates on 1000+ hours. Hope the tutorial phase treated you well.
